Anne Regan is the best english teacher i have ever had. I was struggling to find my voice in writing, and she taught me how to find it. Now my writing doesn't sound like a bs AP paper. Take her. She is absolutely my favorite teacher at Cal Poly so far. She challenges you to become a better writer. she has a weird grading system, but she doesn't want the average student to focus on grades, just improving.

nice woman. fair and helpful. my criticisms would be that she wastes a lot of time responding to the idiots in the class instead of just telling them to shut the hell up. also, she doesn't take much time grading your essays. if you are pretty good at english, this class probably won't teach you anything you don't already know. it's a freshman intro class, and it seems like it's designed for people who are a step above illiteracy. i don't get anything out of it, but every student is different. if you are not so good at english or kind of a dumbass, you may learn things since the class goes over a lot of really basic stuff. but if you are proficient in writing and would like to improve your skill, I would suggest taking a more intensive course if you can.

Ms. Regan is definitely a good teacher, she is very clear about what she wants, she grades fairly, and offers rewrites on two of the three major essays. My only problems with her is that she spends a lot of time on writing techniques that we all already knew about, and requires attendance to her classes. This is also contradicted by her telling us to act like college students and not high school kids (yet she makes us goto class). All in all i would recommend her.

LOVED Anne. She was so so helpful outside the class - she really helped me build a strong a resume for a job I was actually applying for during the quarter and was always more than willing to offer advice on careers, school, life... such a nice woman. Proof read your papers, have relevant things to say, and get a good group for the group project because that's like, ALL this class is.

This class is pretty easy. It consists of writing a resume/cover letter, a 3-5 page research paper, and a group project which I worked on probably a total of an hour outside of class. The second half of every wednesday is devoted to working on the group project. Attendance is necessary because she sometimes takes points off and there is a good amount of in class writing. There were quizzes every so often on the reading, which were pretty much common sense. There are a lot of free points if you go to class and she is a very fair grader who cares much more about structure than content. she is very nice and I WOULD RECCOMEND taking this class.

She's really nice and her class is really easy!! If you need to fulfill an A3, TAKE THIS CLASS. The whole class is basically a group project where you work to create a Wiki page describing a social media website. Make sure you become friends with people you like in the class within the first couple days of class so you can have a good group. You're gonna want a good group because you're stuck with them for the whole quarter. You also have a few in class writings and quizzes, but they're not too bad. There's also one short paper you have to write. I definitely recommend this class!!!

Do not take this class. English is my best subject and I'm getting a C in this class. She talks to you like you're in elementary school, doesn't explain things well, and grades very hard. The essays she gave us had 4 passing grades. All you do is create a Wiki page (very annoying formatting and I hate the wiki style in general) and work in a group on your final project.

Anne is really a great teacher that knows what she is talking about. She has worked as a technical writer and shows us what details we have to put into our writing to make it as clear as possible to the consumer. Although there is quite a lot of reading to do, most of it does give you plenty of examples of what happens when writing succeeds or fails. I recommend taking Anne, as she is very friendly and wants you to succeed.

Regan keeps it real. She's genuine, kind lady, who really doesn't need to teach, but does because she enjoys it. She works as a technical writer and knows a lot about engineering firms and technology because she writes documents and manuals for these companies. There's no final or Midterm (awesome!) instead a big group project in which you technically write a document and the stuff that goes with it (which could be GREAT for the resume). She has a resume project too in which she teaches you how to write a good resume, cover less, letter of inquiry etc. It's really practical, useful work. Not just shitty assignments that you BS the night before, but projects that will go to use.

Regan is a very likable woman who has experience doing just about everything. Classes are laid back and evaluations are objective and very generously graded. Her real skill is in sharing her experience, so it's really important to ask her if you have any questions, especially regarding the quarter-long project which accounts for 35% of your grade. I feel this class is very practical; the big project forces you to work on something that makes a difference outside the classroom. Also, the class is not focused so much on learning new things as much as it is practicing what you already know. That means if you're a good writer, you'll have no problem. If you have difficulty, you'll get a chance to improve. I only wish she gave more written feedback on papers. All things considered, I recommend her.

TAKE HER!!! All of my friends were complaining about their tech writing classes but honestly I thought that this was my easiest class of that quarter. She is very understanding. I was sick for a while and missed a lot of class, but she let me give my presentation a couple weeks late and still gave me full credit for it. There was barely any homework, most of it was just to read pages in the book to prepare for the quizzes. Her quizzes are super easy. She\'ll sometimes let us use notes or work with a partner. Also, there\'s a group project that you work on most of the quarter and no final!

i had two major problems with Regan. One is that she doesn\'t grade on content. And she doesn\'t tell you that she doesn\'t grade on content. If your paper is a perfect MLA format you\'ll get a hundo. Once i had a memo to turn in that was out of 50 points. She didnt mark a single thing down for my content, but i was missing 3 semicolons, and didnt indent in one part and she marked me down to a 40/50. WTF?? The second problem I have with her was that its impossible for her to present an assignment clearly. You\'d think she\'d be good with instructions, but we literally spent the entire class asking questions and clarifying the hw (which ended up just being a memo). Other than that her class i a cake walk. Shes chill with you missing days, make up assignments etc. the iFixit project sounds tough, but its pretty easy. Take good pictures and be thorough with the device page, cuz if you have to start over its a bitch.

Definitely take her. Only three projects that counts for the majority of the grade and it really isn\'t that bad. A resume and memo, ifixit project, and a concept paper where you would have to do a presentation on. The key to getting an A in this class is to proofread your work as much as you can and find good teammates to work with. She did start the quarter with one or two quizzes based on the reading, so the text isn\'t really required. Easiest class I\'ve ever taken so far.

I took Anne during the Spring Quarter of 2009 last year as a freshman. She was an awesome teacher and knows that us engineers are stressed and need a break. Just read the stuff she tells you to do and do the Group Project at the end following the directions...you are pretty much guaranteed an A given you do all the work. She is very laid back and is more than happy to help you if you are confused. Others will say that she\'s a shitty teacher and the class is B.S. Although an easy class you will gain tips as to how to write a proper resume, cover letter and technical document: All of which are important skills to have as an engineer. Take Regan

She is a wonderful professor. It\'s pretty simple/easy for a tech writing class. I barely focused on this class and I was able to pull off an A-. The group project counts a lot for your grade so if you really want a good grade, do well on that. My grade for the group project wasnt as good as others but without the group project I had a 95%. The individual assignments were really easy. The resume/cover letter is worth twice as much as our concept paper. The resume/cover only took me two hours to do and I got a perfect. Take her especially if your other classes will take a lot of your time.

Dr. Regan is a good professor to take for 149. Although the class was easy, I still had a lot of fun in it. Our main project was to write a repair manual for a device. It was easy, but we wanted to do a good job because our writing was going to be displayed on a website. We learned to target our technical writing for non-engineers, so I'd say the course with Dr. Regan achieves its goals.

Let me make this clear to everyone whose heard Regan is an easy teacher. She is easy, because there isn't a lot of work assigned. In total all the major work you have to do is the resume assignment, concept paper and presentation, and the iFixit/other project. That makes up the majority of your grade. But, there are also 1 or 2 quizzes, both on PolyLearn and in class, on the book and online assignments on PolyLearn. She doesn't go over this stuff in class and expects us to understand it. That's all the work there is. But for all of those assignments she grades very tough, and she's very vague with her comments on the assignments. Basically to get an A on any assignment and to get an A in the class, FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS PERFECTLY, USE CORRECT FORMATTING, STRUCTURE, AND GRAMMAR. She will dock a lot of points if these aren't perfect. Also, put a lot of effort into the concept essay and the group project and you should do fine. And don't do iFixit if you can; it will make your life a lot easier. Overall, not a lot of work but a very tough grader, so don't think you can breeze through and expect to get an A.

Professor Regan is a fine professor. Her lectures are fine and the assignments are interesting. About a third of the classes are independent study. This is because the majority of the work for the class revolves around writing a repair guide for a device for iFixit. Groups had to coordinate with iFixit and the Professor and some of the details were a little fuzzy. Make sure you keep to her formatting instructions and keep up with the iFixit project and you will be fine.

She has good and bad moods so sometimes she is a little annoying but the coursework was generally pretty easy. I failed every quiz and still got an A so you don't really have to do all the reading she tells you to do. This is a ridiculously easy class. Regan is somewhat of a pushover too. The quizzes are kind of annoying and you shouldn't even study for them because they aren't based on the reading even though she claims they are. The reviews on this page have already covered it all. Basically, Professor Regan for the most part is a nice person with a keen sense of humor, but there are days where she is the polar opposite and has a short temper. It's not too bad. All the work is really based on formatting. Quizzes and the short final weren't really from the book and were more common sense/from her lecture. iFixit is the big thing. It is not too bad but it will all but determine your grade. Take her for a light workload and ability to cruise (kind of).

Prof Regan is probably the easiest teacher for ENG 149. The class had very little work, just a few random assignments, an iFixit project and a five page paper. Most of your grade comes from the ifixit project, so make sure you get a good group at the beginning of the year. Getting a high B/low A is pretty much guaranteed. She was a good professor for this class. If what she says is true, she probably shouldn't have taught this quarter because she had so many other commitments. But she handled them decently. To be honest I don't think I learned anything in this class, but it's probably the class and not the teacher. She regularly canceled class, which was about every other week or so. We had one big essay, one small one, the Ifixit project, and a few small easy assignments. Ifixit was way easier than I thought it was going to be. My group spent about 4 hours on the project outside of class and got a B on it. The one quiz and the final were actually hard but not worth many points. I'm glad I'm done with English now. Regan is by far the most unclear professor I have ever had. I never knew when or what was due, which was often a problem. She's not the most intelligent human especially when it comes to teaching a class for engineers. She also will not bump any grades up. You don't really do much in this class or learn much. Regan is unbelievably incompetent with this subject matter. She doesn't understand how to convey material to her students and often takes long pauses in her sentences and awkwardly laughs at things that are not funny. What she gets through in the hour long classes could have been taught in all of 10 minutes making most days a complete waste of time. She also likes to write all of one very unhelpful word on the chalkboard that we can't even read probably just because she likes to write on the chalkboard and not for the purpose of our education. She doesn't grade too harshly but she refused to give me credit for something that i turned in simply because i didn't go to her office hours to talk about it. The quizzes and finals seemed like questions she pulled out of the book(which was rather useless) and made up illiterate sentences that don't make sense as options. I wish I would have actually learned how to right a cover letter or what to put on my resume but the one day that she spent going over these things were unhelpful as she wasn't even sure about them and seemed very wishy washy about the whole thing. For any of the projects, there were no instructions or deadlines for anything and she seemed to expect us to know what we were doing. No i didn't spend a whole lot of time on this class and it was an easy B but this class could have been just as easy and I could have actually learned something if she was competent in any way at all. So i do not recommend taking her, as i did not learn a single thing and you will be tested on things that she did not teach.

Unlike some of the recent reviewers, I found Professor Regan to be helpful. The course may be more work when compared to other ENGL 149 classes, but I thought it was worth it. I put in good faith effort into my assignments and they naturally earned me an A. My one gripe is the final. It was a 25 multiple choice exam that covered some material we did not go over in class. Besides that, if you're looking for an approachable professor who cares for her students, I recommend this professor.

I chose Regan because I thought she would be the easiest professor for a BS class, but she consistently made the course frustrating. Even though the work is definitely easy, she was so unorganized that we never even knew when assignments were due and then she would get angry with us for not being prepared. She also doesn't actually teach you anything in lecture. One class she spent 50 minutes straight going through a long explanation of the Cal Poly salary system and complaining how she deserves to make more money. Obviously students just stopped going to lecture, but then she got upset about that as well. She added a last minute class assignment on a day where few students were present, didn't include it on the polylearn schedule on purpose, and made it worth more than our final to punish people who didn't attend. Of course, this was the only class I missed (actually in the hospital with a chest infection), and when I talked to her about the assignment, she said directly to my face that my "concerns were a waste of her time." I was actually shocked, even with all that she had already done up to this point. Missing that one day dropped my grade from an A to a low B. After taking this course, I honestly wish I rather took a harder teacher that at least had his/her curriculum together. Overall, Regan was ineffective, unorganized, extremely unproffesional, and I'm ashamed of the cal poly administration for hiring someone like this.

I wouldn't say she is the worst professor, but unlike many reviews here, her classes isn't that easy in my experience. You'll have to get very good on proofreading especially with grammar because she marks down a lot of points if your mechanics are bad. You also have to be top notch on formatting as well. Tech writing should only be a challenging course for students who need to improve their technical writing skill. Professor Regan, on the other hand, makes this class pointlessly hard to get an A in, simply because she is an unreasonable person. In lecture, she comes across as nice and helpful, but in the end she has extremely high, specific expectations for each assignment that she in no way clarified beforehand. She will explain an assignment, you will think you understand the rubric reasonably well, and then she will knock your submission down 2 letter grades for something extremely nitpicky and completely separate from someone's skill as a technical writer. And oh my god she ruined the potential usefulness of this class with MEMOS. This lady is OBSESSED with memos. You learn in the first week how to write a memo. You'd think once we got memos down, she'd be done with it. Nope, she had us write a memo almost every single week, each time nitpicking and lowering your grade for ridiculous, not previously specified reasons. Also, her memo assignments were in no way practical, as we never wrote in workplace/industry scenarios and instead wrote with her as the audience and some fake assignment as the subject. Also, Regan has an extremely harsh and unnecessary grading scale. If you get less than the 5% mark of a letter grade, you get a minus. For example, I finished with an 84.8, which awarded me a B- for.

I honestly think this class was useful. I will use these skills in the future. It's nice to know how to write a good memo, email, report, proposal, resume etc. Regan is also a very nice lady. She is kind and helpful, and I liked her as a person. However, the grading in this class was honestly ridiculous. In our class of around 24, Regan said on the first day of class how usually only 1 or 2 people get As. It is not because the class is hard-- it is because she doesn't want engineers to think of English as "easy" in comparison to STEM, so the grading is jacked. I don't think being in any class where the grading is set up like this is remotely fair. In my opinion, it should be you competing with yourself, and if you produce exceptional work you should get an A. She took off huge portions of your grade for tiny mistakes. Additionally, we had quizzes that were not on what she said they would be. One quiz she told us would be based on the iFixit project (more on that later), but was actually on reading from maybe the 1st week of school that nobody remembered. The average was a 52% or something. It was not curved. In addition to some smaller individual assignments, we had the iFixit group project. Honestly, I really enjoyed the project itself. It was fun and cool to have a relevant project to put on a resume. The project was introduced kind of late in the quarter, and it was A LOT of work. A lot a lot. Basically took over all of our lives. So be warned, I guess. Also, you don't get to pick your group, so it really is luck if you end up with hardworking people or not. So basically. Good content. Bad grading. Take Professor Regan to pass the GWR, and learn some practical knowledge about the corporate industry. The class consists of a good amount of group (the entire class) analysis of relevant case studies, and does not have a ton of writing assignments, or reading /writing assignments. She is more than willing to work with you if you have other pressing 'things' going on, and will help with general advise for resume, cover letters, and career fair guidance. If you need to pass the GWR, and can write a basic argumentative, 6 paragraph essay, you will be set up to succeed in this class. The grading is straight forward (strictly point based). She was very practical in how she set up the workload, and did not seem care about cramming material in, due to events that come up and limit time for an assignment. Too high expectations for an elective level class. 95% for an A? Student's work must be absolutely "perfect" for an A? How can non English major students reasonably be expected to achieve such standards when Anne Regan does not teach us how to complete "perfect" work. Instead she gives us instructions she expects us to understand the same way as her and a rubric she haphazardly follows. More times than not it seems like we are set up for failure rather than given positions to succeed. Also her conversational and teaching tone and demeanor to her class comes off as arrogant and condescending when we ask questions or make comments that seem too painfully obvious for her to explain. Up until this class I have felt that all of my professors have genuinely cared for my success and learning ability, and put in their upmost effort to provide the best learning environment possible, through this reflecting the "Mustang Way", however in this class I felt none of that. She is nice as a person and seems cool at first but towards the end of the quarter, expects way too much from you and is not clear nor helpful. It seems like she gets satisfaction out of watching you fail. DO NOT TAKE HER if you do not have to !

Overall, I feel like she is nice in person, and will act like she wants to help you and allow you to succeed. But, she is such a tough grader. I got a D on a few assignments, and gives very critical feedback. It was finals week and the group report was due. No matter how hard you try on assignments and reports, she just finds anyway she can to give critical feedback and make you work harder. DON'T RECOMMEND IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GRADE!

If you want to take this class for the GWR I recommend just paying for the test instead of taking this class. It was a ridiculous amount of projects for a GE, which required we create different groups for each one so you're never able to get comfortable with a group. The instructions/rubric are completely unclear when it comes to the standards she holds for something as arbitrary as page numbering, which she expects us to just know without it being specified. The rubric just said you need your assignments to be completely perfect if you desire an A. She's way more picky about weirdly specific formatting and grammar than about content.
