Forte, Mary  

This teacher told me I was doing extremely well in the class. I was expecting a A , because she told me my papers were excellent and needed no further improvement. However she was not honest, especially when she gave me permission to miss a class for a feild trip. That determinded me from not getting a B, and I ended up with a C. Don't beleive a thing she says about your grade, she will not tell you the truth! She will appear at first to be fair, but as soon as evaluations are finished she will screw you over. She is also extremely unprofessional as I received the same e-mail as another student who was pissed about there grade too. She recycled the same lame excuse in both e-mails and thought the student and I would never speak again to each other,so she could take the easy way out. She's very two-faced, beware!!

Don't listen to the other people, Mrs Forte is a very good teacher. She never over does her lectures, and instead of assigning pointless writing assignments, she will usually let the class out early. The class set-up is phat too. You have to go to class like 2 times for the last 5 weeks of school, and the entire grade is basically 3 essays that you turn in at the end of the quarter. She is always willing to give new ideas and help you out during office hours. The final essay is apparently supposed to done on your own without any help from her, but she edited and corrected mine whenever I asked questions. When you take 134, definitly take Forte. One other plus is she is probably one of the hottest teachers on campus.

Talk about sweet lady, very helpful and approachable during office hours. However, I dont know if it was her or the course curriculum that made it worthless, i didnt get anything out of the class. It isn't that hard if you already no how to write. It isn't hard anyway, hardly any work. Just a few essays and a few in class essays. And your first drafts aren't graded so that is nice. And she is always willing to read your work, no matter how close to the deadline its due. You have to read this book and you get quizzed on it. I bombed the first couple and then got used to what she asked and aced them. And made up for it to come out with an A-. Point being, read the book, but all you have to do is no the thesis and one main point of everything, dont waste your time with anything else. Take her if you dont really care too much about it.

This woman is a dumb shit! I was suppose to get a C- and I ended up with an A while she screwed over the kid who really deserved it. Don't take this bitch, I was just lucky to get a good grade. I hope she reads this so she knows what she has done!

Forte is a really nice woman, I highly recommend if you take her class that you go talk to her about your essays and get to know her. She really doesn't do anything in class except go over overheads about essays. All she is looking for is LOTS of concrete detail and EXAMPLES for everything in every essay. It's super easy to ace her class. I don't think I really learned anything new, but I would recommend her for an easy A. If you do read the books don't expect there to be any essays on them. She gives you a huge list of essay topics to choose from for the essays she requires you to write. You can write essays on the books, but the only reason to read the books is to do well on those pesky reading quizzes. There are only like four per book or something. She takes attendance every day too so you can't skip class. Basically your grade is based on your four essays, class workshops, reading quizes, and thesis statements. Thesis statements are credit only so no worries.

What a hot teacher, if it wasn't for her 4 kids and husband i'd be in her office every day doing what i could to bring up my grade. And if i ever missed a deadline i could always go in and get an extension. Hottest teacher at our school. Damn i wish i could've done some "extra credit" for her. (Please don't delete this, i agree with all the nice things about this teacher, but people left out this very important aspect, i'm just trying to do her some justice on her beauty.)

Forte was relatively easy to listen to and her class was neevr boring. This may have had something to do with the fact that she is so god damn beautiful; I paid attention all the time. Yo may think that's immature, but the truth is, her looks DO help you focus in class. She had a few random quizzes, and the rest of the class was four essays, each of which were easy; everybody got at least a C but mot got a B. I would take Forte again, and I would love to go to office hours and try to add to my grade and my black book.

Professor Forte is a great English teacher. We read a few books and had about 6 quizes. As long as you did the reading you were ok. We wrote 3 outside class essays and 3 in class essays. We had no final. All we had to turn in for our final was an outside essay that she didn't help us on and an outside essay she had helped us on. Her class was realtively easy and not boring.

Mary Forte is a great english teacher!! She is really forgiving and wants to help you! She is available to talk to and is very approachable. We read two books and had a quiz once a week usually but were really easy, no need to study or anything. Going to class makes the quizes simple. 3 out of class essays and i 3 in class essays. She is really fair on her grading. Take her if you can!

This professor is fair and understanding. She really keeps her curriculum current and consistent with other professors. You will write about 4 papers. You can then choose which papers are graded again to count as your final portfolio. There are weekly quizzes about reading and grammer. They count very very little toward your grade. Most people in my class took zeros or low grades. This also makes the reading not mandatory. The reading is interesting, but there is A LOT of it. However, like I said, it doesn't effect your grade that much. I would really suggest taking Mary Forte. Very nice lady and has a very entertaining class.

Forte is a great teacher. Her class provides the info you need and she assigns what is relevant, not busy work. She is always willing to help and her quizzes are easy enough if you study her overheads. Hint...they are all on her website. She's super cool and approachable. Take her if you need an English course!

This class was horrible. The whole grade is based upon one paper and her grading sytle sucks.

I registered for this class thinking it would be really hard, but it turned me from a business major to an english-business double major. Mary Forte was very helpful with anything I needed regarding assignments. There were 5 quizzes that were easy if you went to class and read the assigned reading. Most of the grade was based upon a huge group report that took the whole quarter. Word of the wise...make sure you pick GOOD GROUP MEMBERS! I had two other people in my group, one who did most of here share of the work and one who did absolutely nothing. I ended up doing most of the project on my own, but Forte knew this because I was the only one talking to her about our paper. She also makes you fill out group evaluations. Overall, Forte was a great teacher. Definately take her for this class!

This was possibly one of the worst English teachers i have ever taken. If you like taking a class that has all the feel of an elementary classroom and feel like being talked down to the entire lecture than go ahead and take the class. I have never had such disrespect for a teacher in my entire career as a student and I have no idea how she is able to teach her at Cal Poly. Well, she doesn't really teach so...

Forte is a good professor. If you participate near the start of the quarter, she'll remember you when she grades. Stopping by office hours doesn't hurt, either. The quizzes are straight from lecture/reading. The reading is easy. You have to make a few presentations, but those are easy too. She's not a SCOM teacher so don't stress about them. Just follow the sample papers EXACTLY (They're on her website) and you'll do great. Don't underestimate that final paper, it's one of the hardest I've ever written. Bring it to her office hours... but you're required to ask her specific questions she won't just proofread it. And she goes super easy on the rough draft and super hard on the final draft, too.

This class is RIDICULOUS! Pretty sure Forte bases your final grade on how much she likes you...and beware all guys cause she definitely favors girls. I worked hard, didn't miss a day of class, spent approx 45 hours on the "group" project, and did well on all my papers and she gave me a C. I wasn't the only one this happened either. She tried to explain to me that the english department is "raising their standards." Forte seems like a nice woman, but her grading system is WACK.

While I liked Forte as a teacher, I hated the way she taught this class. Forte does teach the material well, but is a little disorganized in the lectures. The main problem with her is her grading methods. The whole efficiency points method is ridiculous and makes it extremely difficult for you to know where you stand in the class until you get your final grade. You could do every assignment, turn it in on time, but miss one minor detail and get points off in efficiency points. In this class, you have to have the same grade or higher in efficiency points as you do in the class. So you could have an A in the class and a C in efficiency points and the best you can do is a C. I wouldn't have a problem with this method if it seemed more fair. I turned in an assignment and forgot ONE word, and lost efficiency points for it. To me, that was a complete assignment, just lacking a minor detail, not an incomplete assignment. Forte was a fine teacher but I'll never take a class by her again because of her grading method.

Grading Policy is ridiculous. You can do every assignment and still get a C. I dont know what shes trying to do with her policy cause it does not represent at all what you learned in the class. I never got a letter grade till my final grade. Dont take her unless you are ready to do everything her way and not miss one day.

Mary is a very nice and understanding teacher. Her grading is very relaxed, she really cares about the students and their performances. Those freshman who didn't like her will think about how great she was when they're getting reamed in their harder upper division classes. I think she's pretty hot too, made class easier. She'll give you every opportunity fix your grade, and if you're a nice person she'll even take an extra step to see that you succeed. Definately take her.

I thought this prof. would be great but I was wrong. She would often contradict whatever she said in class and she never really explained the material but rather told you how it was to be done. I worked my ass off and got a C in the class, shows you how well her grading scale is. She gives 5 quizzes during the quarter and one exam. I kept getting D's on the quizzes and she never told me why I was getting docked points. I found out on the LAST quiz that it was because I was answering the questions in the "passive voice" and not in the required "active voice". One thing to remember if you take her, never use the form of "be" in anything otherwise she tells you it is wrong and docks points. The only positive thing in her class was that we got to miss 2 weeks of class at the end of the quarter because she has these "conferences" with the people on each proposal and if yours isn't on that date, then no class. WOO HOO! Plus, there was no real final exam. She did give an exam 2 weeks before the final and that kinda counted as the final exam. Overall, she was a good instructor. But she was hypocritical and contradicted herself all the time then got angry with you because of it. If you have to take her, just be prepared to do everything you write in EXACTLY the way she wants it done. Otherwise, you will be screwed.

Mary Forte was an excellent instructor. There was never any BS, she was always straight forward about how things should be, and made it very clear. She was very friendly and easy to ask questions. She always did her best to help. After she grades your work, she usually gives you an oppurtunity to revise it and turn it back in for more credit. Overall she was one of my favorite teachers at CalPoly.

Mary is hot, I do admit that. She is a wonderful teacher, great listener, and a fair grader. She has one of the most straight forward classes around. She teaches well, the quizes are all on lecutre material, there was no final during finals week. I would take her class again. Great for DRC students!

very fair...she's more than willing to help the students on their writing and all assignments for that matter. Doesn't feel like an engineering support course, it's actually fun, the only reason why I got a B was because I had a hard time making it to class on mondays because I had to work, and attendance is part of your grade. Take her if you have the opportunity, the class is very laid back and it almost feels like being back in H.S.

Forte is one of the great underrated Poly profs. Still energetic and vibrant, she is able to convey a potentially dull subject like technical writing with ease and humor. She doesn't play favorites, and you sense a genuine empathy from her. I'm not sure who all the naysayers below were talking about, but she was not at all condescending or rude at any time. She has her quirks--be prepared to rewrite most of the assignments in the class (at least early on--but she tells you exactly what to fix to get a perfect score). The points are not too hard to come by--the quizzes are ridiculously simple (never studied for one and got all A's), there are two projects that are supposed to be expansive but aren't really if you budget your time. A good group helps, to be certain, especially if you have an English type (a diamond in the rough in the likes of this class). I can unreservedly recommend Professor Forte (pronounced like forty, not four-tay, as I guessed going in) for this or any other class--not exceptionally strenuous, very helpful and a very good experience (and all the people I have talked to say the same thing).

I agree w/the below statment--I am a ME that doesn't like english, but Mary was great: very clear w/what she wanted, very nice. You'll get used to her quirks...just take her. You won't regret it.

Great prof. - don't know my grade yet but I can't really say anything negative about her. Only thing is that she marks off a lot of points on papers, but gives you chances to rewrite it and get most of the points back. Class took a lot of outside time w/ group members though. Good speaker, difficulty about right for a freshman class, and just a great professor overall. Just avoid using "is", "be", and "are" in your papers.

I seriously don't see how anybody could have a problem with Mary Forte. Throughout the quarter she proved herself to be a capable and solid instructor and a kind person who really cared that her students understood the material. She certainly has her quirks: her dislike of be forms (hint: to eradicate them, just use the Find feature in Microsoft Word) as well as grammar and style rules that you might not have seen elsewhere that might seem new to you. The truth is, though, this class is important. These skills could net a lot more cash for you in your future job. Engineering is not just crunching numbers, folks: there are presentations and reports, and if you manage to impress your superiors through those, you might just stay on after your division is outsourced to India. This class doesn't have the intensity that you would find in some of the other classes offered, there's less work but you do learn a lot. Stick with Forte-she's professional and empathetic, and really cares for her students.

Professor Forte is super-nice and always willing to help. I'm not sure what people are talking about when they say she is condescending...although she does have an easier, high-school level class. But it's tech writing! It's not going to be as intensive as some of the other major courses engineers have to take! She lets you rewrite just about everything for full credit (after telling you exactly what to change). If you're willing to do a bit of group work, you will get an A or a B. It's pretty hard not to. Great (and easy) teacher.

ENGL 149 with Prof Forte was a fun class. It was not boring like some of the computer science or engineering classes. She is a fun teacher, and the assignments she gives are appropriate for a technical writing class. They are not tough at all if you don't slack too much. Quizzes are easy, but I lost some points in the in-class essay. But the good grades my teammates and I earned in the group work (user manual, product recommendation report and presentation) balanced the score. Moreover, she curves the scores. It's really helpful if you are in a good group. Overall, it is an easy and fun class with Prof Forte.

Professor Forte is without a doubt the biggest milf on this campus. Mary, as I like to call her, is probably around 45-50 years old, but has the tight little body of a 20 year old. Yes, she is used goods and has pinched off 4 lovely kids, but my love for her is on a higher level than superficial things like those. Most of the time I could barely concentrate in class because I was always wondering what color her panties were or if she was wearing any underwear at all! Unfortunately, I never had the courage to ask her out on a date because I would be risking my grade. Oh, if I could do it all over, I would forget the class and just confess my true feelings for her face to face. You only live once, right? MARY FORTE I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER AND ALWAYS.

I thought that I would enjoy Forte's class. In fact, I remained convinced of this for most of the quarter. She lectured well and the material and projects held my interest; however, after the quarter completed and final projects came due, I realized that I had hoped in vain. In short, Forte can teach, but she grades poorly. I tried to follow her directions carefully, but she marked me down on numerous assignments because 'it wasn't exactly what she wanted.' I would have appreciated her actually telling me what she wanted! The worst part remains that all major assignments get graded after the quarter ends. Thus, you do not see how badly you got screwed until after the quarter completes. Her class seems deceptively easy until you reach the end, at which time you can do next to nothing. I've taken a number of college/university english classes and have never encountered such inconsistency as in Forte's class. I received hard-earned A's in EVERY other english class (including upper division), except for English 149. If one could read her mind then maybe this class would have some worth...it's a shame really.

My evaluation almost echos the last person who evaluated Forte. Forte presents the material well and I enjoyed coming to class, even if it was at 9am. Attendence is mandatory, she allows you to miss one day, but any day after that will result in -5 points in class participation. Fair enough; too bad Class Participation is only 25 points, so if you miss one day, you're already sitting at 20/25. The only graded assignments during the quarter other than the final projects are quizzes and one small presentation. Every other assignment is done for credit. If you miss an assignment, you just turn it into her during her office hours and she'll give you credit. The big problem is three things really determine your grade, a final essay (200 points), a User Manual (100 points), a Recommendation Report (200 points), a Group Presentation on the User Manual (50 points), re-writting an earlier "Credit/No Credit" assignment (50 points) and 5 quizzes (20 points each). All of those assignments, aside from the quizzes, are due either the last or second to last week of the quarter and are not graded until the quarter has ended. The User Manual and Recommendation Report projects are relatively simple, a bit time consuming, but not really challenging. And watch out for "be" forms, especially "is" and "are." Forte cares more about verb usage than anything else.

Professor Forte gave us a clear understanding of Technical Writing and managed to keep our attention at 9 in the morning. She is very flexible and understanding with late work and in answering any questions you may have.

Mrs. Forte is a good instructor. Being in Engineering I hate english grading systems. Hers was pretty straight foward. I did everything in the course and got a B. I don't know what else I could have done to get a higher grade. Alot of points are from group work. Make sure you don't get piece of shit group members. Seriously, or you will be very pissed off. She presented material clearly and give you an outline which tells you what needs to be turned in and at what time. Everything that was due had examples so you were never left in the dark. I had a friend in another English 149 course with a different instructor and they had to do more work than us. You can't go wrong by taking Mrs. Forte for ENGL 149.ND.

Mrs. Forte is definitely the best English professor I have ever had. I'm a slacker and I still managed to get an A in her course. Just do the required work and it's fairly easy.

Mary Forte, or as she is known in ViperOps, M40, is a great english teacher, and an even better undercover agent and assassin. ViperOps has done a very good job at making her appear human, but if you pay very close attention, you will catch project M40 slip up and reveal herself as a robot. For example, if you look at your graded reports, she does comment in english, but in machine code defined in m40.h. Rather than saying "put more space," she will write "H3." The only way to destroy proect M40 is with a silver-tipped bullet from the anvil of hiphestus.

Mary Forte was a savage. I loved her class. There's a lot of group work involved, but that's expected for tech writing. It was fun and everything we did was relevant and helpful. Take her if you can!

I felt that Professor Forte did a really excellent job in conveying the information for assignments and plain understanding. She had quizzes once and a while, and would tell you about them ahead of time. They were simple, with just knowing terms and fixing sentences. She had an in-class essay in the beginning that wasn't graded and in the end that was, where you write a memo or business letter. I found her projects to be relatively moderate in terms of stress level, and they helped with understanding tech writing. She is really helpful in office hours as well! After what I've heard about the other tech writing teachers, I am definitely happy that I took her!!!

Forte's definitely one of the better teachers I've had from the College of Liberal Arts. Being an engineering major, I hate putting up with the profs who are nonsensical and vague... However, Forte was straightforward in presenting the material and even gave an outline of when every assignment in class would be due. I'd definitely recommend taking her section, although I can only vouch for her 149: Tech Writing class. But she always dressed and presented herself professionally and was helpful if your group ever had confusion on a project. Just don't get stuck in a shitty group or you'll be miserable the whole quarter. Luckily you don't get into groups the first week of class so be sure to scope out the class, and take note in your head of who doesn't appear to be a slacker. My only complaint about Forte was her method of marking your paper. It's a bit confusing but as long as you put in the time, avoid loosing more than a few efficiency points, and get to know her a bit you'll be fine.

Forte is a good teacher. She is very straight forward and presents everything is an easy manner. The key to this class is to PICK GOOD PARTNERS. There is only one individual project and there are two group projects. Your team members make or break your grade unless you want to work your ass off. There are weekly quizs that can be kinda tricky, but just take good notes. She is extremely anal about be forms and such, but just take your stuff into her office hour and she will basically grade it before you turn it in for real. Great teacher and extremely fair.

Had her a couple of years ago. If you're one who hates taking English, I definetly recommend taking her. 1.) Understandable 2.) She's hot (=D)

She's a good teacher. But it seems a lot of this stuff isn't hard to begin with. Do not buy the book, that thing is useless, it'll just be a waste of money. Quizes are simple and as long as you learn that Audience and Purpose are the key things (along with what else is going on in that week) you should be good. Assignments are easy as well. It's just a different way of writing. Instead of having 1 large project like most other classes, she opts for 2 smaller ones. Which I really think is better. Makes them much simpler, and as she said, they could be done by one person. So as long as you get in a competent team, it should be good.

Forte gives you at "English 149 Contract" which should be an "English 149 Contradiction." This packet of assignment information, class schedules, and other crap is probably the WORST example of technical writing I have ever seen. It was VERY confusing and unclear. It took a few weeks to realize what everything in there meant, and find the information I needed for my assignment. Oh, and the assignment names might change in the class, but not in the packet. Like "User Manual" in the packet is the "Assembly Instructions" in the class. You are never told in class what is due when, or even what to do for the assignment. You just have to read about it in the packet. You better be organized because if you look at your packet Friday, you may notice a research memo due Monday that you had no warning about!! Then in class Monday, she goes "what do you own me today?" and she hasn't a clue. She has to look it up in her packet. Forte always struts into class 10 after the hour and begins to set up whatever it is she does. EVerything she teaches is straight from some simple book, or just common sense, and she teaches like she knows everything about how engineers to reports. YEAH RIGHT...she has no real experience, has only read a book, and puts that in overheads, and makes lame examples. Then gets off topic and talks about stupid things that are useless. She always runs to the very last minute, or even over sometimes. I had a midterm on the other side of campus right after her class, and that day she kept talking for 3 or 4 minutes over about NOTHING. I feel she disrespects our time when she shows up late and is not prepared to start on time. She didn't even teach a class before ours, so there was no excuse. Her heels made her walk to slow to class. There are quizzes every week that are simple if you review notes beforehand, which i didn't do because it hurt me to look over and remember the previous class. Group projects are ok...easy enough, but the topics are stupid. I think I would have enjoyed creating assembly instructions for something real other then a "dinosaur re-animator" or "invisibility device" made from toilet paper "core" and some made up power source. Don't take her, unless you really don't care about learning. I don't think she deserves to get paid by the university, or our tuition.

This class was honestly just a waste of time. Especially when you\'re taught about how to write a resume. Be warned. The way I learned how to write a resume from this class was complete crap. I passed my resume (the way I wrote it for this class AND did great on it) to several people I know personally who are hiring managers and HR people for MAJOR companies to look it over. They looked it over and told me they \"didn\'t like it.\" They told me that it didn\'t fully explain all my skills and it will kill my chances of getting anywhere with the hiring managers. They understood that I wrote it that way because I was taught that way but they told me flat out \"it\'s the wrong way.\" I had great feedback that involved me changing my resume completely that wasn\'t even close to the way I learned it from English 149. This goes to show you that not everything you\'re taught by some fool who learns it from a book is right. Be careful with this class and just do what you need to do in order to pass. At the end of the quarter, forget it all and learn it from the real experts in the field.

Going into this class, I thought it was going to suck all the fun of writing clean dry. Actually, this was probably the most enjoyable class I have taken so far at Cal Poly, as well as the easiest. I thought that the project, where we took apart a device and wrote a repair guide, was really neat, as it gave us hands-on experience one would not expect from an English class. will say, however, that you don\'t know your grade until after the class is over with, which is highly frustrating.

Despite the fact that ENGL-149 is a complete joke and waste of time, I thought that Mary's teaching abilities were exceptional. She made an effort to present material in a fun (if cheesy) way, and she was always positive and outgoing. Her grading policies are very lenient, so getting an A or B in the course will be no problem whatsoever. A common complaint among her 149 students is that she really doesn't know very much about engineering subjects. While this may be true, it doesn't effect her ability to present the course information, so such criticisms should be taken lightly. I intend to recommend her to anyone looking for a good ENGL-149 professor

This was, honestly, one of the most enjoyable English classes I have ever taken. Most of the writing was done in a group, so if you pick a good group, you're golden! Professor Forte was such a great help and was really understanding of making up quizzes and turning in assignments late with a valid excuse.

Forte was an alright teacher. I didn't learn much. It seemed like the majority of the class is common sense with formalities in professional writing. Her quizzes are easy as long as you pay attention in class. She tells you a fact will be on the quiz. The iFixit project is the biggest part of the class. Make sure you get a group that works well because that is a fairly big time commitment and you'll need to work well with people. Everything else is basically just turned in for credit which you can do the night before. Overall not a ton of work and fairly easy. Do your best on the stuff that you turn in for points and you should get an A or B at the very least.

She's hard to understand at times because she's everywhere. She makes you do this project with iFixit which is dumb because you end up having to spend way too much time than necessary on it because you have to deal with iFixit it grading you and her. Plus, her corrections on the project don't even line up with iFixit wants you to fix. This class was a mess. I wouldn't take her.

As an engineer I was terrified of another English class. Honestly I barely put an effort into this class and got a B! I was more focused on all my other classes. There is two projects that are both due the last week of classes. Super easy just get it done 9th week so you don't have to worry about it during dead week. This class is SUPER EASY. You do not need the book. She has five quizzes but you can guess and still do well on it.

Forte is a nice professor. What I don't like about her class is that you hardly know what your grade is... She grades EVERYTHING (That has points, not credits) at the end of the term. I though I was going to get an "A" on this class, But then after she graded everything at the end of the term, I ended up with a "C+". The class is easy to pass for sure, but I don't think is that easy to get the "A". Those quizzes can kill you (Like they did in my case); so study for those. You won't learn much in this class, I recommend that you take ENG 310, instead of Eng 149 if you want to learn more.

I felt like I did not learn anything from this class. She has lectures which don't really seem to apply to what we work on in class, and there a quizzes based off of those lectures and reading that is just as irrelevant. Most of the focus (and grade) in this class is the iFixit project and the Recommendation Report, both which are very quick to finish projects if your team knows what they are doing.

Overall, I really liked Professor Forte. Although grading/critique format is a little strange, she seems to be very well versed on the material and is easy to reach by email for questions. She does the iFixit project, which although it's quite a bit of busywork, is still a lot of fun. She is very organized, and gives you a schedule of everything that will be due and when, and didn't have to make very many changes to it throughout the quarter. In addition, she gives you Assignment Descriptions that tell you exactly what you're supposed to do for assignments in case you miss class on the day she explains it. The only thing is that sometimes, she doesn't mention when something is due until the day before, and only "reminds" you as if you're supposed to already know. This is probably because we had the schedule. Overall, she provides helpful resources, is friendly, and is a good professor for sure.

Forte's class was the one that took the most effort to get to for me. She takes attendance every day and gives boring lectures on things that you should already know, like how to write an email. The being said, she is one of the easiest teachers I have had because she doesn't expect much. The class was practically a guaranteed pass because the whole grade is based on a couple of group projects and quizzes. WARNING: if you are not comfortable not knowing how you are doing in a class, do not take this one. 90% of your grade is decided in the last 2 weeks and you will not know what you got on anything until after the quarter ends.

Forte's 149 wasn't a hard class. It just consisted of a LOT of work. Once you turn in your assignments you will realize that she is a very tough grader. There are quizzes every couple weeks, projects, papers, a presentation, in-class essays and a final exam. The workload really piles up towards the end of the quarter when there are multiple things due within a span of a week. The class was pretty easy but I don't recommend taking it with Forte. It's just a lot of work only to be graded very harshly. She treated this class as if we didn't have any other classes to worry about. Highly recommend taking it during your freshman year or at your community college if you're a transfer student like me.

Professor Forte was really great at explaining her lecture material and her slides were always funny. However, her slides were always long and would bore some of the students who didn't care enough about the class. Her quizzes are fair if you study and she usually gives you answers for them if you pay attention during lecture, but the one thing I disliked about this class was that nearly all of the graded assignments were due on dead week. You could technically do some of the assignments beforehand, but if you waited like me, you will not have a fun weekend during dead week.

This is a great professor. She knows when too much information is lectured and will stop at that point. Grading is very fair, and adequete time is given for all assignments.

She is an awesome professor. This is also very nice and easy going.

Forte puts a lot of professors to shame. She makes class fun with relevant, recent examples and in-class activities. She keeps lectures brief enough, so that you don't dread coming to class everyday and yeah... She clearly knows the subject well and enjoys teaching the class. Her grading is fair and she's dedicated to helping you improve your writing. A+

Mary is a doll. She's super cute and friendly, but her grading system is kinnnda sketch. You literally have no idea what your grade is the whole quarter. All of the graded assignments come in the last week, and you find out your grades after the class is over. The workload was extremely manageable, it just sucks not really knowing what to expect until you get your grades once the quarter is already over. Attendance is mandatory. The work is a lot different than a normal english class, but extremely relevant for the corporate world. Overall, I'm glad I took this class. Oh, CONCRETE DETAILS ARE EVERYTHING!!! Know this for the GWR. Use very clear, concise, and detailed examples.

Great teacher! Really nice and makes lectures entertaining. There's only 4 quizzes and they're easy if you study. This is a nice class to take for the GWR because it's actually useful and relatively easy; it's basically learning grammar and formatting.

The class is structured to have 4 quizzes, 1 large group project, and various writing assignments that are tied to the lectures. She has her own website, but it is a bit disorganized. The lecture slides are sometimes not up there, but she will give them to you if you ask for them. The 4 quizzes are fairly straight forward, they're a recap of the 1-2 weeks before the quiz. Go over your notes, and skim the reading. The class does have a reading schedule, but it is only really useful for the quizzes. The large group project lasts the entire quarter, so make sure you pick people you like! Your job is to come up with an "improvement plan" to improve something on campus. For example if your plan is to implement a rent-a-puppy station on campus, you need to: determine what problem you're trying to solve (lack of puppies), consult the person/people who can help create this station, perform surveys (try surveymonkey!) on students, research articles.. etc. It isn't as bad as it sounds when you're in a group. There isn't a final for the class, but there is a GWR (graduate writing requirement) that is given during finals week instead (there are also two other GWR opportunities earlier in the quarter so you can skip the final GWR if you pass one of those).

I am writing this to inform you of Mary Forte's Corporate Communication class. ;) I had Forte for 149 and 310 is essentially the same class. The class consists of: - 4 quizzes - 3 attempts at the GWR (make sure you can write 3 pages, front-back-front) - About 10 writing assignments - Group Recommendation Report Forte takes questions from the lecture for the quizzes, so make sure you pay attention in class and you'll do fine. Most of the class didn't bother taking notes because the lectures are seemingly trivial like how to writing a resume or how to write an e-mail. You might not learn a lot but you will refine your writing. For the GWR, make sure you're writing the whole time. I only had about 1.5 pages of writing for the first attempt because I spent way too much time writing a nice introduction. Quickly brain storm your arguments and counter arguments on your position on the topic and write write write. The writing assignments throughout the quarter were pretty straight forward, consisting of writing memos, business letters, presentation slides, and your resume. Just make sure you include purpose, detail, and action to all your assignments and you're set. The difficulty of the group Recommendation Report really depends on what your group decides to do. You basically have to write a report to some group, organization, company, etc. about some change you want them to (hypothetically) implement. For the last week of class, you'll present your recommendation, why it should be implemented, projected costs of the implementation, etc. to the class. For grades, you won't know what you have until the end of the quarter when they're posted. You just have to "feel" your grade based on your quiz scores, assignment scores, and how well your group put together the report. As long as you follow her specifications, it should be a straight forward A. Overall, it's a really chill class with a light load (I spent maybe 3-4 hours a week on this class). Forte is a very nice lady and is very knowledgeable on technical writing. The class did feel a little too concise but I'd definitely recommend her.

Mary Forte is very nice and caring. She has a lot of projects and assignments for you to do, none of which are too hard, but they are time consuming. You get several attempts to pass the GWR, and she lets your rewrite one of the assignments. There are 4 quizzes through the quarter, but no midterms or finals. Through the year you work with a group on a large recommendation report for the city or Cal Poly which requires a lot of work outside of class with your team. She does take attendance everyday, but I don't know what she actually does with it. All of the lecture material in found on her website. Overall, good class.
