Prof Loving is a great professor who really teaches you how to write. At the beginning of the class, I was really bad but by the end I was much improved. He has a very... interesting personality. He can be intimidating and at times self righteous, but he is really good. He also has a unique sense of humor. Overall a good guy just difficult to deal with at times. For his class, Loving has you write 7 stories in the quarter and you have to go through the drafting process so you have to go through many drafts before you can turn in your final draft. It gets extremely frustrating and time consuming. I wanted to change majors several points during the quarter, but in the end it is worth it. I learned a lot more than I would have from other teachers and am not only a proficient writer but also a proficient reporter too (he has you both write a lot and do a lot of interviews so you are getting valuable experience from day 1). Overall, I recommend Loving, especially when compared to the other 203 teacher in the Journalism department.

Professor Loving is definitely understanding of everybody's difficulties with writing articles. In JOUR 203 he is there the whole way to help his students be successful in his class. He was always willing to add extra office hours when our class needed more help. Now that I have moved on to more journalism classes I can tell he prepared me for what was next. great professor!

Professor Loving overall is a very good professor. He seems intimidating at first, but really is just trying to help you. At the beginning of the year he tells you that you are supposed to write five or so stories during the quarter plus fifteen "blogs" which are just emails you send him with blurbs about how your news reporting and writing process is going. For our class he cut down the story count because of days he was out of town and was unable to look at drafts of our articles. If you take this class, MAKE SURE YOU START YOUR STORIES EARLY. Do not wait a month to start checking out your beats and get interviews. As soon as you know what your article is going to be about, go to professors' office hours and ask them for an interview. Its a lot easier than it seems. Just start early or you will regret it when you have two stories to finish with one week left in the quarter.

Dr. Loving presents a lot of work for the class, but he has a very underlying sense of humor that makes the class entertaining.

Loving is a huge pain in the ass. You either get an A or an F. An A is if you have hours and hours of time outside of class for interviews, drafts, and office hours. You write a few stories on the beat assigned (campus department)... For each you have to propose an idea, write interview questions, conduct 3+ interviews, write a draft, draft, draft, draft.. and in between EVERY step you have to go see him in his office hours which are FOUR HOURS long and he only gets to a few people. My class started with 26ish kids, halfway through half had dropped, and by the end a few got As and a efw got Fs. Seriously the hugest waste of time, I'm pissed I didn't take the equivalent JOUR class at Cuesta and transfer it, now that I failed I have to retake it here to make up for it and Loving is the main teacher. I'll wait for next spring!

Loving's classes are absolute hell. I had him for 203 and media law, and I sincerely hope to not have any more classes with him. He has an ego the size of Jupiter and it definitely reflects in his teaching style. He'll never compliment you, so the only way you can know that he likes what you wrote is if he says "Well, it's okay, but you're no Hemmingway." In 203, we were all assigned to different departments on campus for beats, and I ended up with one that wouldn't talk to me because they were holding a grudge against the journalism department for something that happened the year before. Loving wouldn't let me switch until I finally started to get the hang of it and win them over. We had to write five stories over the course of the quarter, which may not sound like a lot, but he made us go through seven or eight drafts per story because his standards were so ridiculously high. I ended up crying in a bathroom at one point because I seriously thought I was going to fail the prerequisite to all my other major classes. Law consisted of nothing but three take-home essay tests, which doesn't sound so bad, but the grading is completely subjective. I got an A on the first test so I studied the same way/same amount for the second test, but got a D on it. (I have no idea how I did on the third test since we took it during finals week.) There just seemed to be no rhyme or reason to where he decided to give or take away points. You are completely at his mercy. The only good thing I have to say about Loving is that he's hilarious. You will hate everything else about him, but you will love his sense of humor. Even so, it is NOT worth it. Do NOT take Loving if you can avoid him. Taking him will just give you lots of unnecessary headaches.

First off, I passed the class with a decent grade so I am not writing angry, rather I am writing concerned. Loving simply is not a nice guy, he insults people for the sake of insulting -- I swear it's because he feels the need to put people down so he feels better. As for the work itself, it is a huge load but doable (theoretically). He gives you 10 weeks to write 4-5 articles but makes you do 10 drafts per which is totally unnecessary and often has you make corrections that he will say you should not have done later, contradicting himself completely. Also, he is NEVER available. I have sat through three hour class periods hoping to be seen by him just to submit a finished article and he only manages to see 5 students in that time -- 5 students per 3 hours is not very efficient. I think half of my class said they were switching majors because of Bill Loving. Take him at your own risk is all I'm saying.

Loving will not take work that he thinks is better than his. His ego is his downfall because he feels threatened by a student who has better work than he does. Since it took him 12 years to graduate college he thinks everyone else should share in his undergraduate failure. Don't take him.

yeah his class is really hard to manage because you're constantly stressed but it feels really good when you pass. The content of the course is hard to recognize and you don't feel like you've learned much during it, but after you pass the class or at least finish you feel like you have learned a lot of the journalism world.

Professor Loving was the best teacher I've ever had, hands down. I learned so much about journalism and life in general. YES the class is hard. I legit cried at the end of the quarter when he told me I could write my final draft of my last story. 203 was the hardest class I think I'll ever take and was a fat wakeup call first quarter freshman year. But, I'm glad I took it and plan on taking media law with him too. If I am an athlete with about 0% free time and can get an A in this class, then anyone should be able to. Also, he's the only teacher who teaches 203 the right way. Don't just chose a professor because they are easy. Students who had Loving will pass you up in life.

i have not and will not recommend Loving to anyone. You may have to take him and for that I apologize. He really doesn't know what he's doing, even though he clouds that fact with making you rewrite every story you create to make it look like he is making you work. In reality, if you look at your first draft compared to your last, it is almost identical. So all the late nights and stressful feelings of maybe failing the course are all for not. But when you pass you do feel like you have accomplished something. Not exactly expanding your knowledge in the world of journalism, but rather the accomplished feeling of having experienced hell and still coming out alive on the other side.

Loving seems like such a great guy at the beginning of the quarter, but by the end, you'll hate him. He has tons of knowledge, but his teaching style is horrible. The amount of work is a lot, but isn't too bad if you are serious about wanting to be a journalist. But he makes you approve every single thing you do, and will make you do crazy things to get a piece of information that he'll later take out of your article. He makes everyone feel like shit when he's editing their work by making jokes and just criticizing everything. If you get stuck with him, just try to do everything you can to make him happy so you can at least pass his class.

All right, to be honest this was by far my hardest class here so far at Cal Poly. I know I'm only a mere freshman, but still. Loving is a great professor, and you will learn A LOT in his class, BUT it is really, really hard. There is tons of outside work you have to do, and honestly I'm just happy I passed the class. Like five kids in my class failed completely, and there were only about 16 of us in the class total. Take it if you are willing to put all of the work in, but don't expect an A. This class is HARD.

Okay I'm seeing a lot of hate here on Loving and I get where all of you are coming from, but I have to disagree. I do agree that Loving is a difficult teacher. He does NOT just hand out A's. BUT he is a good teacher and he sure as hell knows what he's talking about. If you take the time to talk to him about just about anything he knows, trust me. Don't take this class if you're not interested in journalism and don't want to put the work in. Do take this class if you want to learn more than you ever thought you could in one quarter and then feel like a superstar when you pass. This isn't a GPA booster, but trust me when I tell you the feeling you have when you pass this class is incredible.

A lot of people dont realize this, but Professor Loving is actually hilarious. You may think his lectures are monotone but you're not listening close enough. He sneaks in sarcasm and satire all over the place and about 2 kids actually paying attention in the class will get it. He's not gonna take your bullshit, he's not gonna coddle you until you figure out the assignment, he has expectations from Cal Poly students and if you don't live up to them, he's not afraid to fail you. I promise you'll learn more from his courses than any other J professor.

Loving is a great Law teacher. It is a really tough class- probably one of the toughest classes I have takes at Poly. But, I learned a lot in it. It is taught exactly like a law class you would take at law school. I spent hours working on the readings and in study group because of all the work he demanded of us, but boy did it pay off. I still know what I am talking about 6 months later. There are 3 midterms and a ton of reading every week. Make sure you form a study group like he suggests, it really helped me understand the laws.

Mass media law with Loving was kinda intense. He knows a ton about law (he went to law school), so he's definitely qualified to teach the class. At times the class made me a little sleepy (having it at 8 am didn't help), but some of the cases we covered really were pretty interesting. The tests weren't as bad or scary as I expected, and they were all take home which was nice (otherwise they would have been super scary!). Just have a good understanding of the cases in the book and apply them to the tests. I had a small study group and we met a lot at the beginning of the quarter, but less and less as the quarter went on. We all still did fine though. There is a lot of reading. I kinda stopped reading by the end of the quarter, but I paid pretty good attention in class, so I knew what was important.

Professor Loving has so much knowledge about law. His personal stories and experiences added to the class to make it more interesting. While there is no "homework", this class is more than likely the hardest out of the journalism required courses. Loving will bring in more than one student to "scare" you into studying. Listen to them! Find a study group as soon as possible. Break up the readings (there are about 20-40 pages for each class). Your grade is based off of 2 midterms and a final. They were all take home, but he will try to trick you otherwise (another studying scare tactic). Take notes on everything! These will hep you when you go to study later. The cases are more often than not, easy to read but harder to apply when given an example. Use your study group and go to his office hours. He is there to help you.

I had Loving for Law, Ethics, as well as for my internship. I personally did not find either law or ethics to be especially difficult. With law, just make sure to take notes on the cases he goes over in class and obviously pay good attention. Unless he's changed the tests, most questions will be based off these cases. You should read the book as well. He wrote it (or co-wrote it). It's quite a bit of reading, but you can get by skimming parts of it and concentrating more on areas of importance. If you are halfway intelligent, you should be able to decipher which parts are. Otherwise, good luck. You'll probably think this class is super hard. Loving's classes, like most classes, are actually quite straight forward once you figure out his system - something many people in my class struggled with. I got a B in law because there was one test where I sort of did it all the night before (open book take home test), and didn't care enough to look everything up real carefully. For ethics, make sure to participate A LOT. It's technically a seminar, so participation is pretty important. Even if you think what you have to say is dumb, I realized it's better to be stupid than quiet in that class. I found ethics pretty interesting. He tends to grade the first assignment the most harshly, but none of the assignments (all papers) were extremely difficult. When it comes to doing your internship though, I would not recommend doing it with Loving. I'm not sure if he's even doing internships anymore, but the whole set up of the journalism department internship class is not very good in my opinion. It's the only department in the entire school that gives you a letter grade for your internship (vs. simply a C/NC grade). Let's just say I don't think this is completely fair. But overall, Loving's not a bad guy. He's smart and a pretty good teacher too.

Professor Loving is the most arrogant, insulting, and inappropriate professor I have ever taken. I am an A-B student with a 3.4 GPA and have never had a professor belittle me or try to make me feel less intelligent. He spends hours in his office offering "help" to his students because of his absurd and methods of teaching that are set up for student failure, not to actually help students but to use his ego and need for power to belittle us. All of my instructors at Cal Poly have been supportive and wanted us as students to succeed, until I took Bill Loving. He has no business teaching at this college or any college.

Loving is a great teacher and he easily has the most knowledge of any professor I've had so far. He wrote the law book, and he would do most lectures off the top of his head. When asked about a certain case, he knows which judge said what, why they said it, and other really interesting facts about everything. The tests were take-home, and they are the only thing you're graded on. If you can't pass two midterms and a final that you take with an open book at home, you should reconsider your college education. His job is not to hold your hand on your way to an A. Loving is a good professor and has great knowledge about media law and ethics.

Loving is a joke. His class is structured around three tests. The first test was week 8 and the next two took place during finals week. His idea of Journalism is exploiting his co-workers using his outdated Cal Coast News website. He is the reason that Cal Poly journalism will crumble. I feel bad for students because you will take him at least twice through your four years at Cal Poly. Oh, and don't believe the "I'm a lawyer"stuff-- he never took the BAR. LOL.

Professor Loving challenges you to get to the "perfect" stage of practice makes perfect. In public affairs reporting, we submitted multiple drafts of election stories to him, which were revised up to 7 times-- hence the "practice makes perfect." Nonetheless, this class pushes you to become a better journalist-- clarifying information, asking questions and completing the story on time and in completion. While Professor Loving rarely responds to e-mail messages and occasionally does not show up for office hours due to a faculty and staff meeting, he does make every effort to help students improve their writing in this class.

Why is there a freshman in 402?? Anyway, this was my third time having Loving as a professor, and he made ethics quite enjoyable. The class overall had a much different feel than law. You must participate, but it's really not that bad. Just state your opinion on an issue once or twice each class and you're probably good. There were four papers, plus a short presentation that went along with one of the papers. It was a pretty interesting class and the two hours usually went by pretty fast. You don't really need to buy the book imo, as long as you go to class and take good notes.

Loving is an okay professor. He's really robotic in lectures and speaks in a pretty flat tone, which doesn't really matter if you enjoy journalism, but if you're unsure of your major its kinda useless listening in on one of of his lectures because you may just fall asleep. The only thing that kept me awake in his classes was the way he purposely talked down to his students. It's kinda funny if you get past the initial annoyance of it. Oh, and no matter what anyone says, Ethics with him is NOT an easy A. He tries really hard to convince his classes that he isn an objective grader, but like people who say they're cool, if you feel the need to say it, you're probably not.

Loving is a good person and good professor. His grading method is fair (he uses employee IDs instead of names) but he's harsh with grades. I ended up with a B+, which I was actually proud of because he takes the whole "C is average" thing very seriously. Ethics lectures may leave you frustrated because some student' ethics/reasoning abilities are psycho (and some think they're hilarious and should just stop). I found that ONLY speaking when I really knew what I was talking about was absolutely enough for full participation credit. Definitely try really hard on the essays and do your research. Email him with questions or go to office hours. It helps a lot.
