Ed is a super great guy to have for a quarter in studio. This was my first quarter in studio and he was great to have as a first quarter professor. He's super quirky, funny, interesting, nice and brings his dog in. He doesn't assign as much homework as other studio professors and values your design ideas above amount of ideas, so quality over quantity. I.e. if there's a three cube homework assignment and you bring two solid designed cubes, he will not penalize you. The grade is largely based on the design and hardly has anything to do with whether you did every homework assignment or not. That being said, don't procrastinate, do your work to the best of your ability, but if it's 3 am and you're tired, just sleep (unless its a hard project deadline the next day). Although, he does require in class participation, this means talking about the readings and actively participating in critically reviewing your peers' work. Ed fosters a great studio culture and I met some of my best friends in his class. He really makes sure you socialize and meet people and act as a family unit. We had secret santa and a potluck, he loves to sing so if it's your birthday get ready. His grading is easy and he's super approachable and gives one on one help with designs. I would definitely recommend taking him for a quarter if you need to ease off the time you spend in studio. Although, on the downside, because he is ARCE, he is not the best at evaluating student work in regard to design, what I mean is, sometimes his ARCE intuition guides his suggestions for designs and so the work in Ed's studio is definitely recognizable as influenced by ARCE more than architecture. But, this puts a great spin on studio because he emphasizes structure and you get a new perspective on how to design things to stand up. Sometimes he is unable to empathize with student concerns and stresses and mental health but he means well so if he offends you, it's from a place of love so try to take it in stride, he means well but sometimes it's hard for him to understand teenagers. Learning drawing is somewhat difficult in his class so be ready to talk to your peers and other professors, if you need extra help though, he is more than willing to help you one on one. He is always available and answers emails promptly. Overall it was a great first quarter of studio and I would definitely recommend taking his studio.

I love Ed, He gives off good vibes, is super chill and understanding, and you can tell that he cares about each of his students. Ed will give you a good grade if you put a significant amount of time and effort into your work which I appreciate. Also he sometimes brings his dog, Frank Sinatra, in to class which is always fun. You can tell very easily however that he is an Architectural Engineering Professor and not particularly a studio professor, He looks for his students designs to be practical, functional, and relatively down to earth. In terms of assigning material, Ed's unique assignments will primarily consist of load flow diagrams, the rest are usually along the lines of what other studios are doing, just not as much extraneous work in comparison.

Dude was horrible..... I think he has no idea what is going on with structures. Feel free to send him back to where he came from.

Rude, he told me to switch majors. why not help students out when they are struggling as oppose to telling them to quit? he had enough nerve to try to tell me what to do with my life, and thats not something i want to hear from a professor when i go into office hours. i was obviously just looking for help.

I took Ed for ARCE 223, which had a lecture and a lab. Ed is really good at theory, and OK at the practical. He goes at a fast pace and writes alot for notes, but they really help. The HW he assigns does take some time, but his tests and quizzes are fair, and never more challenging then the hardest hw problem. During his office hours, he was clear and concise, Ed really knows his mechanics. The lab write-ups are long, and he docked lots of points, but its good practice for other labs. The course is not easy, but with studying and hw, the subject matter gets easier as the course goes on.

I only just started taking Prof Saliklis class this winter quarter of 06. It may be kind of early to evaluate him, but I think it is safe to say he is one of the coolest teachers here at Cal Poly. This guy is hilarious too, he tries to make the class seem fun and he puts in a lot of effort in trying to make us understand the course. If he goes a little to fast for anyone, just go to office hours and he'll explain the stuff better. You definitely have to put effort into trying to understand the material as well, don't rely on the prof...he's only there to guide you and sometimes make you laugh. Aight peace out.

Ed is a great teacher. He is tough, but by the end of the course I really feel like I comprehend the material. His assignments are a little tougher than other teachers might give you, but overall I feel it is worth it to take him. I have had him for both 223 and 225 and he gave 2 midterms and a final. Both times the first midterm was hard, but the second was a cake walk and the final was somewhere in the middle. Overall I really recommend taking him.

He told me to switch majors too, but in all my other ARCE classes I have done fine. Dynamics sucks as it is but he makes it harder than it should be. I left office hours crying a few times, so make sure you know everything about Dynamics before you take it from him. He can sing tho.

Saliklis LOVES calling people out. If you yawn, he will call you out and make you answer a question pertaining to the lecture. If you ask a question, he'll answer the question and then right after make you answer something else about the lecture. HE makes you individually write in notebooks and walks around calling you out if you put the wrong answer down. By the end of the quarter, you never want to ask questions and are scared that if you write the wrong thing down he'll ridicule you in front of the whole class. The midterms are really straightforward and follow the lecture perfectly and then the final is really hard! So prepare yourself for that final.

This guy is the shittiest structures professor I have ever had. Not only are his lectures pointless and boring, but he doesn't explain anything throughout the entire lecture. For every homework packet we have been given, there is not a single equation in the entire 10+ page booklet and his descriptions of what is going on within the loading of the building contains more jokes and random facts than relevant information. I have spent the last 3 hours trying to google search the correct equation for my current homework because he never told us any of the equations to this new material and I haven't come any closer to figuring out how to do this assignment. By the way, his monotone voice sounds like that of the Rain Man... so at least hes funny to listen to

Ed is a great professor. He is passionate about the subject and knows a lot about architectural engineering. His lectures are very informative and the homework is very fair. Test are pretty easy as long as you've been paying attention in class. He's a really fun teacher to have and I highly recommend if you are looking for a GE to take ARCE 260 with him. For non-engineers he will really open your eyes to a lot of amazing structures around the world.

I wish I had taken another course for the C elective. Heavily based on technicalities which was hard for me to understand, being a non-engineer. This course SHOULD have had prereq's for it because I felt lost. Half of the class was engineers so his lecture geared towards them. Somehow expects you to come up with social and symbolic critiques although he never speaks about it in the class, except for the first lecture. Hard grader on writing assignments (even with formatting). Posts lecture notes AFTER the class, making his actual lecture hard to follow. Sometimes speeds through critical information and spends more time telling completely irrelevant stories not on the exams. Bottom line: I would not recommend him to non-engineers. If you have no other choice, take it cr/nc and hope for the best.

Week 1 started great with non graded review sheet at the beginning of class, helped me understand what would be on the quizzes. Week 2 gone, shifted into him just talking verbatim from the notes he posts after class. Week 3 I realized that not having the pages of notes or questions in an accessible format is really hurting my ability to make my own notes in class. week 4 he tells us he has 8 graders and half are behind schedule. week 5 I finally get my HW 1-6 back and realize im failing, yay! week 6 "study thin shell to goldsmith for the exam...great...what exactly." week 7 getting all A's on HW now but getting ripped by his exams and quizzed and writing prompts. YOU CAN FIND A DIFFERENT ELECTIVE, THIS GUY IS A BAD NON ENGINEERING TEACHER.

Great class and great professor. Really changed my perspective on a lot of building and design ideas. His passion is contagious. I wish I could take another coarse with him. By far the best/ most powerful GE i have ever taken.

Professor Saliklis was one of my favorite professors I've had here at Cal Poly so far. Coming into the class, I was a little worried, as he had overall negative reviews on polyratings. However, by the end of the first class I knew that y'all were wrong. Saliklis is an extremely likable guy- he's entertaining, friendly, funny, and yet still teaches the material very well. As a non-engineering or architecture student, I was skeptical that I would be able to understand the technical aspects of the course, but Saliklis dealt with this fear early on. He made sure to only include technical aspects in his lesson that he knew we would be able to understand, and made sure to describe these aspects using easy-to-understand metaphors and imagery, that way we were all on the same page. If anyone didn't understand something the first time, he would go over the topic again, and make sure everyone understood. His homework assignments and exams were very fair- he only tested on material he went over during lecture. All you had to do was pay attention and take good notes, and you were guaranteed a good grade. If anyone is thinking of taking his ARCE 260 class, I'd highly recommend it. It's an easy and enjoyable A!

I want to start off by mentioning professor Saliklis' passion for the class and the material. To me personally, this is a huge upside to any class. The material of this class was not necessarily relevant to me or my major, but with any GE having a professor that actually cares about the class and the students is very hard to find. I had a similar class at the same time as this one, similar length and starting time, and the material was actually more relevant to my major/interests. However, because the professor for that class was so f**king boring and he didn't care at all I found myself watching other students struggle to stay awake for enjoyment. Most days however it was me that was also struggling to depict something along the lines of listening. My point here is that no one is going to be crazy enthused about taking any GEs, and having a passionate professor can make or break a class. To be clear, this class was 50% attendance-based. You had to answer two questions based on that day's material and hand it in on a sheet at the end of class which was very easy. The tests were moderately difficult, but the projects and two short (1-2pg) papers were easy to write and softly-graded. I suggest you take this class. At worst it's just another GE and you'll get through a quarter of it and come out with a decent grade. At best, you'll actually find that you enjoy the material like me and find that you were glad you took the class (instead of MU 101- for god sakes it says 101 but you'll have to do some heavy clenching to prepare your butthole just for day one).

Professor Saliklis is passionate. This class is honestly his baby and it shows. He's spent decades creating some of these presentations, and has given them all over the world. He makes it interesting, he goes over all of the homework problems during lecture. 50% of your grade is attendance and that's because he really wants you to love the material as much as he does. Three (simple) exams and 2 "essays" make up the other 50%. Even if you're not an ARCE, take this as a GE, you won't regret it.

Professor Saliklis is a cool guy who clearly enjoys his subject, but I can't honestly say that I was as impressed as those who have rated him previously on Polyratings. Perhaps I should instead be posting this on the subreddit r/unpopularopinions, but whatever... YOU DON'T NEED THE FRIGGIN TEXTBOOK, so don't waste your money! I'm not an architecture student, and I'm glad that he was able to make the course material understandable to everyone, but I feel that much of the course was useless and dull. We wrote two essays, one of which was a technical, social, and symbolic critique of some random building from the textbook, and the other essay was pretty much the same kind of essay, but it had to be about the Architecture Graveyard. Each is 1.5-2 pages. Just write some sappy nonsense about the Architecture Graveyard representing lost dreams or something.... It's super easy to get full credit on the essays, and if you fill out the weekly worksheets WHICH CONTAIN EVERYTHING ON MIDTERMS AND FINAL and make flashcards you should be fine. MOST ANSWERS ARE ON QUIZLET, just search "arce 260 midterm #1, #2, final, etc". Weekly homework assignments are easy, and each are worth about 1.5% of your grade, which adds up quickly, so do not skip them if you want an A.

In 316 he choose to put a emphasis on ARCE history. You're either going to love this class or hate it. Some people were bored to sleep and he doesn't mind too much, but he often points out that you will bomb the final if you sleep during class. The final is all arce history There are two midterms, typical arce, all problems. The first one about 1/3 of the class aced. The second one was a little harder he bumped all what grades up 10% some people got 110% others others got about 50% though. I think I missed about 7 points total on all the homeworks out of maybe 200. Overall I thought this class was really interesting, I learned about a lot of interesting structural patterns that can be used and such. It's also easy to enjoy this class when you have the opportunity to be successful and not frustrated. I feel that is the deciding factor in whether on not people like or hate arce. and with teacher you can enjoy arce

Ed barely understands the material himself. He's funny in class, but far from a good teacher.
