Ross is a cool guy and does everything he can to make Stats interesting. He cracks super stupid, cheesy jokes because he cares about his students and how much fun they're having. Makes the concepts very understandable and familiar. Would take him for any other stats class as well!

Ross is a really good guy, he cares a lot about the material and his students. If you go to his office hours, he'll try his best to answer all of your questions and is attentive to your difficulties. He also tries to be funny in class, usually fails but you can tell he's trying to engage the students. But in regards to this class, it's really really hard. About 75% of my studying was devoted to this class, and I still got a C. The midterms are really hard, and the final is even harder. You have a really long, extensive homework assignment due every week that he grades for accuracy as well as 3 to 4 quizzes a week. I don't know if there is an easier stats class, but I would suggest looking for one before taking this one.

Professor Ross's Stat 130 class was a very straight forward basic stats class. It was my first time taking stats and I got an A, so I would consider him a pretty good professor. The online quizzes he gives are meant to boost your grade and are straight from the reading. If you go into his office hours and have him help you with your homework, you are almost guaranteed an A on homework. I never got an A on the tests, so he clearly curves grades.

Dr. Ross was a true homie. He was very good at teaching material and the activities he gives you are extremely helpful. He grades fair and the workload is also fair. You have a quiz every week, 2 midterms and a final, and labs due twice a week. I thought I was going to hate this class but I ended up really enjoying it. Plus, he tells random jokes that are often so lame they are hilarious.

Excellent professor. I dreaded STATS, having a bad experience in high school, but really enjoyed the way he taught it. Very structured class, and he grades generously. A+

Professor Ross is the man. This guy clearly has a mastery of his subject, yet comes across as very humble and understanding of student difficulties. For Stat 217, you work 2 days a week in the computer lab and 2 days listening to a lecture. The labs can be a bit difficult but they do help a lot by forcing you to work on the material right after you learn it in lecture. As far as grading goes, Dr. Ross gives a decent amount of partial credit on quizzes and exams which is nice of him and also helps keep the class morale high. I never really went to his office hours, so i can't speak on that, however for the times i talked to him after class discussing things i didnt understand he was very kind and explained the material simply. I highly recommend this guy, i can honestly say that im going to miss his class. Keep telling your corny jokes prof

Dr. Ross is awesome. I was really scared to take stats as I am pretty horrible at math, but he was able to present it in a way that made total sense. I was at his office at least once a week to ask questions (usually stupid ones) and he makes it clear that he just wants to help. If you have to take stats, TAKE ROSS!

Kevin Ross is a great professor. Even though the class first seemed kind of difficult due to the very low average (60-70%) on the first mid term and the harsh grading on some of the labs, you definitely do learn a lot. He makes learning stats not so boring. He's also such a like-able teacher that you enjoy his class. He will crack a lot of sarcastic jokes which really do make the students laugh. If you have to take a stats class, I highly recommend taking his.

Ross was a good teacher, The labs could sometimes be brutal and he didn't always grade that easily, but I learned a lot. The quizzes were easy, but exams were somewhat tough and you have to be very careful in how you word things. He graded the class on a curve, which was coo. I would definitely take Ross, but if you want an A you really gotta grind

I didn't take stats in high school, and was nervous about this class, but Professor Ross is very knowledgeable and helpful. He's just a really nice person who cares about how everybody is doing in the class. The labs were difficult sometimes, so ask questions or go to office hours to get the confusing parts explained so you understand and don't lose points on it. And during lectures he'll tell stupid jokes that are hysterically funny. You should really take Professor Ross!!!

Despite my overall grade in the class, I thought professor Ross was a great teacher. He explained things clearly, was helpful when you asked questions, and learned pretty much everyone's names in our class. The homework can be kind of extensive, but definitely partner up with someone you think will be helpful to your grade rather than detrimental.

I had read the poly rating and thought he was a GREAT professor. Sadly this is a misconception. He is fairly young yet his teaching is dry and doesn't really explain anything. First day you are thrown into a lab. Harsh grader. By second week everyone has set lab partners, make sure to pick someone who knows what there doing or your screwed. He makes you print so much! His grading is pretty evenly distributed. To study for midterm just do the practice midterms he puts up and your'll be fine. I would not suggest taking him, he isn't the worst but defiantly think there are better professors out their.

Professor Ross is one of the best professors I've had at Cal Poly so far. He was super inviting to students about asking questions and coming to office hours. I had never taken stats before college and honestly the class wasn't as difficult as I thought it would turn out to be. There are quizzes almost daily but they are short and about the handouts and most of the time on PolyLearn, two midterms and a final, and about 7 homework assignments due for the entire quarter. I would say the only thing I didn't like was using the JMP program for our homework but mainly because I have never seen anything related to statistics before.Professor Ross presented material well and was super organized. I recommend taking his class because he truly wants his students to succeed. Oh he also does a lot at the end of the quarter to help your grade; dropping lowest quiz scores, curving your highest test grade, etc. Super Awesome!

Ross is a really good professor. There is an assignment each day which he calls "quizzes" but it is more of a daily homework assignment. Most of them are through polylearn but there are a few in class ones. He drops the lowest 15% of your scores so it's not a big deal if you miss a few. Ross posts handouts on polylearn that he encourages you to read and print for class. They are an average of 7 pages each and about 25 handouts over the quarter. This is a lot of printing! There are about 7 homework assignments(roughly one per week) that require the computer program JMP. Ross gives lots of instructions on JMP but it can still be slightly confusing. Start the homework early so you can go into office hours if you have questions. The midterms and final are very difficult so fill your cheat sheet with as much info as you can(this will also help you study).

Professor Ross is an awesome professor! He's a young guy and he's so nice, plus he has the cutest little kids...His lectures are clear and he will always stop for any questions, even if they're dumb. Most of all, he really wants everyone to do well in the class and isn't trying to make it hard for you. If you go to office hours, he's really helpful, and you should start your homework early because you'll probably have questions on it and need him to help you - if you email him he responds really quickly and you can always go into office hours, which he extends during testing weeks. He wants all of his students to truly learn the material and also get a good grade, and if you make the effort to understand the material and learn, you'll have a great time in his class. One of the best things about his class is that during lectures he would always include real-life examples of statistics, which was super cool because then you understand the application of all the concepts you're learning. I would recommend him to anyone and pretty much everyone I know who was in his class is trying to get him for STAT 252 next quarter as well because he's the bomb! Take him!

Professor Ross did an amazing job teaching statistics. He tried to make his lectures as entertaining as possible because stats can be very boring. He would tell jokes half way through the class and give life advice. Make sure to ask him for this! It is funny what he comes up with. There is homework due every week which is pretty difficult. The problems are ones he comes up with but for some of the problems it does help going through the textbook. He offers multiple office hours during the week, so make sure to go early when he assigns homework. Everyone usually goes the day before the homework is due and he doesn't get a chance to really help everyone since he has 20 students crammed into his office. I went the day right after he posted the problems and was able to get 1-on-1 help with what I needed. His midterms are reasonable. The average were high Cs on both and most people spent a lot of time preparing. The final seemed very reasonable in my opinion. If you studied what we did the last few weeks of the course, then you would have been fine. He does give quizzes once or twice a week at the end of class but they are usually pretty easy and he drops the 3 lowest quiz scores at the end of the quarter. He also posts handouts online with the practice problems he does in class and the notes for the class. I highly recommend printing these out and bringing them to class. Yes, it is a lot of ink, but it helps a lot when studying for midterms and the final. Take Professor Ross!!! He will help you if you need it. He wants nothing but for you to succeed at statistics.

Professor Ross is an extremely nice teacher who does a really good job covering all of the required material in an easy to understand way. He does not require much reading from the book unless you want to. Mainly he goes of his own worksheets witch are very helpful and the homework that he creates himself. You are able to do both homework and quizes in groups of up to three which is really nice and helps learn things you might otherwise not have gotten.

THIS PROFESSOR IS TERRIBLE. If you don't have a strong understanding of statistics prior to taking this class good luck. You have no hw in this class which may seem like a good thing but it is actually the oppisite because you'll have mini projects that take FOREVER TO DO and to collect data for. The exams are nothing like the practice problems he gives you....which he posts a week before the exam and posts around 5 pages of practice problems so there isn't enough time for practice. When he goes through lecture he hops around all over the notes so you have no idea where he is at. He also skips the steps between problems and just expects you to understand how he got there. Ross does have a very strong understanding of stats, however he is horrible at teaching it to students.

Professor Ross is a really good professor. His 8 AM class was pretty brutal, but he did his best to keep things alive and upbeat. There are two midterms and a final. He gives a bunch of practice problems which really help. No surprises on the exams. No homework and most of the quizzes / "mini projects" you get to do with a partner. He definitely cares about his students and was always great at taking the time to make sure everyone was understanding what he was lecturing.

I got an A- in this class after the curve to clarify. Professor Ross is a great teacher and is really willing to work with students. He always tells students to come to office hours. He seems kind of condescending sometimes but we are all adults here so just ignore it and get your questions answered. There are 2 midterms and 6 "mini projects". The mini projects are not difficult in terms of skill but require you to use jmp (which technically you aren't supposed to use until 252) so definitely start it the second he assigns it so you can go to office hours. The final and midterms are very fair and are formatted the same way as the worksheets he teaches off for every single class. Even though homework wasn't collected you should/NEED to do it. Also he gives you note/cheat sheets for the exams. Would recommend.

Go to office hours!!! When you're not sure if you understand the concept, you need to go to OH or you'll fall really behind. Also, study from the book and do some of the section review problems to hone in on what concepts/ sections you need help in. He cares about your learning, but isn't the most entertaining professor.

Professor Ross is such a nice guy. He wants everyone to do well, and he knows the material can be hard, but if you pay attention he will give you a lot of real life examples that you can actually apply to the real world. I would recommend doing homework early (not the day before like I often did). My only complaint is that I studied really hard for the final and felt like i knew all the material, but parts of the final I did not remember learning at all.. And he actually told us he didn't teach us how to do those parts. Besides that, TAKE ROSS!

Very clear at presenting material, gives practice midterms and finals which help very much to prepare you for the exams. The final was hard and the median for each of the test were very low, tests were too long for the time allowed. Other than that, excellent teacher and is very helpful is office hours.

Its KJR man. Dad jokes. Plaid shirts. He has five kids. What is not to love. He is a great guy stuck with a kind of a crappy class. The textbook is by the STAT department head and I am pretty sure they have to teach with it. I honestly disagree with the Cal Poly intro stats pedagogy. You have to memorize a bunch of formulas and do a bunch of menial work that separates you from how cool statistics can be. At least Dr. Ross really cares about you and tells many bad jokes to get you through it. Also his tests are harder than a catholic priest in a kids gymnastics club. Lastly, he is hilariously bad at drawing normal distributions for being a statistician. love u kjr even if you never read my joke.

KEV!!!!! He is such a funny guy, you'll learn to appreciate his jokes. For stats 301: #1. when you first start you'll be overwhelmed by all the things he wants you to do, there is a heavy workload. Honestly, I ended up with an A- without doing any of the textbook investigations so don't feel like you really need to do the things that aren't HW/projects. #2 GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. Especially for help on homework, he grades those hard! #3 if you're like me and don't like the textbook problems, listen to him when he lectures. He goes over almost everything in class. If you do want a super duper solid A, I recommend doing everything he asks for, which will take up a lot of the time. But he's a really good prof and I think the class is worth your time.

Professor Ross is very friendly and a very personable guy. The class isn't particularly hard by any means, as long as you keep up on your work and make sure you read the nightly handouts online. Ross presents the material very clearly (but it's very easy information to begin with, honestly), and paying attention in class and reviewing the handouts nightly will ensure you get a good grade in the class. Ross is very helpful, and he's a pretty funny guy, often telling a good pun in the middle of class every few days. The only homework are these short, nightly quizzes that shouldn't take more than twenty minutes to complete (and he drops the bottom 15% of them anyway, usually about 6 or so) and the weekly homework due on Fridays that might take a couple hours to complete. My only gripes with the class are that we have to do two group projects in the quarter, but they aren't difficult or even over the top, just a bit long and tedious regarding information gathering, and that the midterms are very difficult to finish in the time period allotted. However, if you take your time to review the material adequately throughout the quarter and read all the handouts and do the practice exams he provides, you will be fine. Overall, Ross wasn't the best teacher I've ever had, but he's a great guy and a good professor who I would take again.

This class is actually really hard and has a lot of work. If you are an Econ major, stay away. If you are a Stats major, I highly recommend it. It is hard and a lot of work, daily homework, but it prepares you for stat 302 and beyond. Kevin Ross is also a good professor that teaches material well. There was also a final project, but it's a stats class, what did I expect.

Dr. Ross is a really good teacher, but the material is just not very easy. I went into his office hours and emailed him with questions a lot which was very helpful, but his tests do not really reflect the material. I got near 100% on all of the homeworks (which are graded for correctness) and all of the quizzes that you have to complete before every class, and somehow never got above a C on any of the midterms or finals. Very nice guy that tells funny jokes though. He clearly cares about his students doing well

I loved having Dr. Ross this quarter! The class is fairly straightforward with quizzes everyday (that are done at home and you get 100% for doing), homework with some coding, two midterms, coding projects and a final. His lecture notes are thorough and easy to follow and he is very helpful in office hours. He does simulations in class which helps students understand what is going on in simulations. Midterms were challenging but he lets you have full page notesheets! I would recommend him to anyone!
