Richert is just straight up boring and basically talks at you... his tests sre the worst... midterms are like 10 problems but they are like paragraph long questions with so much unneeded information that it makes it nearly impossable to figure out what he wants... take him if your willing and ready to take 2 years of Calc 1.

Dr. Richert was an enjoyable professor. His examples were goofy at times, but he loves calculus and he makes you enjoy the class. It never seemed to drag much and his wife made cookies for the class on multiple occasions. I recommend him of you want to do well in calculus and enjoy it at the same time.

I can see that if you haven't taken calculus before you really don't want to take this professor...he is a good professor and he will help you, but he really expects you to just know what is going on. I think if you don't have a background in calculus you are going to be in some trouble...

richert is an ok teacher. he can be very theortherical. His homework assignments can be challenging and they are 25% of your grade. The homework doesn't help you learn because he chooses "interesting problems" like he picks a bunch of numbers and tells you thats the hw. he had a very helping curve, i went from 55 to 70% on one of the midterms.

I have not once understood one of Richert's lessons. It is almost impossible to get through his sarcasm and cynicism. I do my absolute best not to give up, but as a student who has never taken calculus, his terse and painful lectures help in NO way at all. Somewhere there is a human being who allowed him to teach, and that is totally unacceptable. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Richert can not get over the fact that he has a PHD. He does not present calculus in a way where students who are unfamiliar to math will understand what he is saying, and he comes accross as EXTREMELY aloof or arrogant. I have problems with math as it is, and when Richert talks to the advanced students without regards to those of us who dont understand it, it is very frusttrating and detremental to my already hurting math ability. Someone please tell him that a PHD means nothing if he cant use it to help students learn.

I felt Richert was an excellent teacher. If you're simply taking the class as a GE and you don't actually want to improve on your ability in Calc don't take him. His tests are very much based on Why? concepts and being able to understand what you're doing not whether or not you know how to add. You don't have to write a novel like people are saying. If you payed attention at all you can write what he's looking for in a sentence or two here or there. I couldn't figure out how to finish a problem on a midterm, but I knew what we were suppose to do so I wrote that instead of finishing the question and he gave me full credit. There's nothing unexpected on his tests. He's funny and the class is always interesting. He goes off on tangents that come from left-field. There was a massive curve on the midterm and the homework can really help your grade since it's such a big part. Just sit down and do it. He does talk fast and write as fast as he can talk but if you fell behind in his lecture going to an office hour can get you back up to par real fast. I'd be willing to take him again for the rest of my math requirements.

Richert\'s funny as hell -- the jokes are really lame (and mostly nerdy), but he\'s the first to admit it. He\'s really into his stuff, and from time to time gets completely distrated by some abstract problem. Homework load is not too bad, and he drops the lowest score. Exams are tricky, but he uses a massive curve and gives a ton of partial credit. If you don\'t know the answer or forget an equation, you can get a lot of points by writing a paragraph saying what you meant to do or think should be done.

Richert is a funny guy and really knows his stuff. It seems that he has a tough time explaining math to people who aren't naturally good. Homework was collected, but it was like 7 problems a night. Tests were hard but he used a huge curve (55's became 70's). I would say that if you understand all of the math lingo take Richert. If you aren't good at math don't take richert, you will just be confused all the time.

First off, Richert is hilarious. He was always saying things like \"Alas!\" and \"Colored chalk is a precious national resource\" and other random things like that. He is a really funny teacher and makes the lectures interesting which is great. But the really lame thing is the ridiculous amount of homework we had to do for this class. There were assignments every day on the internet as well as a written homework assignment we had to turn in to class. He is a great guy and a good teacher but he wants everyone to become math majors and gives really hard problems to do which take FOREVER. He also teaches upper level math classes which I think makes his lower level class harder to understand, and he gives harder work. If you like doing loads of homework for the sake of taking a funny teacher who\'s pretty good, then I guess it balances out. He is really helpful at office hours if you are having trouble understanding the material.

Richert is the man! His class was by far the most challenging of my first quarter, but also the most entertaining. His style of teaching is sort of hard to get used to at first, as he is very theoretical about everything and will over explain/analyze the most simple problem and turn it into a challenge. I definitely had to work hard for my B+, but I feel as if I learned so much in his class! He is also a great person and tells the funniest jokes and stories! This guy is so great that he invited MY ENTIRE CLASS to attend Thanksgiving at his house if they didn't have anywhere to go. He told us that he had three seats open at his table and that if we emailed him he would shoot us his address for dinner. Had a blast in his class and met some great friends! Take Richert if you like cheesy math jokes, challenging material, and want to learn Calculus to the full extend. Love Richert, hopefully will be able to take him again for another math class. Prepare yourself for long tangents about how chalk boards are superior to white boards and lots of cheesy yet brilliant jokes. Richert is the man and really made me into a much better mathematician. Alas, take this class.

I took this course Fall of 2016, and I wouldn't be typing out a rating unless I was absolutely sure it wasn't me. Even though I only needed a D in Calculus I ended up retaking it again Winter quarter. If you're not used to everything written like {b∈B│there is a ∈A such that f(a)=b} and in rapid bad handwriting, then you're like me. I took AP Calculus BC in high school and got an A in the class, but this class had me freaking out. I am currently getting a B in the current Calculus 141 I am taking this quarter. I don't recommend Dr. Richert.

Takes a while to get used to his teaching style, but after that it was a good class to be in. Homework is not collected, your grade is based on comprehension of the material covered. he's the average math teacher, corny jokes, and what not. there isn't any homework collected, but i did them for my benefit. there are quizzes every week, which are literally problems straight out of the hw. he grades VERY lenient, lots of partial credit. his lectures are less of derivations, but more on examples, gets to the point of what we need to know. exams and finals were decent, usually a big curve. if you're taking this class ask him for cookies from he's wife.

Richert is a really nice guy but he just doesn't recognize student difficulties. He rambles on the whole class, writing a million words a second on the chalk board and loses the whole class and himself sometimes in the process. He gets corrected on his errors 2-3 times a class period by students. There is a quiz every friday which is usually VERY hard. He chooses the hardest problems from each section to put on the quizzes and exams. He is pretty much worthless in office hours since he doesnt have the capability to explain things on a less complex level, plus there is always a ton of upper division students in his office which he gives priority to. He is a nice guy, but its pretty simple, he cant teach.

Richert was in my opinion a very good math professor. He was always interesting and although very nerdy, an overall entertaining guy. His tests were much different than any others i've had in math (he made you extrapolate in words the process by which you solved the problem), but he always told us exactly how he wanted the problems done prior to taking the test. The test problems were just like book problems and if you work hard on the homework (which isn't more than 30 minutes a night) you can do very well in this class.

Ben Richert... or more known as B-RICH is the man. People that say that he cant add points on a test is true, but he tells you he cant add everyday. So not a problem. People that say his PHD went to his head are lying. People that say he only addresses the smarter kids are also lying. B-Rich may be the best Calculus teacher I have ever had. He is very willing to help, answers homework questions (does assign some nasty ones but he'll help you), and is a fair person. The tests are pretty tough but the curve will help. The curve has been known to change a D into a C, a C into a B and so on. The tests are very reasonable. If you are into a calculus class that will keep you awake and wanting to actually sit there, take this class. The atmosphere is easy going and please don't address him as Professor, or Doctor (because "he's over it")... B-Rich is his name. I am currently in 143 and have the same things to say.

Also, make sure to draw sharks with laser pointers on each page of the test.

All I can say is wow. There were people in my class taking Calc II their second time and still were on the verge of failing. His midterms/ final are tricky as hell. He loves using e oh btw his jokes are kinda funny at first, but by the end of the quarter you want to shoot yourself. He tends to go off-topic during lecture at least once each class and his examples aren't that great. He would do "falling off the horse" examples that are pretty much the basic example for that section but he wouldn't finish it so by the next example you would already be confused. I ended up teaching myself throughout the quarter. I guess if you work really hard you might earn yourself a B, but I suggest looking for another teacher.

Richert is pretty interesting at first, he's definitely a friendly teacher. The way he conveys the material is a little weird though and he doesn't clarify too many things. He'll ask if anyone needs for him to slow down, but no one ever raises their hand, even if they are confused. He only grades 2 midterms, a final, and homework that is handed in twice a work. Be sure to do the homework, everyone of them. I could have gotten a better grade, but I didn't turn in half the homework and I bombed the final. The midterms actually aren't too bad, but the final is pretty hard. If you go to this class, sit in the front and engage Richert in conversation before class and you will love the class, he really is a nice guy and an alright teacher. Overall, he's pretty cool, a good class.

You might feel a little overwhelmed by his teaching style in the beginning but it dies down after a while. He has no quizzes and two midterms which are fairly straightforward. Be prepared to explain everything you do in words because that's what he expects on his tests. If you don't back up your work with "english words" he won't give you full credit for the work but in the end you realize that writing everything out in words actually helped you learn the stuff better. His final was harder than his two midterms but nothing you can't deal with. His humor is a little nerdy so some like it and some don't. I personally didn't like his sense of humor but it's nothing you can't deal with. It'll take a week or two to get used to his ways but he's a good professor in the end.

Richert is an interesting guy. He talks about random things every lecture, but somehow manages to cover a lot of material. His lectures are somewhat helpful, but sometimes he skips some steps and students often stopped him for clarification on some parts. He is helpful during office hours and his grading if fair. There are two midterms and a final. The great thing about his class is that he will drop your lower midterm and replace it with the final if that will help your grade (which it did for me). Do your homework correctly and show your steps because his grader will mark you down if you don't! Homework is worth quite a bit (16%).

B-Rich is a pretty fun professor for having a math phd. His way of testing has to be adjusted to but after the first test you realize that the answers are truly unimportant to him...its the thought behind the math that he wants to see. He grades homework so if you generally do your work that is a nice cushion for your grade (16%). There are two midterms and then the final. he will replace a midterm score with the final score if you happen to bomb on of the midterms. His office hours can get crowded but that is because he takes his time helping you understand things you have questions on. I am taking him again next quarter because you can definitely learn from him. He isnt an easy A... but is a good teacher if learning is more important to you than the grade

Extremely intelligent professor. Makes class entertaining and he is very funny. His tests are a bit tricky, but he let us use a notecard of formulas. I would recommend him. If you do better on the final than one of your midterms he lets you replace the bad midterm with the final grade. Homework is collected twice a week and graded. Integration is difficult but he breaks it down very well.

Most awesome teacher ever! Dr. Richert is really entertaining in class and helpful during office hours. For our class, the homework was 25% of the grade with Webassign (yuck) being 9% and written 16%. The webassign is WAY harder than any of the test problems, but it nails down the concepts well. The written helps make sure you're doing the problems in the right format that he wants. There are 2 midterms and a final, which can replace a midterm if the grade is higher. Dr. Richert cares more about the process of doing the problem rather than if you got the right answer. He can be confusing at times, like the day he had four cups of coffee, but go to office hours if you still need help; show up early to them if it's the homework collecting day.

WOW. I strongly urge you to take Richerts course. I'm currently enrolled in his class right now and out of all the shitty classes I've taken as a first year freshman, this is hands down my favorite. He's so funny and is an awesome teacher, can be a bit overwhelming at times when he goes into a tangent, but always redirects and has multiple ways of explaining things. Quizzes are straight from the homework problems, midterms are only 6 questions but he CURVES the shit out of them. I got a 30/70 on one and it ended up being an 81%. There's never a dull moment in his class. If you pay attention and do the assigned problems, no doubt you'd get an A.

I went into Richert's class with no expectations so I wasn't extremely satisfied or disappointed. There is no doubt Richert is a hilarious guy and that he knows his stuff. He is one of the coolest professors at Cal Poly as a person. However, his teaching style didn't really click with me. I'm a very black-and white-thinker and Richert not only makes everything 'colorful' (literally, he loves to use colored chalk haha) to connect with his students, he goes off on tangents and overcomplicates things leaving me confused at the end of his lectures. He is 100% fair with his grading system. He curves his test and final a TON. He also replaces your lower midterm with the final grade if it's higher which is really nice. I would definitely recommend him but just be aware of his teaching style if you are the same kind of learner as I am.

A very enjoyable professor to listen and talk to. He makes a couple good jokes every week (and running gags that go the entire quarter) and sometimes goes off tangent from the lesson, but he gets back to the material at hand. When he was teaching, it was clear he knew what he was saying, and it showed when he wrote it on the board. I took Calc II as a refresher course after taking it in high school, so I generally knew most of the material. Some of the methods he used for certain problems (for instance, area and volume using integrals) was different to how I learned, so those parts were challenging to me (which may explain why I didn't quite get an A in the class). Sometimes he over explained the work he was doing on the board and it just confused the class, but this wasn't a common problem. His quizzes and homework aren't too bad. Some challenging problems, but nothing you can't handle if you talk to him during office hours or have a group to work with. If you do go to his office hours, make sure you have a lot of free time. There is always a line of students outside of his room. Do the suggested problems (the non-required work), and you'll ace the weekly quizzes since he takes problems from there. Midterm and final are curved, so there is a little room for you to make errors.

Do not take this class if you've never took calculus before, or if you are not interested in nailing down the essence of it. As a non math and non engineer major (science major), this was was tedious, and his midterms are extremely difficult. He basically formats his tests in his own way, different from the homework and quizzes (because quizzes are just random homework assignments). He has a lot of midterms/finals online on his website, check those out, and you'll understand what I mean. To do well you really have to understand and know what you are doing and why--- why a problem works out that way, and JUSTIFY. I strongly disliked this class. He was funny at times, but not very helpful to non engineers.

An entertaining professor for sure, explains the material as well as any calc professor i've had at Poly. Interupts himself with silly anecdotal stories at least twice a class which is good if your brain needs a break. His tests are fair, and are usually easier than expected, although that isn't to say that they aren't hard. Is very good at giving partial credit. I liked Professor Richert, Although I thought it was a hard class. He is a good teacher who definitely knows his math! I thought he made class more bearable with his puns and dry humor, the downside to his class is that he writes A LOT on the board and I found it hard to write everything thing down and make sure I was following the examples. I found that his test were pretty hard. I studied quite a bit for all of them and mostly did poorly on them. Be warned, you have to write down and explain your steps on the test. You will not receive full credit unless you do that for every problem. I'm taking him again cause I learned a lot in his class and I like him as a professor. But he is definitely not an easy A or B. Excellent teacher. He keeps the class interested by providing witty discussion alongside the usual calculus drivel. His tests are all curved and are pretty easy as long as you consistently do the homework. For my class he had us do online webassign homework as well as written homework. I like the way he does his homework, you have to actually write about each problem instead of just number-crunching. It's too bad that an A is the highest grade you can give a professor because Professor Richert deserves way higher than just an A. A lot of the comments on him seem to be way outdated to me. A lot say that he comes off as arrogant, and he definitely did during the first week or so, but after a while I realized that it was mostly a part of his sense of humor. He is hilarious! I seriously looked forward to going to his class each morning because of how funny he is. He is as fair as a professor as you can possibly be. Calculus is supposed to be hard, so his class isn't easy, but he doesn't make it harder than it needs to be. He also understands that calculus isn't the most important thing in the world; he even repeatedly reminded us that "it's just calculus" in order to encourage us not to get too stressed when things got difficult. He clearly cares about the wellbeing and success of every student, and he even invited anyone who wasn't able to go home for Thanksgiving to come and have Thanksgiving with his family so that they wouldn't have to be alone. He doesn't care about students' ability to crank out answers to calculus problems; he cares only about our ability to think critically and be problem solvers so that for those of us going into engineering and other majors built on mathematics, we'll have the ability to solve the actual real problems that we need to solve, not just have the ability to procedurally find the Taylor Series of some function like a robot. So if you're looking to actually learn and grow as a problem solver and to actually be challenged, take his class.

Written homework was graded hard, so be careful with that. Actual quizzes were usually one of the last problems of the homework assignments, aka the hardest ones, so either straight up memorize or straight up understand. He tended to go pretty fast, so if you're not willing to teach yourself a little bit when you get behind, you may not like him. Finals and midterms were fair but hard, always with one or two questions that murder. Take an easier professor if you don't have the time to really teach yourself most of the material, especially if you're not a very good audio learner. Good luck!

Richert is a solid teacher. He is passionate about Calculus and absolutely knows what he is talking about; Always do his optional homework as his quizzes are based directly off them. However, his written assigments are quite tedious but help teach you conceptual concepts on a very good basis. He has a great personality and his midterms are fair yet a bot challenging. great teacher is you ask me

In my opinion, a great professor. He presents the material in a clear and efficient way, and also keeps the lecture from being as dry as the Sahara Desert. He does lecture quickly, but that is just the nature of the class anyways. He is very helpful in office hours if you ask specific questions rather than asking him to summarize an entire topic. A downside is that his office hours are generally short and really busy, but if you talk to him he meets by appointment and is very helpful. Quizzes every Friday that consisted of "suggested" (but any smart person will do them) homework problems from the week. Midterms were very straightforward and had similar problems in difficulty of the homework. If you don't know what a problem is asking, try to at least write something about what you know or what you think about the problem because he will give you partial credit. Midterms are generally curved which really helps. In all honesty, what he cares about is the student's ability to communicate their work. He has something called "written homework" where you have to write out step by step what you are doing and why and it is tedious and sometimes annoying but in the long run it has saved my ass in future math classes and even other supports. A great professor.

He is definitely not a bad professor. He is caring and very nice, funny guy. But, his lectures are REALLY fast paced. You will not be able to copy everything he writes and still follow up with him. He definitely expects certain math expertise from you BEFORE coming into the class. I am mathy person if you ask me, but his class was pretty challenging (maybe it had to do with 9 AMs and I couldn't get to class. I'm not a morning person) His class average during my quarter was 71% for 9 AM class, and at EXACT same class on 10 AM, the class average was 79%. So, if you are awake and following up with him intensely, he can be a lot of fun. He invited students over during the Thanksgiving break if the students don't have a plan, and that was probably the sweetest thing I've heard from a professor. TLDR, face paced, nice guy. Go to class and pay attention then you'll be fine with some office hours.

I really enjoyed taking Calc 3 with Professor Richert. I was a little concerned at the beginning of the quarter, but I quickly realized how much Richert cares about his class and the subject matter. He recognizes the difficulty of the course and also that many of his students are just engineers trying to get through a support class. His lectures are very much packed, so you must be focused the whole hour to take notes and understand what he's saying. But his tests are fair and the class format is pretty straightforward with weekly quizzes and a couple problems that must be thoroughly explained.

While this class was easy, he did not convey the material well at all. He spent most of the time repeating the same story over and over. He makes the material much more complicated then it needs to be. Your best bet is to do the assigned homework with another source and just show up to exams. Take another professor if you do not like learning on your own.

Professor Richert is a really understanding professor. He really recognizes students difficulties and realizes that Calc 3 is hard! He curved DRASTICALLY both midterms, and probably even the final. That saying, the midterms were really difficult and almost no one would finish either tests. Calc 3 itself is a really hard subject, but Richert makes it generally enjoyable. He has a very enthusiastic tone in his voice, which makes it easy to listen to him and understand him. The only thing is, he uses weird abbreviations a lot which makes a lot of his notation difficult to understand, and he goes extremely fast. Just do the homework, and go into office hours and you'll at least get a B!

Richert was amazing. His ability to present the course material in a way that students could grasp and visualize is something I have never come across in any other math class. An added bonus is that if there was anything unclear, he can clear it right up in ten minutes max during office hours. Richert was also able to keep his class very light-hearted and fun with many running jokes and gags whilst maintaining a level of professionalism and seriousness in the class. In between his description of solving series or creating planes, he would mention how you could expand upon this knowledge by signing up for his math minor. He advertised this minor very heavily and although at first it seems intimidating, it becomes quite funny when it comes up multiple times a week. To pass this class, you really have to do the homework. One of the most important parts is cementing the base he creates in class by doing a few problems a night to supplement the lecture. My grade personally dropped when I started slacking on the homework, and I believe that if I had maintained my homework schedule I would have gotten an A. His tests are not easy but he does curve them pretty well. He also responds to emails and any sort of feedback as soon as possible and works with students, helping them any way he can. Overall, great professor and I hope I can have another one of his classes in the future.

Where to begin... Many students really like Richert, but I struggled in this class and he failed to help me. He is accustomed to teaching engineers or math majors. I took Calculus for the Life Sciences and he did not cater to our special needs. If you've never taken calculus before, like I hadn't, then beware. My friends who did well in calculus in high school were also confused and had to rely on their high school notes. Some individuals did well in the class, but everyone who was new to calculus struggled. He makes you explain the problems in English and does not give out very much partial credit. Also, show up early to his office hours, otherwise you may waste an hour. He teaches many upper-division courses, and he favors these students with his time. Not a bad person, but not the right professor if you're new to calculus and want the support of your professor.

I enjoyed having Dr. Richert. He generally explains the material pretty clearly. He does move pretty quickly during his lectures, however, but he often makes an effort to slow down if students are having trouble keeping up. He is very helpful during office hours as well.

Richert is a nice guy. He tried to be social with the students and i guess that made me feel confortable. During class he keeps the class awake with his jokes(which aren't that funny!), random stories that goes on a different tangent from what the topic is really about. He writes too many words on the board but he does not explains it efficiently. Sometimes we were better off reading the ex. from the book. And he did not graded hw so that was not a load. Most of the people did not do well in midterms so he had a fat curve, which was good. He had quizes on Th or Fri but and 2 midterms which were hard. One thing i did not like was that he was not very good at explaining or answering questions during office hours, he was always giving me complex responses. HE was a nice guy but needs to work on understanding student's difficulties. I will avoid this proffessor, if i had a choice.

Prof. Richert was funny as anything. he walks in EVERY day and slams his book down on the table, and then says "Ah, monday!" or whatever day it is. very random. hes got all these crazy stories bout random stuff, some are pretty funny. like the crops unit; apparently there are cannibles (thats how he spells it) out there. hes good at explaining the stuff. the only reason i got a B+ and not an A was because i was taking Linear analysis the same quarter and was a little busy with that. dont do that.

Richert is an all-around good guy. He seems genuinely interested in his students and the material he teaches. Unfortunately, he can write as fast as he talks. I had a tough time following examples in class because he could turn out lines and lines of expressions and formulas and be halfway through the problem by the time I was done drawing the three-space diagram and the original function. He attempts to be humorous, a lot of his problems involve encounters with cannibals on the Cal Poly crops fields. While I can see the humor in the problems, he was so repetitive in the situations that the humor got old the third week into the class. He also enjoys assigning huge loads of homework nightly (two hours per assignment) which he collects every Tuesday and Friday of the week. Weekend assignments seemed especially bulky. His tests were significantly easier than the homework problems and were straightforward, however he

Take him, because Kato isn't as great as people would say.

So let me start by saying that Methods of Proof is a hard class. I knew this going in but I want to get a math minor, and this is one of the required courses. Now as for Richert, he knows his stuff. He moves pretty quick, but that\'s because there\'s a ton of material to cover. He\'s very understanding of how difficult the class is, but the class takes a ton of work. There were points where I had to reread the book multiple times and redo problems. Richert was great, but Methods of Proof was the hardest class I\'ve taken at Poly so far.

Richert is and excellent professor. I\'ve had him for two quarters now (for Math 248 and Math 341), and he is one of my favorite professors at Cal Poly. He also has a hilarious sense of humor and constantly references 80\'s and 90\'s pop culture. As for Proofs itself, it really wasn\'t that bad. Basically all the proofs boil down to stating the definitions and then following them to their logical conclusions, so as long as you knew the definitions everything was pretty straight forward........and there was much rejoicing.

Richert is an excellent professor. He is always funny and will make you laugh everyday. He is a purist for Mathematics, which makes him very knowledgeable, but proofs therefore are put up to his bar. The grade consists of HW: 25%, 2 midterms at 25% each, and a final at 25%, and the final can replace one of your midterm's score. HW is due twice a week every Tues and Fri. For his jokes alone, he is worth taking, he is seriously super funny. His office hours may be packed if he's also teaching calculus. He adjusts the midterms and final to a bar where he thinks an A student is, which is very reasonable. Also he's the Math Minor Advisor, so if you're thinking about it, might as well get to know the guy! Overall, an excellent professor and I would take him again if I could.

This is my first and probably only time posting a review. Professor Richert is one of those instructors that completely change how you look at math, provided that you let him. He has a passion and enthusiasm for teaching that is simply unparalleled. The one caveat is that he is, at least for 248, very difficult. I have never put in half as much mental effort into a math class as I had to for this one. Simply put, he has very high expectations of you, but if you persevere and aren't afraid to ask for help (which he is always willing to provide), he will help you meet, and even exceed them.

The two most recent reviews that talk about math 248 nicely sum up how his class went. For me, this class ended up being harder and more time-consuming than I thought (although it might not be the same for you). I am very glad I took this class even after I was done with my math requirements, as it showed me I am not nearly as good as math as I thought. You will probably find proofs relatively easy provided that you have: 1. the intuition to be able to have a picture to "leap" several steps ahead and "see" how the problem is solved 2. the step by step reasoning to make sure there were not any errors in logic anywhere 3. the command of language to express your ideas If you lack *any* one of these skills, be prepared to set aside the time to make sure you have the fullest understanding possible of the material. You will do well on his tests if you put your best effort in the homework and GO TO OFFICE HOURS for clarification.

Like the other reviews of Math 248, this is a challenging course. Richert knows this is a difficult course because it is everyone's first proofs class and it is completely different than the math most people have taken up to this point. However, he tries his best to make the material easy to understand. The homework can be somewhat difficult but he is very helpful in office hours. Office hours are normally packed with other students but he will show you exactly what you need to do on the homework. The tests really aren't too bad but sometimes if you don't know the solution right off the bat you might not have enough time to sit there and figure it out. In the end, most people have some trouble on the test so they get curved considerably. There are two midterms and a final, each worth 25% of the grade. If you do better on the final than one of your midterms Richert doubles your final and gets rid of a midterm. Overall, I would recommend taking Proofs with Richert.

Richerts probably the best you can get to teach methods of proof. Sometimes he is a bit fast and not able to realize whether his students are struggling. It was also really hard taking a class with no textbook and very few resources to use to study for exams. That is why HW was so important and heavily graded. Homework is the reason I got a B in this course because the exams were so much easier in comparison and they were also curved. Homework was difficult because there were so many assignments with little time in between them, and sometimes he would assign very difficult problems. Getting help was a little bit of a pain since dozens of his other students would flood his office hours due to these difficult problems but one way or another you'd get an answer. As for grading that answer, you really do have to learn by failure since the grader is not afraid to give you a 4/12 on an assignment sometimes. So basically, try your best to do each HW assignment to the best of your ability and use all the resources you have out there to make sure your proofs are done correctly. The tests should be a breeze in comparison. Also, he is by far the best math lecturer i have had at cal poly by a mile

Richert is awesome. This is a hard class, so you need to stay on top of the homework and go to office hours and basically find as many resources as you can. He didn't provide us with a book, but a few of us found some books for free online that really helped. He also taught two sections of the class back to back, and several of us would sit in on both lectures. He talks and writes fast. The homework isn't that bad, and there isn't a lot. The tests are hard. He is a really awesome professor though, I would definitely take him again.

I enjoyed the class and his lectures. He's funny (for a math professor) and a nice guy. Usually easy to follow although he gets numbers wrong in his examples so be sure to watch him. The grade is based on 60% homework and 40% final. There were no other quizes, tests, or midterms. I thought the book (Game Theory and Strategy by Philip D. Straffin) was a little too conversational, not doing enough straight up definitions, but I felt Prof. Richert made up for that in lecture.

This was an decent class with some interesting topics. He is a smart professor who knows a lot about math and goes off on tangents very much in an attempt to try and keep class interesting. As far as teaching goes, his style of teaching might not be right for everybody as more often times than not, he tends to outsmart himself in lectures and will always find excuses for losing his thoughts like "Oh, it must be Monday" etc. He really likes to socialize, so he has good personality. Nevertheless, he knows the stuff and is willing to keep students interested in learning with his jokes. He is bad with spelling makes mistakes in his lectures. He would be great for lower-division classes, but needs some work to be a better professor for an upper-division class.

I hope that Professor Richert reads this: he was INEFFECTIVE at conveying the material in abstract algebra. Granted, he IS a smart guy, but he just goes all over the place when presenting proofs and examples - and then BOTH you and he get lost! Furthermore, stop with the "Oh today is Monday..", "Oh it must be Tuesday", "oh it's Wednesday", etc! On the flip side, he is a nice fellow, but BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOURSELF THE MATERIAL - as many of us in the class will tell you! Excellent book (you have to read it to actually know what's going on), and good luck to people taking him in the major math courses!
