Amazingly, they get this guy to go over EE stuff for the EIT review. I don't think this man could lecture effectively if his life depended on it. I haven't taken a class with him, but I just sat through his EIT review session, and sub-par is already an understatement. By the time the review session was over, less than half of the attendees remained. As an ME, all I can say is: God help all Cal Poly EE's.

I gave this guy a chance, but hes just horrible. I went to his office hour and he questioned why I would show up, like I wasnt suppose to be there. Oh by the way he doesn't even tell you his office hours. May be he doesnt want you there? Oh wait, at the end of the quarter, the last class before the final, hes not going to review, hes going to lecture about how we DIDNT go to office hours. Well sir, why don't you TELL US your office hours instead of making us find your office and hope you'll be there. And if your going to tell us we didn't make use of your office hour, you better welcome us when we do show up. That's how this professor works outside of class, during class he has the most inconsistent teaching methods. Its extremely hard to learn from this guy. He views each problem in a different way, so your left to guess what hes doing and where hes starting from. And the pop quizzes just rip your heart out. 90% of people scoring zeros every quiz, its ridiculous. When someone gets 2/10 on a quiz they did damn well. The thing about most classes is partial credit can save you, but with this professor, its all or nothing. 5 questions on a test and if you do anything wrong, zero points for the whole problem. Great class average, 30 % on both midterms! Seriously, prepare to self teach this class, because your not getting any help during class. If you can, talk to someone who has the class earlier in the day and find out if theres a quiz because its just a waste of time if you go. Actually your going to score a zero on each quiz anyway, just don't go to class and your better off.

This guy is the devil. Don't try to contribute to the class discussion unless you absolutely know the answer. He'll call you out and make you feel stupid. He gives out quizzes randomly and you'll either get a 10 or a 0. He studders as he lectures and he smells like crap. Avoid this guy if you actually want to learn something.

Dr. Hawes is a mean, old, man. I will never again suffer another class from him.

This professor gets tired trying to explain things. He doesn't take any responsibility for any of the problems. It takes an hour to get the lab setup because he doesn't prepare for it in advanced. He goes to each group to try to help them with their problems, and every group has the same problems. He should just tell the entire class what to do which would make the lab take less then 2 hours. Instead with his lack of preparation and inability to perform his job the labs always take the full 3 hours and sometimes we have to rush to finish. Do not take this teacher for any class if you can get someone else. My friends who have had him agree with me in the fact that he can't teach anymore. He needs to do us the honor of retiring in order help all the student. Bow out dignity please!

He is not too great in lecturing. He just doesn't keep you interested/awake. His grading system seems somehow unfair. Several times I made the same mistakes on the quizes as my friend did, but for some reason I got a higher score than him.

I was unlucky enough to have Hawes for both lecture and lab. The lecture section was based on a final exam (50%) and a series of quizzes (50%). He has a tendency to give quizzes that are totally unrelated to the material he covers in lecture. In addition he is a very harsh grader, offering little partial credit. Even a minor mistake will result in a failing quiz grade. Since the quizzes make up 50% of the course, this can be severely damaging and demoralizing. He does explain the material well but he doesn't seem to test on what he teaches. His lab section is equally difficult. He offers little assistance in lab, so rely on your lab partner or other groups. His lab final is ridiculous (in fact in our lab section, nobody was able to design the system he asked for). He also doesn't wear deodorant. While this may be a cultural thing, I find it quite offensive when we both occupy the same lab room (especially on hot days). In conclusion, controls should not be difficult. If you value your grade and your understanding of this course, take another professor.

This guy can be a mean old fart, let me tell you. I wish I had payed more attention to these ratings before I enrolled in his class. He's one of those old semi-retired teachers that really doesn't give a flying fuck about anything he isn't required to. The only joy I got from his class was imagining him in riverdance. Be warned.

I really dont understand the ratings below. Hawes is just a really nice old man. If you actually pay attention in class he is an extremely good lecturer and explains things very clearly. Tests are a little hard but there is a good size curve at the end. He does not collect HW which is cool. I heard he expects a lot in lab, but in lecture he was awesome. He teaches a lot of 7AM classes so I think people just don't show up and then question why they dont understand anything. I would definitly take Hawes again.

Hawes was possibly the worst professor I've had so far at Cal Poly. He spent nearly half of his lectures for the day reviewing what he had gone over the previous day, and redoing the same examples you already have in your notes. He would then move on to new things which he was okay at explaining, not great, not terrible. His homework and test solutions that he puts online look like they were assembled by Helen Keller, with the pages scanned sideways and upside-down, and completely out of order despite the big numbers before each problem. His homework is not collected and your grade is dependent upon two midterms and a final, which would be great except for the fact that the problems he puts on his test either take twice as much time as you get for the test, or are on subject matter he never really even covered. I literally got 15% on my first midterm, 22% on the second midterm, and left the final absolutely sure I would have to retake this class in the fall despite having felt that I completely understood the course. I am still convinced that the only reason I got a C is because Hawes is so old and senile that he probable mixed up my grade with another person in the class. Avoid him if at all possible.

If you like smelly teachers Hawes is the man for you. During the 9 or 10 lab days he wore a total of two shirts. I guess he left his personal hygene back in the UK, along with his hair. (That wrap around aint foolin nobody) A below average teacher who is not a very friendly man. Avoid him if possible.

Honestly, I can find no reason that Cal Poly has not fired this man yet. He is completely incapable of teaching, and he is bitter about everything. Do not expect any help from him and do not fall behind in lab because he shows no mercy.

During lab we would have him check our circuit, he would check it and as I proceeded to explain, he would stop me half way repeat in his own words what I said and continue. I think he misunderstands some of the slang the younger generation speaks!! Otherwise he's alright. I think he knows his material well and can convey it on a reasonable level.

During this entire quarter all I could think about was how this professor reminded me of that small little dog that runs through the back of scene 23 in The Incredibles by Pixar. Seriously, if you look it up you will only be able to see it...
