Joel is one of the best teachers i have had on campus so far. He provides you with information that he transfers directly to quizzes. The quizzes are all straight forward. If you put in the effort to study the notes from class, the quizzes are easy. He does not try to trick you with how he words the quiz questions either, like some of the other professors will do. He is a fair grader and roots for his students to get A's rather than F's. You never feel the need to skip class because he makes it fun by joking with the students. I would strongly urge all students to at least take one of his classes because you wont be sorry you did!

I just finished reading the last evaluation of Joel Judge and obviously that person has a grudge. First of all he doesn't even teach ASCI 143. He does have his favorites and that would be the people that work hard and participate in class. You also need to be able to take a joke as he tries to make class fun. He also like students with problems to go see him in his office, he was always very fair and more than helpful. As for judging some shows I would rather take a class from someone who is still respected and connected in the swine and beef industry. I think that he tries harder to help students than most professors at Cal Poly. He is doing an awesome job.

This professor had his favorites and I was not one of them. I believe he judged on a persons appearance rather than a students skill to learn and share a personal point of view. If he did not like you, he did'nt care. He believes that being a show steer judge can be very important over teaching a class. It is a shame for a student who can barely make grades and being a point shy of AP, to teach a class while he is off trying to judge a steer show. I am a graduate student and I believe the system has sunk low when professors decide slacking and taking advantage of students education because it will lead a student to fail or believe a D average is accepted for standards. In conclusion be protective when taking Mr. Joel judge.

If you're not a chick or a show jock, you don't mean shit to him. He thinks he's a badass and can't stop bragging about where he's been and what he knows. He does know his stuff but lets his opinions dominate. I don't care that you think you're Mr. Angus and don't tell me why your breed is so superior to others... Its his opinion and not a fact like he'd like you to believe. If you like labs to be like the play time in kindergarten, you ought to take his class. I have heard that he is open to helping students in his office but I never went 'cause I didnt like him. If you dont already know anything about beef cattle, take him because he will teach you a lot. If you already know cattle, don't let him know because he'll feel threatened and try to prove to you and the class that he is awesome and you suck. I know I am in the MINORITY here and thats partially because every girl wants to sit in front of him and stare. Overall, take him and don't get as worked up about disliking him as I did. He is a good teacher, apparently he cares about his students and I many other people like him.

I enjoyed the beef class from Joel this quarter. He does know his info on beef cattle and I think he invites students to speak up and participate in class discussions. I also come from a cattle back ground and as the fore mentioned post describes, I didn't feel belittled or put down. I think that he tries to get to know the students and relate to them on a more personal level, rather than just a bunch of numbers. The last post is just a personl attack and not really relevent to his teaching abilities. In all it would have been nice to have him in class more, but some circumstances this quarter kept him from the class room. I would recommend this class to everyone.

I was reading the polyratings and first I want to say that the guy that posted the the evaluation before mine is a loser. Like big time I mean what kind of a worthless piece of shit gets on polyratings to talk about how they feel about work ethics. Hey buddy get a hobby and stop kissin ass cause nobody cares if they fall in your good graces. By the way Joel is a really good teacher.

A teacher who cares about his students, understands all aspects of the industry, and works to make ALL of his students better. 221 has a quiz just about every Friday in Lecture, two midterms, and occassional lab quizzes. Never learned more about cattle and life in one quarter in my life. The guy flat deserves a raise for getting students excited about animal science!!!!

Joel is amazing. We had two midterms, and a final (which was really just a third midterm) and you didn't have to take the final if you had a 95% or higher. This was my favorite class all quarter because Joel presents material with years of experience in the beef industry behind him, so you can be sure that he has experience with what he's teaching. Labs are great, just a few assignments. Also if you ever need help, he's always available at office hours or by text, and very willing to solve any problems that may exist. Overall, he's ruined other species classes for me since none of the others will measure up.

Joel is one of my favorite professors here at Cal Poly. He is not only a great teacher, but also a wonderful person. He is very passionate about beef cattle, and never fails to make the class interesting. He is also a great lab instructor. Lab usually never lasted more than an hour and a half. Joel is very approachable and he has a great sense of humor. The midterms are easy if you study. Make sure to understand both the terms and the concepts behind them. I would highly recommend Joel for this class. This species class is well worth your time. He made it very enjoyable and I really feel like I came out with a much better understanding of the beef cattle industry.

Joel can relate to students easily and makes it easy to approach him with difficulties and advice. I also had him for a time in animal breeding when he guest lectured. He has a great general understanding of the livestock business. I think that he also wants students to really do well in class. You will need to study in the 222 class.

Joel is such a great teacher! Swine has been my favorite species class because of his teaching style both in lecture and in lab. He really presented the material well, teaching us some basics first and focusing on more than just the production side of the species. Joel is an interesting speaker who makes class fun. In lab we did a lot of hands-on work and really learned. The tests were a combination of muliple choice, fill-in, short essay and true-false. They took a lot of studying but they were not too hard if you went to class and took notes. He was great about posting his power points for us and was available if anyone needed help. I would definately recomend taking a class from Joel Judge.

This class is great!! It will teach you about every animal speicies and how to evaluate them. I started the class with no Judging expierence and learned sooo much. I even got over my fear of speaking in front of otehrs, even though you only give oral reasons to Joel or his assistant teachers. If you are an Animal Science student this is a class you must take!!!

Joel does have his favorate students. His favorate students are the ones that work hard, show that they care, and are reliable and competent. If you don't want to work or don't care then don't take a class from him and don't do any enterprise projects that he advises; because like me he won't give a shit about you. If you want to learn then spend some time around Joel you can learn alot about beef cattle and some about life.
