Taking his 6-8pm lecture was a blessing last quarter! He truly makes teaching fun and he is very, very funny! There is NO HOMEWORK is this class, however, there will be 2 main books that the class discussion and essays will consist of. The essays MAY seem overwhelming, however, it is a VERY approachable person via office hours and PRIMARILY via email. You will be surprised how fast he will respond to your email. it REALLY, REALLY helps to email him your drafts!!!!!! I can't stress this enough. If you want a good grade in this class, just do well on the essays and engage with reading discussions. The midterms are worth less than the essays, so don't start on them late! His lectures are straightforward, and I ASSURE YOU that if you ask him questions or if you're confused, he will clarify what you ask him.

Nebel is a great teacher. This class met at night for 2 hours of solid lecturing but grant was able to make history after 1865 sound interesting. I would recommend taking this class.

Grant is a GREAT teacher. I was very happy going into this class because the work load is minimal, you don't have to buy super expensive textbooks, and I actually learned something worth while. The break down of this class is 2 essays (which you can rewrite if you do poorly), a midterm, and a final. We had two books to read and a few articles, but it was really mellow. Just put a lot of detail into your essays, keep on top of the reading, and take your notes with a labtop because he talks fast. Good luck!

Teaching style: he talks fast, so bring some laptop to type whatever he says down. Sometimes he will yell out test question, and that's a point to make note of. He does have a tendency to pace around the front of the class a lot, make random jokes and curse, but it is somewhat entertaining. He does talk about stuff off his powerpoint, which he does put on PolyLearn, but what he says will have more detail than that. Sometimes he does go out of order, though. Workload: it's light, but it means that you have to focus more on your midterm, final, and the two essays. Just have a good thesis, argument, a lot of detail, quotes, and organization. Discussion: it happens in class and during office hours, and he does say that it can boost your GPA if you participate in it a lot. But in order for that to happen, he has to know your name by heart by the end of the quarter. And any questions during lecture, about the readings, etc all count towards it. Office Hours: sometimes it's a party in there with a group of people and we all talk about random things before getting back on subject. Sometimes, depending on when you go, you can have one-on-one time with the teacher. Essays: you get an initial grade, and then a chance to rewrite them for a higher grade. But the teacher is somewhat vague about which corrections he wants you to make, like "unclear thesis" or "need more quotes". But if you put in a lot of detail, you'll do fine. Midterm and Final: Both alike, 1/3 is matching the date of events in order and describing certain key terms, 2/3 is two essays which need to (most importantly) have organization and an argument. Also important is detail. This is when all the times he yells "test question" comes in handy. Overall: Great teacher. Watch Out For: Grant's Rules of History

Intelligent guy, good professor. Classes are usually interesting. Participation is easy and optional and counts as extra credit. Only 4 assignments (2 essays, 1 midterm, 1 final) , out of which the essays can be redone for full credit, and the midterm topics are known before hand. Highly recommend. Easy A, very easy B.

Nebel is a fantastic professor! The class consists of only two essays, a midterm, and a final and Nebel does his best to minimize outside of class work. The two essays, while at first intimidating, are more than doable and if you're struggling his office hours are very helpful. The midterm consisted of inclass essays which he graded leniently knowing that writting under pressure is much harder than other forms of testing. The final was 100 multiple choice questions and came strait from his lecture slides. Nebel is an extremely interesting lecturer who knows a ton about his subject. He is a very engaging teacher and you will never get bored in his class. I took History 202 for a GE and wasn't expecting to learn a lot, but after taking Nebel I want to continue taking history classes. Overall, this is a great teacher for a great class! Take Nebel

So far it has been 8 weeks into the quarter and we haven't gotten one single thing graded and handed back to us. This guy is a good teacher but he seriously seems like he is on drugs or drinks way too much coffee because he needs to chill out and take a deep breath, AND GET TO GRADING. The weird thing is, he's always so energetic, but it has taken him over 3 weeks to hand back our first essay, which we turned in the 5th week of the quarter. Also, we took a midterm a week after we turned in the essay and I seriously doubt he is going to have time to grade the first essay, the midterm, our second essay, and our final in roughly 21 days when he hasn't been able to grade one thing this entire quarter. It's going into the 8th week here and I have no idea what my grade is because this teacher is high and never wants to grade anything, all he wants to do is discuss stuff. GRADE YOUR GOD DAMN PAPERS!!!!

Never gave us our midterm grades back, which we took over 6 weeks ago. Very unprofessional and extremely unorganized. I'm surprised he got hired at Cal Poly.
