Petray does her best, but she doesn't seem up to speed with the capabilities of her students. She uses powerpoint to outline exactly what she's going to say and passes out paper copies to her students, which can be helpful but also makes it difficult to pay attention to her and get the REAL points you should be notating. The material itself was really interesting but unfortunately crammed into a short quarter, so aim to take this in fall if you can. Definitely buy the book and do the readings, but also attend class because she will narrow down the points she really wants you to focus on. At times the subject matter can be dry, but she goes out of her way to apply it to us. My one complaint on her views is she grew up on the East coast and is not very informed on west-coast dialects, so at those moments the class became the teacher. Despite my mediocre grade, I thought that overall the class was wonderful and only wish circumstances had panned out better.

Dr. Petray is such a great teacher...I have had her for three quarters and I keep taking classes that she teaches because she is awesome. She expects a lot from her students because she is very smart, but is flexible and will listen to student concerns. Not an easy grader, but spends a lot of time making comments and trying to be helpful in her criticism on papers. She has a great personality and makes class interesting.

Professor Petray is very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and sweet. She may be a bit of a hard grader on the essays but the multiple choice sections on the test are a guaranteed A. She is very helpful and provides a study session before every test that lets you know exactly what the questions are going to be. Note that you should show up to every class as there is group work where you are graded on participation and pop quizzes quite frequently.

Dr. Petray was very straight forward in what she wanted you to know for exams. There were a lot of books, but she broke down the reading in a manageable way. In addition, the books were interesting, so it made the class a lot easier. This is a good class when taught by her!

A lot of the students in my class seemed to complain that the course was hard and the material was confusing, but in all honesty I found it extremely straight-forward. Show up to class, take notes, and you are in the clear! I didn't put too much work into this - I did the hw when it was assigned (but never did the reading, except to clarify any concepts I was confused about), and there were only 2 exams to study for. I found the prof to put a lot of work into the class and she does her best to address everyone's concerns and make the material interesting - she was also very fair about grades! My only complaint was about the research paper, but looking back I guess it wasn't too big of a drag. Just get an early start and you'll be fine.
