This guy sucked at everything. His lectures were pointless because he didn't go over problems and did not wait for ANYBODY. If you had a question he answered with another question to make you feel stupid. His office hours were always full and it didn't feel like he wanted to help anyone.

I had a very difficult time in this class. Often times, I left class not understanding anything that he had talked about all period, although there were a lot of people in my class who grasped the material much better than I did. Basically, I'm not sure how much of my trouble in this class had to do with my lack of ability in Calculus versus his ability to teach. One complaint that I and many others in my class had though was that he blocked the board when he wrote (he is a large man), so we often couldn't see what he was writing until he moved on to the next part of the lecture. Going to his office hours was helpful, although it was often hard to get much time with him because so many other students were in there at the same time. The setup of the class was daily homework that was collected on Mondays and Thursdays. There were 3 midterms during the quarter and a quiz on each Friday that didn't have a midterm. The class had no curve, although each midterm had an extra credit problem, which was very nice. I also had him during his first quarter teaching, so hopefully he will improve as time goes along.

Erin Pearse is a very nice and funny person, but definitely does not teach in the style that Cal Poly normally does. The class was very theoretical based and it was so difficult to understand what was going on. It's a quick paced course and it doesn't help that he talks fast as well. It also was frustrating that we could never see the board. He's a new teacher so I'm hoping his style improves in quarters to come. He gives a lot of partial credit which is good, but his quizzes sometimes are focused on one topic in the entire chapter which can be frustrating as well.

i knew most of the material for this class because i took calc bc in high school. the last few sections we did in class were very difficult to understand because he teaches with proofs rather than example problems. he gives amazing partial credit though. on one of the quizzes i didn't know what i was doing at all and wrote down stuff that didn't make sense and i still got a c on it. Hopefully his teaching will improve as time goes on

I really enjoyed pearse. This was my 3rd calculus class and fourth calculus teacher (D in calc 3 so i retook). he is good at explaining things. His abilities to draw actually really help for this course since there are a lot of diagrams and vectors. He is fun, and so nice. I had an anxiety attack right before our second midterm. I sat down and started panicking, sweating, crying and i saw him in the hall as i went to get air. I looked at him and could barely talk. He was happy to let me take the test in his office hours as long as nobody talked about calc 4 haha. It really helped and meant a lot to me. This was the best grade i received in the calcs. i dont think it was a hard course and i think pearse really made it clear. I also had a tutor in a math major friend to help clarify some things.

Professor Pearse is a great guy and really loves math. You will learn a lot and enjoy the class. His tests are hard, but he gives a lot of partial credit which is nice. My only complaint is he rushed through a chapter in dead week and put it on the exam. He goes fast, but if you read the night before life will be easy.

Dr. Pearse is a great professor. He goes over examples directly from the book which help with the homework and is really helpful in office hours as well. The work load is perfect for understanding the material. Lectures primarily consisted of going over the examples in the intro to each chapter, so if you study those examples before coming to class, his lectures really help in understanding the material. Overall a great professor and a fair grader, if I was required to take more Math classes, would definitely consider taking him.

Pearse is a decent professor and he is a really good guy. He knows every student by name and wants to see his students succeed. If you aren't clear on a topic don't be afraid to go to office hours, they are extremely helpful. He assigns homework about twice a week but they are pretty short. The only big problem with the course is the tests are extremely difficult. He is a nice grader but some of the questions he asks are so difficult even if the test were open book and note I would still not know how to solve them.

Professor Pearse in one of the most thorough instructors I've had. Any questions from any student he immediately explains as clearly as he can, and if that person still doesn't understand, he goes out of his way to explain it differently. He is always available during his office hours and very helpful to let you take quizzes or exams if you know you will be absent. The material covered in the lecture was well explained from the perspective of how it was related to topics learned in previous calculus classes and the application to the new material. The homework problems in the book are very similar to what was covered in class and the load is excellent for understanding the material. Unfortunately, the exam problems are incredibly difficult (even after learning the material) but he gives a lot of partial credit for demonstrating the concepts. Professor Pearse's enthusiasm and extensive knowledge was an excellent bonus to the class. I highly recommend him as a math instructor and look forward to taking 244 with him as well.

I tried my best in Pearse's class. He is very motivational and nice. Homework is twice a week. Quiz once a week. His exams are not to be taken lightly. I, too, feel like many before me, that his exams were a bit too difficult. I hate to complain, but it's true. And honestly math is never easy. But I assure you, he's a fantastic person, truly cares about your learning, and does his best in explaining. On another note don't ever be afraid to ask questions.

Pearse is probably the best teacher I've ever had for math. He's great at explaining concepts and he gives tons of partial credit. His midterms are fairly easy but his final is incredibly difficult, nothing like his midterms. Quizzes every Friday over what you covered earlier in the week, fairly easy if you know the material. The quizzes are graded very kindly, it's hard to get below a 70 on them. Homework is graded very generously, just do it and you'll get at least an 85 on them. Great professor, want to take again.

Pearse is a one-of-a-kind guy. It's very hard to not like him. He's friendly, cheerful, funny and a great instructor. Take his class. My one piece of advise is study hard. The homeworks and quizzes and generally easy. But the midterms and especially the final are extremely challenging. Know the concepts - including small details in your notes that aren't practiced on the homework - and you'll do fine

He is very personable and helpful in both office hours and class. His work on the board is neat but he moves very fast. Homework due twice a week with weekly quizes and 2 midterms. The tests are quite a bit harder mainly because theres not enough time to finish all of it within the 50 min period. He does offer extra credit on them though because he does not curve.

Dr. Pearse really wants his students to learn the material. Though he moves fast in his lectures, he is extremely helpful in office hours and wants to see you succeed. If you prefer to take a calc class with lots of examples, THIS IS NOT ONE TO TAKE. Pearse focuses on theory more and during his exams requires you to use the definition to figure out problems not seen in either the homework or minimal examples that he presents to the class. Other than that, he is a great, approachable professor.

First of all, Dr. Pearse is just such an amazing, cooky guy. He's this extremely tall man with spiked up hair and a single hoop earring and I believe that gives an indication to his personality. He is so passionate about math and the different applications of it and it's so cool to hear him speak about Calculus because HE MAKES IT INTERESTING. He explains concepts very well but sometimes the understanding of how to apply them wouldn't be there due to insufficient examples. However as the class went on he started to understand this and before exams he would just give us a bunch of examples and have us work through them together in class which really helped. That being said, his exams were still really difficult. You would walk out feeling like you easily just got a 24% but due to his generous partial credit and constructive grading it was more than possible to pass the exams. The final wrecked me a bit but hey it happens. Overall this class was great and Pearses personality and passion for Calculus was very enjoyable.

PEARSE has a DOGGO that you'll see him walking around with all the time, cute puppo. But to the more serious stuff, he presents material very clearly and he is a COMPLETE MASTER at 3-dimensional sketching, which really helps students visualize material. His biweekly homework (due Tue and Fri) are fair, his weekly quizzes (Fri) are VERY fair, and his exams were fair but tougher than the homework and quizzes. He's a great guy, his killer fashion sense is also great and vibrant and exciting, and he does not pressure students if they don't know an answer to a question. There's no surprises in this class, and Pearse is great at what he does. Would highly recommend!!

Dr. Pearse is the coolest dude. Walked in the first day of class with his hair dyed red to match his tie-dye shirt and short shorts. Hands down he is one of the most thorough and helpful teachers I have ever had. Within the first week of class he knew everyones names. He presents the material very clearly and if a student has a question he will make sure to answer it completely before moving on. For 241, it can often be very difficult to visualize the 3-d shapes and concepts but Dr. Pearse is crazy good at drawing like its actually beautiful....and it helps a lot, of course. He assigns homework bi-weekly with starts out light and progresses to be a decent amount of work. Homework is graded very easily and so are the quizes. His tests on the other hand are pretty difficult it usually involves some of the basic homework questions but with a twist. He didnt curve any of our test but offered a decent amount of extra credit questions on the test. These questions saved my grade so make sure you save time for them. I would highly recommend him to anyone!!

not much to say here for linear 1. tests/quizzes were fair, though homework was graded poorly. this has been the only class at cal poly where my homework grades were worse than my test/quiz grades. you get about 60% credit just for doing each question, then one or two other questions are picked to be graded, each for 20%. his graders do it i imagine, but they always pick the toughest problems, so even if you get 10/12 questions correct, you could still end up with 60%. his tests don't always cover everything he taught. you do differential equations early on, but you don't get tested on them much after the first midterm. the final had nothing on simple differential equations or vector space, which we spent about 40% of class time on.

Professor Pearse is probably one of the best teachers at Poly. He is totally understanding of his students needs, and is just an overall great and funny guy. He does ask questions specifically to students, so be aware of that.

Pearse is a great professor for linear analysis. He does assign a lot of homework, but I think it is helpful in understanding the material. Despite my grade, I do think Pearse is a great professor to take and is a big help. His lectures are interactive, he's really into the material he teaches, and he'll pick on students for questions but if they don't know the answer he's totally okay with it. He assigns two homework assignments per week, one due on Tuesday and one on Friday, but they add up to what you would normally expect a full weeks homework workload to be so it's fine. The one problem I had with the class was how easy the quizzes were grades; I completely bombed a few quizzes but got back B's on them with not much explanation on what I did wrong (I'm assuming he gave them to a TA who graded nicely but that didn't help me learn, especially when it came to the midterms and finals). Go to office hours regularly, stay on top of reading, and you should do well in the course.

Pearse is probably the smartest guy I have ever met, and even more importantly, he is great at explaining things. He is also hilarious and actually made the class very entertaining. I expected him to have a 4.0 polyratings since my whole class seems to love him, so I was a little surprised to see it lower. There is homework due twice a week and it is graded only on completeness (some other reviews said one or two problems were graded but I'm pretty sure it was just completeness since everyone around me always got 100s on every assignment). Every Friday we have a quiz and they are generally easy and the two midterms are very reasonable. The final was very hard but he definitely curved it so most people I talked to were happy with their grades at the end. He is very available in office hours and responds to emails quickly. I highly recommend him for any class possible!

Absolutely terrible professor that goes over material took quickly, assigns too much homework, and have some of the most ridiculous test ever. Professor Pearse knows his stuff when it comes to graph theory. However, he doesn't do the best job of conveying concepts to the class. He would lecture to the board while he was writing so I wouldn't be able to write anything down until after he moved on to a new topic. He sort of expects you to know what he is talking about which made it difficult for me to learn in this class. The one thing I hated the most was that he would not stop lecturing even if the bell rang, he would go over by 5 to 8 minutes every day. He also doesn't provide answers to homework problems which was frustrating in trying to figure out if you were doing the homework at least somewhat right. The only thing I would praise him for was the about of partial credit you get on test, homeworks, and quizzes. Would not take Pearse again.

This is basically what you need to know: if you like proofs, take Pearse. If you don't, avoid his class if you can. I took math 335 and had no idea what it would be about, but my adviser recommended it to me. It ended up being a class with a lot of proofs and programming. The thing that was hard about it was that Pearse never taught us how to do a proof or how to program. He was very helpful in office hours, but it ended up being a waste of time because literally half of my class and his other class would be at the office hours, so you couldn't get questions answered. He also taught math 244 at the same time and when I checked out what their homework was, he would put a lot of proofs on the homework, yet proofs are NOT a part of Linear Analysis. He also assigned homework twice a week which was extremely overwhelming when you had no idea what was going on in the class. He was, however, very lenient about turning in homework late which was very nice of him.

The breakdown of the class is a little different then what I think most people are used to but I think it is helpful. Pearse is a really nice guy and all, but sometimes it feels like he was speaking a different language. He glossed over some of the later material incredibly fast and some of it didn't make any sense (I still don't know much about partial differential equations). Make sure you remember some material from Calc 3 and 4, most notable, power series (convergence and divergence; I know, gross right?!) and the del operator (What it does and stuff like that). I rather enjoyed Linear 1, so I didn't think Linear 2 would be bad; I don't think it should be bad, but Pearse didn't make it very easy. Simple questions were asked in a complicated way and during class, he goes down the row to ask for the answer, but sometimes, you don't really understand the question. He doesn't curve the class, and some of his midterm questions were damn near impossible. However, besides hard questions and homework, this class is very doable, do not mistake me. You really have to work hard on it. He is cool enough to post his notes on PolyLearn, so look over them and study the crap out of them. They really help with the homework and for the midterms. Also, office hours were a pain because so many people were there every day (at least he had them 4 times a week), but it was useful. Overall, Pearse isn't terrible, but he isn't exactly great either. Just make sure to really study his notes, go to office hours (everyone needed help on the same things), and really try on the questions (he is very kind with partial credit), and you should be okay.

This teacher goes into math too much in depth. He uses words and other mathematical vocabulary to present his lectures. I think we spent about 3 weeks learning some complicated topic that we aren't tested on. It is confusing when he goes that indepth and makes it hard to decide what to study when it comes to tests, but if you as him what is on the test he will clearly tell you the topics. His homework are crazy but if you go to his office hours he will help you out greatly. Note: if you ask him a question in class, he will go on a tangent and try to explain it in ways no one really understands. Overall, he is a great teacher and tries his hardest to educate his students.

Dr. Pearse is an amazing professor. He is extraordinarily intelligent and has a very obvious passion for mathematics and teaching. He wants nothing more than for his students to learn and succeed. Unfortunately, his smarts can sometimes be a source of confusion in lecture; he often talks about concepts using terms and ideas that are common place for him or grad students, but are unknown to undergraduates. There were a few times I had trouble figuring out what was going on in the lecture, but after going to office hours (a lot) I felt much more comfortable. Dr. Pearse's teaching style is very lively, upbeat, entertaining, and informational. His tests are MUCH more than fair, he's the king of partial credit. Overall, I'd recommend Dr. Pearse to anyone who has an interest in mathematics and a willingness to be challenged.

Weekly homework and quizzes are helpful and not too difficult. He's often happy to work with you if you need an extra day to get the homework in. His tests are a bit harder. They will definitely force you to think about the concepts in new ways, which is difficult to do in just a 50 minute class period. They are manageable however, and he gives lots of partial credit. Don't take this class unless you are VERY confident in your mathematical ability. This teacher give two midterms. The first was insanely hard but very generous grading. The 2nd was fairly easy. The final was very hard. Pearse gives the hardest exams of any professor at poly. He assigns EXTREMELY hard homework that literally no one knows how to do. It's actually crazy to what degree the class is confused. At one point I think the entire class had no idea what was happening. In his lectures he literally spits the textbook onto the whiteboard with very complex, hard to understand explanations. This class is very HARD even for very very smart kids. He is super helpful in office hours and lets you finish your hw in office hours if you can't finish it/ don't understand it. He tells the class he doesn't have time for questions, yet has time to go into irrelevant tangents because he thinks they are interesting. He reads from a power point that he probably cut and paste from a computer edition of the book. We are supposed to "read the hand outs before class" but honestly, not reading them is the only thing that keeps me awake in the class. I asked him to make adjustments for my learning disability but he made only false promises to change. One of the most frustrating things was that he wasn't willing to show steps in the algorithms during lecture. Also, I found him pretty useless during office hours because he doesn't really listen to your question. Instead, he talks about something much higher than you asked for. Even when I try to stop him he doesn't. I would recommend taking another teacher if you can. Otherwise, I recommend making lecture time just homework time (don't bother listening). The class would run better without him there.
