Hess is a fun guy and knows his stuff. He isn\'t a good teacher because he does not clarify material and changes things from the textbook. He is lazy and does not keep up with the syllabus or dialogr (online participation activity) and is constantly falling behind in grading exams and projects. You get out of class really early though.

Hess is a funny teacher who gives you slides every lecture day. I didn\'t even read the book because his test are based on his slides. However, write down everything he says on the slides because it will be on the test. There is a large group project and just hope your team is good. 2 midterms, 1 large project, and a final. Our final was take home because it was on friday from 4-7pm. There are things called \"Dialogr\" and they count for participation and extra credit opportunities. I ended up getting a 100% on my final because i did a great job and had extra credit from those! Pretty simple class, basically no one gets C\'s unless your plain lazy

I'm only 4 weeks into the quarter, but I feel compelled to add Professor Hess and write a review that I may change later on down the road. Professor Hess walks into class every day with seemingly the same jeans and sandles, the same laid back "I don't give a shit" attitude. You'd never know the guy has a Ph.D from looking at him. The general consensus around the class at this moment is that the course load is fit for a kindergardner, he seems somewhat ill-prepared at times, and the class is generally unexciting. But what do you expect, hey? This is Orfalea we're talking about! Learn by doing my ass. One thing that indicates to myself whether a teacher is of quality is the syllabus-- whether it's updated and crisp and accurate ready to go for the quarter. Jeff still has dates and information from multiple quarters back, which leads to confusion. About three weeks into class, after I had been trying to keep up with the ambitious syllabus course-work (as many students), Prof. Hess informs us that he has abandoned the syllabus and should be taking assignments and orders from him. Hess does not respond to my emails which is equally frustrating. Thus far, Professor Hess has failed to reach my expectations and can't wait for the class to be over or progress to a more fulfilling experience.

I second what first poster said. Dr. Hess shows up every day with his Hawaiian shirt buttoned half way, his torn up jeans, flip-flops, and Burger King in hand. The entire quarter we had no more than an hour and a half of lecture. The typical class day consists of him giving out an assignment (typically due the next class period) and then giving us the class period to do it. He grades quite generously. Usually even poorly written papers get at least in the high 80’s. He is very disorganized and lazy. For example, Blackboard still had all of last quarter’s coarse martial (including the mid-term and grades). For assignments, he rarely types up a guideline, rather he just posts a “good” paper as an example or just steals Prof. Simon’s rubric. Also, don’t expect feedback on papers. All you get on a returned paper is a grade (mind you, it takes three weeks to get it back). After I got one paper returned, I realized I had made a huge mistake and duplicated a paragraph. He didn’t even notice. So it is quite evident he doesn’t even read them. Now I have to say I have somewhat enjoyed the easy grade, getting to leave 45 minutes early every day, and the somewhat flexible due dates, but I can’t say I learned that much and isn’t that what college is all about? NOTE: DO NOT BUY ANY RELATED COURSE MATERIAL!!!! I usually ignore it when other people post this suggestion on here because I know I will probably need it for at least something. Though you don’t! Even though he said it was required on the first day he didn’t have us read it once. If he does, he photo copies it for everyone.

The "dude" is a koook. He goes 100 MPH through SPSS because.. uh news flash.. HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND IT!! Ask him a question outside of the simple program he has run for years and -- DUH.. he starts to cut you down and doesn't even answer the question.. WHY.. Because he is clueless outside of his plug and play program. Kooooook

I have Hess for 419. I had him for 418 as well. He loves to waste students' money buy requiring them to buy the textbooks, and then never assigns any reading. Not a very good teacher either.

I really enjoyed Hess as a professor. He is super cool and laid back. I have not finished this class yet but I am expecting a good grade. The class pretty much consists of group work and during the lecture he emphasizes everything that will be on the test and says, "write this down!" I really enjoyed this kick-ass dude and found him to be the shit.

Hess was an okay guy. He played favorites in my opinion and you never get your tests, papers or assignments back which was a little sketch. I thought I did better on the midterm then what he gave me but oh well. Just pay close attention when he teaches you SPSS, its easy if you commit to learning it. The class is basically a midterm (mostly SPSS), a final (again SPSS and a some easy stat stuff which he tells you exactly how to do), a stat quiz (5%) and a group project where you analyze a company using, you guessed it, SPSS. I think all groups got a decent grade, just make sure to ask questions and give him exactly what he wants. Overall, not a bad class to sit through, I just wish I had put more time into it because I do think the material will eventually be applicable for marketing concentrations.

I loved Hess and I thought it was pretty easy to get an A. How to get an A: 1) If you aren\'t a big talker, here is how to get most of the participation points. Sit in the front by his desk and laugh at his jokes and occasionally ask how he is doing. Participation points covered. 2) Study everything he tells you for the Stats quiz and should get an A. 3) Midterm: memorize the SPSS practice guide, but dont forget to study other stuff too because there are quite a lot of mutliple choice questions. 4) Final: same for SPSS and there are lots of multiple choice 5) For the group paper, go to his office hours and have him look over it to give you more specific instructions 6) Do the Tuscan case, I think he grades easy on it.

Hess is an awesome teacher and I learned a lot in his class. He is the only teacher for 419 so all business students will have to take him. It was great to actually take something away from the class!

This was probably one of the most frustrating classes that I have taken at Cal Poly. Professor Hess is extremely unhelpful in the way that he teaches. During class he hands out notes every day, and then flies through them on SPSS (the computer program that most of this class is based on). If you get behind or don't understand what is going on, he will go over it one more time, but makes you feel completely incompetent for asking him to do so. He mainly relies on students having absolutely no idea what is going on after the first time he explains a process, and then wastes the rest of class slowly going from group to group while the rest of the class struggles. The workload isn't that bad, but the midterm isn't until week seven and covers a ridiculous amount of material. Also, don't rely on him responding to emails. Because he doesn't. Ever.

This guy is a kook..... he only eats fast food and is as lazy as a they come. Degrades students for no reason and plays favorites. Also needs a haircut. Did I mention he's an overall kook? kook

The project combined with the Final is ridiculous and he plays favorites A LOT! So if you want to be that kid sit where he can pick you out easily, try to answer every question (even if you don't know the answer), and if your a girl giggle at all his "jokes". He is extremely frustrating due to his unorganized and unhelpful lectures. He will let you work on your project during class except for the fact that he leaves early so you can't ask him questions. Just study and pick a good group and you will be fine.

So Hess isn't the best teacher, and he plays favorites, but he's not that bad. The tests are very fair and on exactly what is in the packets. If you know all that stuff (like memorized) and are clear on dates and you'll do well.

Hess is an awesome guy. He often lets you work on your group projects and homework during class time. Understand SPSS and make you you read his rubrics and stick to the for the group assignments. Class isn't too much work and is very enjoyable if you understand SPSS. One midterm and a final plus a group case assignment and a group SPSS project.

He had favoritism which was really irritating. He expected you to participate, but when he kept choosing the same people he had in 418 you kind of just gave up. Very chill person but also what I noticed was if you answered a question wrong he kind of humiliates you. Also, when explaining SPSS he goes at 100 mph and doesn't see all the hands going up to ask him to slow down. The midterm and final were ok if you studied, but you definitely have to go to the computer lab to practice SPSS for them. The group project was very simple but you don't really know what you're doing or how everything's going to come together until about weeks 5-6.

Professor Hess is incredibly straightforward. This man does not trick you. He teaches you fundamental concepts to help you succeed in your marketing career. Professor Hess is the ultimate homie. His exams are just like the practice tests. He genuinely wants you to understand the material because he knows this software will be useful for career. He's very laid back, usually leaves an hour early and gives you very simplistic group work based on the concepts taught in class. He does talk pretty quickly and can be a bit intimidating, but if you talk to him one-on-one he's really helpful. I would definitely take a class with Hess again. Just do the work and practice the software and you'll be fine :)

I thoroughly enjoyed BUS 419 with Hess. There are no surprises, and I feel as though I actually learned the class material. He goes through SPSS quickly in class, but if you spend about an hour each week in a computer lab practicing, it'll make the midterm and final much more bearable. Tip: go into his office hours after the midterm- half of the questions on the final are straight from the midterm!!

Hess deserves to be the model of what all professors should be like at Cal Poly. First off, Hess doesn't go through anything that is B.S. If it isn't important in the real world, he doesn't bother. Meanwhile, you feel like you ahead of any other college student entering the marketing world after each of his classes, because he actually teaches vital information. Along with that, he expects you to be giving him your attention for 90 minutes. That's right, he doesn't teach the full 2 hours ever, but that is because he wants you to be just as good as you would be working for a company. Full speed, ask any questions you want, and you will only gain skills and experience from it. Take Hess if you are serious about your education and future success. It really isn't much work, just pay attention for 3 hours a week.

jeffrey hess is a straight chiller. BEST PROFESSOR I'VE HAD AT CAL POLY. this class is probably fundamentally the most helpful and interesting and FUN class ive taken at cal poly, and professor hess contributed a lot to that. its interesting everyday and material is actually useful to the marketing concentration unlike most other marketing classes at cal poly. if you get the chance, you have to take his class. midterm and final are not bad, you just need to study, but he gives really thorough study guides so as long as you put in the effort you'll get a good grade. class distribution is Stats Review Quiz: 10%, Day 1 of class quiz: 5%, Midterm: 20%, Quarter long project: 20%, Final: 35%, class participation: 10%. I've had Hess for 418, 454, and 464 (Senior Project). If you want an A, take Hess. However, I warn you that even though you will get an A, it's not worth the stress he puts you through. Hess shows up for only about half the scheduled class time during the quarter. He will give you very little instruction and never reply to any of your emails. He will show up late to class every day, and end class early. If you are on a varying schedule, don't expect to know what time class is until right before he expects you to show up. Check your emails frequently. He loves to cancel class right before class starts, sometimes as close to 30 minutes before class time. All of his classes are group-oriented. You will get to know your team pretty well, but you will have no idea what is going on in the class. Most of your group emails will be titled "Has anyone gotten in touch with Hess yet?" The only great takeaways I got from his classes were how to use SPSS, and how to deal with flaky professors. I strongly advise you to take other teachers from the Marketing Department. Even though Hess is a charismatic and funny guy, he will teach you nothing; you will learn to hate his unreliability.

Just an awesome teacher to have senior year. Especially in his senior project class, you feel more like a colleague of his then a student. Though don't get too comfortable around him. Call him "Hess" or "ProHesser" and he will tare you a new one. So, yeah. Like you should all of your professors, make sure you show your respect to him and call him "Professor Hess".

Alright, first few weeks you're gonna be like, who is this dude? He dresses super casually and its just exploring a topic with his students on a daily basis. He gives ample time in class to complete projects and gives the group a steady project to build upon throughout the year. The book is actually very interesting and I would highly recommend it because it was a super easy read and has great info. The quizzes aren't too bad as long as you read the chapters (mid-level questions)
