This professor is amazing. I haven't finished the quarter yet, but I already know he's my favorite teacher at Cal Poly. Very unbiased and clear in his lectures. This is one of those people who are really meant to teach because they are just so competent and passionate about it. His one downside: he assigns a LOT of work. I wasn't taking many classes this quarter and I was still overwhelmed. I would say take RELS classes from him, but be prepared to work if you do.

Do not take Lloyd-Moffett if you want an easy A. If you are interested in the subject matter and like learning about the world we live in: you HAVE to take this guy. His class is demanding, but extremely rewarding. Loved his class and didn't mind the amount of time that was spent doing it.

He is a great teacher, but at times his class becomes repetitive and boring. Easy class to fall asleep in. He really knows his stuff and expects you to as well. The tests go into extreme detail. Not even close to being an easy A. You will need to study a lot to get a good grade.

Overall the class was pretty interesting. It's very straight forward and can be a bit dry. Professor Lloyd Moffett is a great teacher though. He explains the material really well and makes class interesting. You have to put in a lot of work and if you go to all his EC opportunities, that will help your grade significantly and they were pretty interesting as well. In general, it was not an easy A, but it was a very interesting class.

Professor Lloyd-Moffett teaches a two hour lecture and although it was my only GE class I took this quarter, it was my favorite class to go to. He presents all the information very well because he designed and wrote the course and as long as you pay attention the class is informative and interesting. He is quite the character and made the lecture of about 120 students all laugh multiple times throughout the lecture. He's very passionate about the class and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs to fulfill that GE area

This class was amazing. Lloyd-Moffett really does an amazing job providing a well rounded view of different world religions. He offers some really, really awesome and fun extra opportunities as well. He's a really fair professor and an awesome guy. Would recommend this class for the GE D3.

Professor Lloyd Moffet is a cool dude. He's hip as can be and knows his stuff about religion. He presents every religion on an even playing field in a way I probably couldn't without offending someone unintentionally. He make solid arguments and counter arguments for each one. He shows no bias to any one religion. The lectures are fun but long. He lectures the whole 2 hour block of class everyday. Also his tests are insanely hard. I never got better than a C. Verdict, if you want to learn a lot about religions in a short time take Moffett but don't expect it to be an easy A. This is a hard class.

This class is super cool! Professor Lloyd-Moffett is super knowledgeable and really funny. All of the lectures had really interesting information and they were really interactive. Some of them had videos and stuff from present day or from places the professor had been to. He has a bunch of cool stories about places he's been and people he has talked to. As for the class work, study for the midterms. A lot. They're pretty hard if you don't study. The final is creating a video on religious pluralism, and I thought mine sucked but I got an A on it. He holds review sessions before each midterm and they're really helpful to go to. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There's a few essays but they're pretty easy and he grades them pretty easily. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities and its definitely worth it to do them. Overall super fun class.

I was so scared going into this class. I am not religious at all and had never taken a class about religion. This class isn't easy, but it isn't as bad as i thought it would be. I got a B after working super hard and most people got a b or a c. It isn't an easy GE...but it is interesting and not the worst. After every test there is a 2 page paper due but no cumulative final. If you are better at writing/projects than tests this could work for you because they are weighted pretty evenly. Overall, not bad but not great.

Professor Lloyd-Moffett is an amazing professor! I never would have chosen to take a religion class, but I was blocked into it so I decided to stick with it. I am so glad I did. I have never been religious, and this class opened my eyes to a completely new world and made me realize how ignorant I was. The class was super interesting and engaging. There were reading quizzes for homework and I forgot to do a bunch of them but they aren't worth a lot so it didn't affect my end grade at all. The tests are hard, study EVERYTHING. There were a bunch of details I didn't think were important but they were on the test. The shared study guides are super helpful and you can find a bunch of good Quizlets. I would definitely recommend this class, I learned so much and it was hard, but very rewarding.

Nothing but good things to say. Lloyd-Moffet is the best teacher at CalPoly. He is in no way easy and you're gonna have to take his class seriously, but it really is a rewarding experience. So I took REL X205, AKA Jesus: the class. I had the very last registration rotation--it was a pretty interesting experience. HE is an awesome teacher. Tells you everything from historical standpoint exactly as it is. But I could tell a lot of fundamentalist Christians were pretty upset by the FACTS presented in class, which means this class does exactly what it's supposed to do: teaches you the facts and history behind a religious figure without preaching. It is SO interesting. Everyone should take this class. It will help you understand a huge part of American culture, whether you're a Christian who wants unbiased answers or an atheist that wants to affirm why you think what you think. It's A LOT of information, but there is extra credit (he lets you come over to his house and eat his wife's brownies and watch movies). There's minimal homework, 2 midterms, and a non-cumulative final. Not difficult.

HE IS AWESOME in the Jesus Class. He is full of information that is very, very interesting knowledge about Jesus and the Historical take on who he was. The class goes of of historical sources. He understands that his class does not fulfill any GE or anything (unless your a RELS minor). BUT his midterm and final have EVERYTHING that he teaches on them so pay attention because there is a lot of information. He did curve the midterm though and boosted A LOT of peoples grades

I took this class because I'd heard a lot of people recommend it, and I like learning about Jesus. To be up front, I call myself a Christian. I thought the presentation and the class was good; however, I have a serious problem with his claim that this is an unbiased look at the historical picture of who Jesus is. The biggest problem is that almost ALL of his modern sources are written by skeptics or those far outside the norm of Christianity, and the class itself is based on a book by Bart Ehrman, who is himself agnostic. I think it's great to use those authors to illustrate one side of interpreting Jesus, and I appreciate hearing perspectives different than my own, but Dr. Lloyd-Moffett has painted the picture that these are the sum total of all credible authors about the historical Jesus. There are many scholars who would say that the Jesus of faith and the Jesus of history are not nearly so different as this class shows, but those voices are nowhere to be seen. Dr. Lloyd-Moffett repeatedly claims that we will look at all the arguments, but his class is basically a look at skeptical or progressive interpretations of Jesus, with few and heavily downplayed resources in normative Christianity. Some may say that as a Christian, I'm upset by attacks against my understanding of Jesus. I am not at all perturbed by these; instead, my qualm is with the biased resources that are given as the backdrop for understanding the historical Jesus.

I must have been in the same section as the reviewer below me, because I vividly remember SLM saying that quote… but I don't necessarily think you should run based solely on that. He does warn you that his tests are hard from day 1, but you really have no idea until you actually take a test. I completely bombed the midterm (earning a D) and I know many others did as well, but honestly this was my own fault for not dedicating enough time to study for it. The questions are just really esoteric and you wouldn't know the answers unless you studied every item on the review sheet. The fact that most questions have either "both A & B," "all of the above," or "none of the above" as a possible answer just make it that much harder even if you actually do know about the subject. Since I knew what to expect for the final, I made sure I went over every term multiple times. Needless to say, it worked because I ended up with a B- for my grade. I definitely did more studying for this class than any other class I took that quarter, including my major courses. Despite the harsh grading, however, SLM is a tremendously knowledgeable, compassionate, and chill professor. I mean, this guy has traveled all over India essentially as a religious vagabond and has participated in meditations that required 3 hours of laughing, 3 hours of crying, and 3 hours of silence. His shocking and/or hilarious life stories are the highlight of his lectures. He'll be quick to deny any lazy student requests, because he's a completely reasonable person who's been through a lot in his life and on top of that he provides every studying material you could possibly ask for. The extra credit for the class was to attend a $10 buffet dinner at Shalimar, watch a movie, and write a 1-page response. Easy-peasy AND delicious! As for the projects, the first was to make a travel itinerary for a trip to India (which was rather tedious), the second was to attend a Buddhist group session (which was pretty cool), and the last was to either do feng shui and report its effects or to take a tai chi class (I did feng shui and loved the results). All in all, I'm really glad I took this class and gained some worldly perspectives, but the work definitely felt like hell at some points. I would say to those considering this class: take it if your other prospective classes aren't very demanding!! You'll learn a lot!! But if all your other classes are just as demanding, then taking this class just may overwhelm you - and nobody would want that!!!

Love Professor Moffett for his class and his field trips. If you take a class with him, you shall learn to ways of monotheism, and from it you will learn that this class has no bias in religion except wanting to let the facts rather than ignorance guide individuals. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism were the three topic I would recommend any engineering student to take if they have time. Also, be sure to handle Moffett's bare feet because he will be barefoot in the room at least once a week.

I had Lord Muffin for RELS 205, RELS 302, and will have him for RELS 310 in the Fall. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the classes I have had with him. He is extremely knowledgeable about his subjects and does a great job presenting all sides of an argument without being biased towards one or another. For the review below me: I actually know some extra details for that case that the student failed to share. It's true that the student had a 89% and Lord Muffin wouldn't bump it up. However, that's because through the numerous extra credits offered, Professor Lloyd-Moffett had already bumped their grade from a B- to the B+ they received. He's not unreasonable, and he is really nice. Be warned though, the classes are no joke. You will work your ass of for your grade. But, the material is extremely interesting and Professor Lloyd-Moffett gives a detailed study guide of exactly what will be on each test. There are no surprises, you just have to actually learn what he teaches you. I highly recommend any class taught by him.

Let me just start by noting that this is the first time I have wrote a review of a professor in 3 years. However I felt obligated to warn people about how difficult this class is. This class has an obscene amount of work for a GE. I enjoy taking challenging classes and am a very hard working student but when a GE is far more demanding than most upper division major classes it crosses a line. Furthermore, no matter how hard you work it's nearly impossible to get an A from this professor unless you are one of his cherished religious studies majors. The professor assigns a paper in which you are supposed to define Hinduism at the conclusion of the course. The problem is that this is literally an impossible task according to many papers I read from the Harvard review theology department. After many all-nighters I managed to receive one of the only A's on this paper and the rigorous final exam. Yet conveniently I ended the class with a 89.7 which the professor refused to round to an A-. This professor has the largest ego I have ever witnessed. He loves to talk about himself in class and is obviously delusional when it comes to recognizing that students have other classes to work on other than a Hinduism GE. It is really too bad that this class is taught by such a narcissistic and outrageously demanding professor because Hinduism really is quite an interesting subject.

Lloyd-Moffett is a cool guy who knows a lot about what he teaches. Just flat-out, though, he gives a lot of work for a GE. However, this IS an upper-div class, and so I should not have been surprised as a second-year trying to just breeze through the class. He presents really interesting material, though often breaks for his own side-commentary, through which his own opinions start to become very clear. He acknowledges this, though, and at the beginning of the class gives disclaimers about much of the material being what he himself deems important (so it would obviously be very different, were another person teaching it). He has a few short papers, which require some odd things of you, though I won't spoil it. Just know that his final paper does require a BIG commitment of you (you must go on your own sort of field trip), though it can be very eye-opening. Overall, SLM can be a bit difficult, but if you're an open-minded person, you will have some very different perspectives on religion (as an atheist, I certainly did). Very interesting class, worth it if you're willing to put in the work.

Yeah, I'm 4+1 and I took this class expecting either Billy Graham or Christopher Hitchens as an instructor. I was worried that I would have to listen to an indoctrination, one way or another. Turns out I was wrong. In fact, this course is one of my all-time favorites at Poly. Steve is a terrific prof, really an outstanding lecturer and the homework assignments were always relevant and interesting. The class covers three different monotheistic religions, and there are basically three assignments--as I recall, for one you have to go to a religious service of one of the faiths, for another you have to evaluate some media articles, and for another you have to look really closely at a religion's sacred text and write essays on how that religion allows (or disallows) violence. You did get to choose which religion you wanted to do each assignment on, which was nice. It is work-intensive, but Lloyd-Moffett is a Teacher Who Cares (it's a cliche, but he does) and if you put some effort into the class, you will get a lot out. I'm going to try to take another course from him before I graduate.

So this class was no breeze but awesome. I wasn't sure what to expect from a religious class, I was kind of expecting someone to be up in front telling us why they thought we would burn in hell if we sin or something of that nature but professor lloyd moffett was awesome. He is totally impartial and has a thorough understanding of the material and explains various religions from many point of views. His class is hard, there is A LOT!! of note taking and his tests all require blue books, sometimes two, as well as writing a few articles but it is worth it. SLM may be one of the most diversely intelligent men on campus. His lectures are completely straightforward & captivating, and yet throw the more information at you than you've ever experienced in your life. During the quarter, you will want to cry and burn all of your notebooks because the midterm, final paper, and final will make you want to tear your hair our. However, the information needed is all given to you on a study guide beforehand. But don't be fooled, because it's really just an overview bulletpoint sheet of every topic he's covered through the quarter. Now that the quarter is over and I never have to write 2 Big Blue Books for an exam again, I can say that the class was completely and totally worth it. SLM is an interesting guy in his own, the kind of guy you want to be friends with and hang out with outside of class. ------------------------------------TL;DR - awesome class, ridiculous amount of work, worth it.

Lloyd Moffet is crazy. I really liked the class- it was totally interesting, but his methods of evaluating are not the best. I feel like I know everything about everything, but I'm currently getting a C. He has these weird papers that are only a few pages long, but there's a 15 page guide for how to write it! Overall, the class was really interesting and Moffet is entertaining. I don't recommend it if you want to keep a high GPA- it'll kill it. Take one of his other classes- I hear they are much easier. Or take it credit no credit. I wish I had done that. Overall a good class though.

Lord Muffin is a very fast-paced lecturer. I had him for Christianity and got a lot out of the class. I didn't find RELS 310 as difficult as my classmates, but that's only because of my background. Whether you take this class with a strong background in early Christianity or are totally new to the subject, here are some IMPORTANT TIPS: write down everything. He tests on terms, through multiple choice questions or written responses. Be prepared to not only know how something is defined, but where it came from, its impact, and the people involved. He will give you a numbered list of details for each idea/person/group/event; WRITE THESE DOWN! They are his checkpoints for essays. During the class you are asked to go on site visits to a Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox church. Write down EVERYTHING you experience/hear/see/feel and then organize it in a short report EXACTLY in the order of the checklist he gives you. Include 1-5 details for each part of each question (some require more details). If you are confused about anything that goes on in a church, ask the pastor/priest for clarification. Start the essay early, follow the checklist and you should get an A on it. Make sure your arguments make sense and don't cancel each other out. Never just sit through a lecture; your eyes will glaze over. Take notes constantly. Don't ask too many questions. A one-minute break really means a one-minute break, so don't go to the bathroom unless it's longer. Bring water, and if it's at night, a jacket. Do the extra credit. You only get one chance for a midterm, so make the most of it, but don't study too much in advance or you'll blow your mind. Flashcards work, and so do cheat sheets. The tests are long, so take your time, cover all your bases, and sit there until he makes you leave. That's all I can think of for now.

He tries his hardest to relate the material to his students and is very good at it. He goes a little too far with the workload for a GE, but I didn\'t mind because it was relevant. The bad thing about him is his grading system. It\'s clear what to do on the syllabus, but he relies on that too much. The scheduling of assignments is jumbled. His grading scheme is hard to understand, and I can\'t seem to figure out why I got the grade I did.. o well. He\'s a good teacher, and he\'s good if you want to learn. Dr. Lloyd-Moffett is one of the best instructors Cal Poly has to offer. He is funny and relatable, and always willing to help students. Being in a completely unrelated major, I was able to take away so much from RELS 372. Weekly quizzes were difficult but I was able to balance low grades on quizzes with higher grades on written assignments. As for the material in 372, it was all really interesting and reminded students that there are other things to learn about rather than just math, science, etc. Work for this class included multiple short, opinion-based essays, one take home midterm (1 long essays, 3 short essays), one 10 page term paper, and a final (in-class essay, 80 MC scantron test). Lastly, Dr. Lloyd-Moffett also offers a fair amount of extra credit opportunities.

Where to begin.. I was really looking forward to this class. I thought it would be very interesting, and in many ways, it was. It was really cool learning about things that I would never have investigated or probably even known about. So for content, I think this is a good class. SLM is a cool guy, sure, he's great, whatever. He definitely is a little different from the norm but I respect that and admire his ability to seemingly not give a f--k what others think. Admirable. The amount he has traveled is awesome. BUT this is my issue. This class was A LOT of work. One of the most intense GE's I have taken. I really really hope I can persuade someone to not make the same mistake I did by signing up for this class. When people tell you it is a lot of work, listen, because I didn't take any polyratings seriously and majorly regret it. Let me break it down for you. 24% is mini essays/reflections. One was easy, one was much more challenging and a lot of people I know in the class did poorly, and I felt it was very subjective. I got the lowest grade I've EVER gotten on an essay in college on one of them, and writing is one of my strong points. I put a lot of time into it, and for that to still not be good enough was extremely frustrating. His prompts aren't clear cut so it's easy to miss the target. They are mostly about forming an opinion and proving it/explaining it with information from the class which isn't necessarily easy. This isn't explaining why the sky is blue, this is trying to explain why so and so might have been a crazy ascetic or whatever. I did much better on an essay I didn't think I did well on than one I put a lot of time and energy into and was much more confident about. That just doesn't seem right. The quarter long project is whatever, but realize you'll be writing at least ten pages for it, and it is due right before finals. Two exams, one of which is take home, both worth 23 and 25 percent of your grade. The final is essay, short answer and has multiple choice questions on everything this quarter, but since we haven't really taken any multiple choice tests from him before, no one has any clue how this will be. He gave us a double sided study guide with terms/concepts/people and nothing else. And also warned us that it would be hard. So that's cool. This class is almost entirely based on essays, which is brutal since its really difficult to know exactly what he is looking for. Sure, there are some people in this class who are RELS minors or whatever, but most of the people I talked to in this class thought it was way too difficult for a GE. The only cushion you have is 12% participation, which is easy to get if you A. go to class (literally every single class, if you miss more than one, your attendance part of the participation grade is cut in half (so 3% to 1.5%, miss another it drops to 0%). He doesn't even consider funerals an excuse. Taking weekly reading quizzes on dry readings, 3%. In class participation, 3%. Discussion board, 3%. I just want to to emphasize that if you are looking for an easy class, look elsewhere. It seems like a cool class, I know, I thought it would be. But when you are most worried about this final in comparison to your other classes (which let me add are not easy classes, nor do I expect college to be a walk in the park. I don't mind working, it's just an excessive amount for a GE.) than something is wrong. If this class had things beyond essays, that would be a step in the right direction.

SLM is the best professor at Poly hands down. A good professor is one that challenges you and enriches your life! His assignments and tests were not easy, but his classes are so valuable to take! I took two of his classes last quarter at the same time which was definitely stupid of me but in the end I actually got decent grades! I turned in a paper a day or two late after I came into his office hours after it was due to ask for help. He was really understanding and was glad that I came to see him because the prompt was difficult. He didn't really penalize me because I think it showed that I cared about the assignment too much to turn in a piece of crap. Advice: Don't procrastinate on anything! He grades things pretty hard, which is preferable in my opinion because so many professors give out As for lousy work. His life stories are what made class so great. He really did his best to make every lecture fun and interesting. If you like religion and spirituality, take him! His tests were difficult but definitely do-able in my opinion. They are comparable to an AP history test in high school! I plan on taking as many classes next year with him as I can!

Long time no see, PolyRatings! I'm here because I was searching the web today for for one of SLM's class websites so I could get some recommended reading on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. I graduated from Cal Poly in 2011, earned a religious studies minor and probably took about 7-8 of SLM's classes. I thought I'd check out PolyRatings for old time's sake (post grad nostalgia is a curious beast - don't judge me until you get here). I've read some comments about how his classes are hard and some people are suggesting that you NOT take them because they are hard... I urge you to seriously consider why you're spending the best years of your life in school and costing you or someone else thousands and thousands of dollars if you are uninterested in personal and intellectual growth. SLM's classes were tough in terms of retention of material, but it is the knowledge of that material that gives you a richness in understanding other cultures and systems of belief - an inexplicably important education to have today. So take the time to make yourself relevant. Grow up, learn how to manage your time. Study a little every week of the quarter not just for 8 hours before the final (and you wonder why you don't get a passing grade). I got more Bs than As in his classes but I am better for taking them. Take it from someone out in the real world - finding the path of the least difficulty will not only leave you unfulfilled, others recognize it and have no respect for your weak sense of self worth. Something being too challenging is a sorry excuse and I feel badly for those of you that go through your education thinking that way. Take care, PolyRatings! Until next time, I hope then I won't leave shaking my head.

As you've probably heard SLM is a great prof with a whole lot of wisdom to share. This class is where his wisdom really shines, in my opinion. Definitely one of the coolest, most unique classes I've ever taken and will ever take. however, be warned it is a ton of work for a GE. Its all very much worth it in my opinion, but don't think this is gonna be some BS GE you can float through. If you do take the class here's my advice: start studying for the tests at least 5 days before, go to his office hours because he will like to see your efforts in the class, make sure you ask questions and participate in class. good luck and don't wish it away

Despite all the positive feedback from Dr. Lloyd-Moffett on polyratings already, most of these people fail to realize how he pushes an agenda and he pushes it hard. In my Israeli-palestinian conflict class it didnt help his objective arguments when he said his best friend is a Muslim (I dont have anything against Islam, yet when a class like I-P conflict has so much religiosity attached to it, it's detrimental to his credibility as a teacher presenting both sides to a conflict, as it helps illustrate where his sympathies lie). Bottom line, this guy is ... one-sided ... who hates on Israel

My second time on the Lloyd-Moffett cycle, and he's just terrific. Engaging lecturer, well-informed, the whole deal. Kind of a hardass on grading, but oh well. The class was on the Israel-Palestine Conflict, and it was a fairly breezy class that I enjoyed going to during my last quarter at Poly. I highly recommend you take the class if you've got an elective spot.

It truly is a sad day when the student fails to take away the key concept of the class. The fundamental purpose of this class is to understand that the conflict cannot be reduced to one sided narrative. The idiot who commented before me obviously could not comprehend this core idea. Coming into the class, I was very anti-Israel (a viewpoint opposite the person below me). That being said, both of the professors (Lloyd-Moffett and Leithner) were judicious in maintaining the middle ground. They presented arguments for both sides of the conflict and defended Israeli actions that I did not believe deserved defense(again, my bias). Overall, I cannot imagine the class being structured any better. I\'ve certainly taken a more balanced perspective, and can now see some of the reasoning behind Israeli leaders.

Lloyd-Moffett rambles on so much that I seriously think he loves to hear his own voice. At first, I thought he was funny and made class interesting, until students started asking questions. I know this is a class and students are supposed to ask questions when they need something clarified, but don't ask him questions! He will see your hand raised, sigh really loudly, shrug his shoulders and act like you are totally infringing on his groove. I'm sorry professor but this is apart of academia! Also, he co-taught this class with Dr. Leithner and she is so informative and clear when talking about the politics in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but he blatantly disrespects her in front of the class. On numerous occasions she would be lecturing on political theory and he would interrupt her and say how he disagreed, blah blah blah. Hey Dr. Lloyd-Moffett, is your PhD in Political Science? Right, I didn't think so. So let the woman speak! She would never interrupt him and he is honestly just such a rude person and so full of himself. He takes a really interesting subject and makes you not want to come to class so you wouldn't have to see him act like a self-absorbed princess.
