for HCS 120 (HCS wasnt an option on this form): This professor does not care about the students. When students ask questions they get talked downed to and are too discouraged to ask questions again. Look out for the multiple choice tests, the answers usually require more thought, she might forget to mention the tests are multiple answer which is what she did to our class, after the first page of the test she mentioned it. She's very knowledgeable and makes it obvious she finds herself superior since she is the instructor. I feel like the only reason I did so well is because I have a true interest in horticulture outside of the classroom and had taken EHS 230 prior to taking this class. I think grades truly reflect a teachers ability to teach, this class felt like a big game where you were unsure what curve-ball she was going to throw next. Go to all of the lectures, even though she posts her slides, she makes a point to add information to them that you can only get coming to lecture. Good Luck!

Virginia may not deserve professor of the year, but she is a great educator. Many say she merely stands up and lectures information to the class. Open your eyes Cal Poly. You're in college. The main purpose of college is to independently learn and gain useful information for the rest of your life. A college class isn't supposed to be a fun happy go lucky environment where you as a student can 100% rely on the professor for every minor question and concern. Virginia's teaching style may seem hard to understand at first, but it's actually a great style. She makes you face your challenges and figure out these questions and concerns you have in an adult and intellectual way. She does answer your questions. However, she does not just give you the entire answer right away. That's too easy. Virginia helps you out as much as she seems fit and let's you figure the core of the problem out on your own. Take her classes. Don't be afraid of her teaching style. Embrace it. Embrace the fact that she prepares you for the cruel and difficult world ahead of you where real obstacles need real solutions to resolve and to come up with these real solutions, you need to develop problem solving skills without relying on someone else.

Took HCS 120, but that wasn't an option. Please do not take this class with her. Plays mind games with students, will say she isn't going to test on it, then test on it consistently. Does not provide study guides. Our midterm and final consisted of questions that followed the following format: Which of the following is not a number? A) J B) Z C) L D) 7 and you were supposed to read her mind and realize that you were answering the opposite of the question being asked. Only sometimes, it would be normal and be: Which of the following is not a number? A) 1 B)2 C)3 D) G and you would be looking for the true answer. She did not specify which questions played the opposite game, and which did not. You had to GUESS. By far the worst professor I have ever had. She does not care about the students at all, will laugh at you if you ask for clarification, and make fun of students on a regular basis. How she is still hired as a teacher is beyond me.

I took HCS 120 with Virginia and not EHS 120. The class really wasn't that bad. Yea, her tests were a bit tricky, but the quizzes were really easy. Basically, just memorize EVERYTHING and you will be fine. I got like a 99% in lab which really helped out my grade. She's really not the best professor but this class is definitely doable. My hard work is clearly reflected in my grade.

Only one word can describe this class: painful. Granted, if you must take it, as long as you study hard and come to every class you should get an OK grade, it is not fun at all. She doesnt present the material well, is quite rude to the students and will not help you in any way whatsoever. I found it helped me a ton to take Botany at the same time of this class (if thats an option for you) as the material overlapped. Overall, if you're already in the class, be ready to work.

ABORT ABORT ABORT. You can't ask her questions for shit. She doesn't give out study guides and she gives the most bland and non-understandable answers ever. Take her if you want your GPA to hit the tank.

virginia can come off as rude and sometimes be in her little bitchy moods. however, overall she is nice and knows a lot of information about all the classes she teaches. she has been in the industry for the longest and knows her stuff. she can seem condescending but she wants you to have the stuff down and know what you're doing in lab. she doesn't hold your hand, but rather shows you how to do it or corrects you after you have messed up. she can be boring in lecture as she has powerpoints and reads off them but she has a lot of good side information. she gives random quizzes a lot which take up the majority of your lecture grade. on these quizzes, you either know the material or you don't. she loves giving essay questions, so study up and make sure you are prepared for random quizzes. ask questions, she has the answers, and her classes usuallly have pretty cool field trips. probably not the nicest, approachable professor but virginia is still cool :) especially if she likes you

Horrible communication with students. Very unapproachable and not understanding at all. Does not care for student's success and seems like she does not want to help you.

I thoroughly enjoyed Virginia's class. Although most of the information was straight out of the book, she presented it clearly and clarified any questions I had.

Easy class. She recited the book from her PowerPoint and basically tells you what you need to know. Tends to get off track and tell stories about her neighbors garden. There is no participation credit so if you want to just show up for the tests you can.

Cal Poly holds itself to very high standards, and in my eyes the professors should meet those standards as well, and sadly Professor Walters does not. I have no doubt she may know a lot within her field but as far lecturing and teaching students she is horrible. She is very vague on her expectations and assignments for class, as well as the midterms. Does not care about students, if she did she would have notes on polylearn up by now. It's week 4 and every lecture she is asked about when will the notes be up on polylearn. Everyone takes notes but at the rate she goes there are slides that are missed. Her way of lecturing does not keep students interested and shows very much by looking at other students. Very very poor professor all around, unless its a 100 level class try taking something else or with a different teacher.

This is suppose to be a 2 unit activity. When I took this I had 18 units and thought it would be fun and interesting. This instructor is horrible; she does not present the material clearly. She is very disorganized. Instead of making it a fun activity she acts like its a real course with a written midterm and final. I would avoid this class if possible (spend your money on another class thats worth it)

Unhelpful, old and outdated information, only 1 teaching style (speaking lecture) no powerpoint or anything. Does not care about success of students. A true icon of the EHS department.

Although she's gone, I'm also leaving Cal Poly and I wanted to leave a review on Virginia. Virginia is not your typical college professor, I'll tell you that. But she is knowledgable, helpful and will make you think critically about whatever the hell you're asking her. She won't just hand you the answer or fix your issue, she will question you, ask about the logical things regarding your questions and at the end she has helped you figure it out. She may come off as a bitch, rude, or whatever. I have always been resepectful and shown her that although I don't know everything there is to know, I am interested in learning and TRYING to do the things she's showing you. I took 3 classes from Virginia that I didn't even have to take just because I know that I will learn a lot and the material would be interesting. If you want someone who will coddle you, hold your hand, and encourage you every step of the way you will not find that in Virginia. However, you will learn a lot, and once you get to know her she is funny and sweet. If there's one professor I can say I learned from while at Cal Poly it's Virginia regardless of her attitude and perception, she is awesome.
