Eileen isn't a mean lady, she's just not that good at conveying the course material. I retook the class and my new teacher did an excellent job. Eileen was never to thrilled when students asked questions, she'd get upset and wouldn't give a good answer. I had her for her first quarter teaching at the college level, she had previously been teaching at a corporate level and made a terrible adjustment to college. I'd recommend against taking her, but it doesn't mean you won't be able to pass.

Dr. Rossman was a great professor. I thought her lectures were very clear, and she is very helpful in office hours. Sometimes there were homework problems that I felt I hadn't been prepared for, but not often. The homework can be hard, but doesn't consume more time than necessary, and is helpful for learning the material. Her midterms are fair. ME 211 is a hard course, and if you pay attention to lectures and do your homework, you should have no problem passing the class with Dr. Rossman.

Eileen gave me an F because she couldn't convey the material. Several times during class we would have to interrupt her and share that she was solving the problem incorrectly. Then she would jack some test from some faraway textbook that she probably couldn't do herself (without our help), and everyone would get rocked on it. Avoid this teacher...spare yourselves the misery of watching her teach.

Rossman was an okay lady, but I didn't really like her teaching style. She didn't seem to teach what we needed to know, and would skip over things we were already supposed to know, when in fact we didn't. My biggest complaint is that she would very rarely finish example problems. She would go halfway through and then just assume we could finish it. She also seemed to get upset if we asked too many questions and would get very frustrated with us. When I had her, we had 2 midterms and they weren't too difficult. I wouldn't recommend her, but she's probably gotten better at teaching, since she'd only been teaching for one quarter when I had her.

She was a wonderful teacher. I went into the class dreading it because i had chosen a teacher with a good rating and he got swithed on me, but it turns out that i liked the class a lot. She had weekly quizes which were very doable as long as I did the homework (and understood it). Homework was collected each class, only about 3 or 4 problems. She grades very fairly, and gives a lot of partial credit as long as she can see that you were on the right track. Take her, she's really nice and it's clear that she knows what she's teaching.

Rossman + 8am mwF, yes friday + 8 quizzes of ONLY ONE PROBLEM EACH worth 64% of your FINAL GRADE = trouble. Shes nice yet boring. The quizzes wernt too bad i averaged about a C on them, but then the final ripped me a new one. I left it without making one mark on one problem. It is a common final so each teacher writes one problem and rossman doesnt even grade it. I was supposed to have maddrenn and then on the second day he got switched out for this piece. 3.8 polyrating to 2.2. If you can do the homework every night, attend every class, and go to office hours you can get a B, but it is far too easy to fall behind.

Rossman is one of those love or hate professors. May god strike me down, I liked her class better that what I heard other poeple were going through (*cough cough* Lacascio). Be prepared to spend about 10 hours per week just doing hw and then you got a quiz every week. Overall, I'd give her a B....although there was the rediculous frames/machines problem on the final....

Compared to Kenendy, this professor is more patient and does exaamples that clearly demonstrate certain concepts. She is a fair grader, and takes the pressure off with a weekly quiz and no midterms. The quizzes are usually on material that you just turned in for homework, so it's imperative to do the HW, and NOT just copy it from the solutions manual. She also lets you use a 1-sided cheat sheet, but no worked out problems. Overall, I liked that her class was broken down into weekly quizzes because the material is easier to digest that way.

I don't know whether it was her teaching style or just the material but everything clicked in that class for me. We had homework due every class, but there was only 5 quizes taht made up all our test scores. Most of the notes were online, we only had to fill out what she wrote on the board. As long as you kept up with your homework and made sure you did them right then conceptually the class becomes fairly easy. I'm taking Rosman for Thermal and Fluids this next quarter because I liked her so much. I RECCOMEND ROSSMAN FOR ANY CLASS

As someone has already said, 100% of statics is banging your head against a wall until the answer floats into your brain. The problems are long, hard, and confusing, but then so is the rest of engineering. In my own experience, I found Dr. Rossman to be a pretty good statics teacher. Her method of having a quiz every week instead of a mid term is helpful since you\'re tested on less and the information is fresh in your brain. Sure, it\'s only one problem, but they take twenty minutes apiece so would you rather have two? She admitted that she made the quiz and homework problems more difficult than average so that we would be well prepared when the final came around. Now I may only speak for myself, but when I saw the final, I was so relieved to see how relatively \"easy\" the problems were compared to the ones she traditionally assigned us. IF you do the homework and do your best to understand every problem, you will do fine. And that is a big IF. For fall 2009 she made quizzes worth 65%, the final worth 35%, and she graded the class on a curve.

Rossman is pretty cool. Sometimes she had trouble understanding what a student was asking, but overall did a decent job presenting the material. She tries to keep the class involved and sometimes singles students out and asks them questions (some may not like that, but i think it helps you pay attention). She gives one quiz a week, normally at the end of class (15min) but there were a few take homes. If you\'re willing to do the work for this class (homework, homework, homework) Rossman isn\'t bad.

This person is probably the worst lecturer here at cal poly. She can not convey the subject matter to her students, does nothing to really teach the material except to redo example problems straight from the book. She never goes over any homework in class. She always needs to correct herself while she's doing example problems, leaving the students constantly confused, and for this she is very incompetent. In my class i don't think a single person liked her. I would avoid her like the plague.

If you interact with her, lectures aren't all that boring. Homework usually consists of an easy, medium, and hard problem but is always on what the lecture was on that day. She's generous on partial credit. As I understand she has some experience in the elevator business, not a tenured professor who's lived in a university office all their life. Take her if you are the type to sit in the front of class and _participate_ in lectures. Don't ask me about office hours; I never went.

Prof Rossman (Eileen, not her husband Allan) needs some improvement. Its her first year teaching (2002-2003), so I don't blame her for her inexperience. I do blame her for being unhelpful and using example problems she found at whoknowswhere.com! If you take this class, you'd better be ready to learn almost everything on your own from the book. She assigns 4 hw problems per class and gives two midterms.

Rossman has trouble getting the ideas of the class from her brain to her students'. She tries to make you understand, but she has a lot of trouble teaching you what she knows. Her tests are of average difficulty, and she assigns nightly homework. You have to keep up with the homework, and the tests are 25% of the final grade, each. Rossman does her best, but it isn't awesome, so if you have trouble learning some things yourself, from the book or elsewhere, you might be in trouble.

Eileen is a great teacher. She's very approachable and helpful during office hours. She assigns four problems twice a week. These aren't impossible problems, but ones you can usually do yourself. Be sure to do and understand all the homework problems, and go to office hours. Her tests were very fair, but I've heard she's changed to weekly quizzes.

We had 5 quizes worth 50% of our grade, homework was 10% and the final was 40%. She does a good job presenting the material most of the time and tries to do a few examples each day. Time permitting, she usually answers homework questions in the beginning of class. The only complaint I had was her office hours were at bad times and she wasn't very willing to make appointments for other times. She doesn't curve until the end, but apparently she has a nice curve becuase I had a B going into the final and according to points it was impossible for me to get an A, but I ended up with an A.

Quick breakdown of points. 6 quizes for 58% of your grade, homework is 2% and the final is 40. Quizes are pretty straight forward if you do all the homework and inclass examples. She teaches you pretty well how to solve basic problems, but that is about it. When you take the final, you realize you know about half of what you should. She was nice in office hour and in class, and seemed like she really cared about us doing good, but she just wasn't that great of a teacher.

Well you can fucking forget about raising your grade by going to her office hours or even getting decent help there either. She seems very unwilling to give help in office hours, even though I came with two full pages of work and scribbles and shit that took me an hour to figure out for ONE problem, and i show that to her in office hours and she takes a look at it, looks back at her computer, and continues clicking away with the remark like "so?" What do you mean "so" dammit, i'm here for a fucking reason, i don't live on campus i came here just to see you in office hours so that you could hopefully WALK me through the problem as that would be IDEAL for me to learn. Pretty much all she did was tell me that she can't understand what i was writing, told me something that i was missing as if i should have known it was there, and then sat there staring motionless so i took it that the help wasn't gonna get much better after that and i left. Unfortunately for a class like dynamics you'd really hope that your professor would at least be very encouraging and understanding and helpful in office hours. The one thing i do want to say about her is that she IS a little above average in conveying the material clearly to students, and for that i really do appreciate it. I would recommend her if you like the material she is teaching and are motivated to play with it to teach yourself here and there. Good luck

When I first took Rossman people said OMG why did you take her. But after taking her class i think that i will tak her again for any other ME classes that she teaches. Her quizzes were a bit tough and each one was worth 11% of the total grade and at 5 quizzes one could seriously ruin their chances at a passing grade. But if you studied the material and stayed on top of the class then its not hard at all. I also feel that i was more than prepared for the dreaded common final.

Rossman is very straight forward and clear. Her lectures are detailed and presented in an organized fashion, but they are very boring. She has a very dry personality, but her quizzes and tests are exactly how she taught the material. She is not the most approachable teacher, but go to her office hours and she will help. Her dynamics course consisted of 5 quizzes and 1 final. If you are looking for a clear professor that will not throw any curveballs, I highly recommend her. ROSSMAN IS A COMPLETE BITCH!!! She needs to take some courses over in the Psychology Dept. on how to treat people. For gosh sakes, get an attitude adjustment and show some respect! Dynamics is a tough class, and any time you ask a question in class she makes you wish you never even raised your hand. Don't plan on asking things through email either because she doesn't even have the courtesy to respond to student emails, especially when grades roll around! Rossman was a good lecturer in that she clearly conveyed the material. The course consisted of weekly online quizzes or group quizzes in class that were 10% of our grade, 5 scheduled quizzes (lowest dropped) at 45%, homework (6 problems a week) at 10%, and the common final at 35%. Her in class quizzes were never very complex and often much easier than the homework. I felt that she very adequately prepared us for the common final. She is strict about neatness on quizzes, so follow her instructions on how to format your work. Overall, Rossman did not overcomplicate this class. While she may be a little unapproachable, I would recommend her for dynamics.

Okay so if you don’t ever interact with her in person or look her in the eye or breath in the same room you shouldn’t have a problem. I just can’t believe how hateful she would be. She is pretty good, in my opinion, conveying the material, but only if she doesn't have to interact with you. The material she presents is nicely organized and really all you need to know is on her handouts. If you ask questions, most likely she'll just make you feel like a dimwit. This goes for in class as well as in office hours. She also spends 0 time on grading your exams, so she'll literally mark points off just because she feels like it. I went into her office once to debate the grade of my exam and she tried to rationalize why it was wrong when it was correct just so she didn't have to be wrong and change it. She gave a detailed response of what she wanted in the problem, and I literally said, yes I did that it's right here, and she like ohh... like she didn't see how blatant it was, because she obviously wasn't even looking... so ridiculous. She might have some ego issues or something, like everyone is beneath her. With my experience, she's a yucky person to have to interact with. I sometimes day dream of someone putting potatoes in her exhaust.

I actually enjoyed the class. She was straight forward and down to earth. Problems on the midterms(2) and final are similar to homework problems, and she only assigns homework problems that are relevant. She usually assigns 12 problems (or less) a week. I had the class MTWF, and homework was due M W and F. Tough grader on homework, which is good in a way because she gets you to use proper notation and things like that. Tuesday's we worked on matlab stuff in the ME computer room. Matlab really sucks, but it's not her fault and there's no way to get around it.

Listen up. I had Rossman her second or third quarter teaching, about two years ago. She was bad at the time. This time around, I could really tell that she has transformed into an awesome teacher. She's comfortable with the class and does a great job of keeping it simple. For dynamics 2, she gives a review quiz 10%, homework 2%, two midterms each 20%, lab assignments 20%, and the final 28%. Keep up with the material by going to office hours when you don't get it and use the solutions disc to help with hw.

I have taken 3 of Rossman's classes. I was in her original Statics class, the first quarter she taught at Cal Poly (since then she has improved considerably). I feel that many people give her low marks simply because the class is somewhat difficult, and that isn't fair. I took statics, dynamics, and intermediate dynamics with her. The weekly quiz is easy if you did the homework (which you simply cannot avoid if you hope to pass), and the midterms are not bad either (though always time-limited and hard to finish). The common final for all three classes was typically rough because different teachers contributed to it, but that's another story for another day. In short, Prof. Rossman is a good teacher and is very friendly. Any misunderstandings or confusion related to the material is easily cleared up in the 5 minutes after class, or with a 10 minute visit to her office hours.

I think Rossman is overall a good teacher. Alot of people accused her of being a little tough on the students that approach problems in a different way than her own, but I think that is fair. It's important to be able to do problems a number of ways and to adapt properly to how the teacher wants it. Her lectures were quite boring, just mostly sample problems, but I definitely learned the material. The homework load is insane, but I think that comes with the difficulty of the material. Just watch out on the lab portion, she grades the simulations really tough.

Rossman is my least favorite ME professor on campus. Someone should investigate copyright infringement because her lectures are strait out of the textbook. This is good if you don't want to show up to class becuase you'll never benefit by attending her lecture. Test problems are cut strait out of the book as well. You can take Rossman, not learn a thing, and still get an A. Note: Don't expect getting any help from Rossman, asking her questions about anything will only confuse her.

She is absolutely horrible at matlab. I love how all the smart professors harp on the fact that to be a successful engineer you need to be able to adapt and learn new techniques and keep yourself a resource in industry. I guess if you fail at that you can always become a lower division poly professor, evident by Rossman. In lab, she was adamant that her matlab simulation was right, but after showing her my simulation and asking for help to 'correct' it to her output, she stared at it, said nothing was wrong except I was getting wrong output values, told me to fix it and walked away. It turned out her simulation was wrong, which she admitted a week later. Alot of fucking good that did me. Her lecture is alright, but shes one of those professors that if you ask her a moderately hard question it completely stumps her and she gets kinda pissy. Wouldn't take her unless I had to.

I don't think Rossman gets the credit she deserves. People bag on her because this is a hard class. But I found her to be an excellent professor. She knows her stuff and knows how to convey it. She's blunt and straight to the point, but that's not a bad thing if you want to really learn the material. And she's also pretty funny and nice if you get past her frank personality. Her tests are a time crunch, but I thought they were both challenging but fair. The final was also very fair and not as much of a time crunch. Speaking of fair, her overall grading system is more generous than most professors. For starters, she'll weigh your higher midterm twice as much as the first. My grade in the class would not be possible without this considering I got a D on her first midterm, so that should give you hope. Do be aware that the material gets harder throughout the course. Also, she curves the class as a whole, so you honestly have to not try to fail this class. They also made the MATLAB portion of the class easier than in the past so that also will be a relief to some. Rossman definitely makes me feel like I now really KNOW dynamics, even more than when I took regular dynamics. She is great (and definitely underrated) and I would highly recommend her. However, she's the only professor teaching this class so you don't really have a choice :P

Coming from an average student's perspective, Intermediate Dynamics was a difficult class. Rossman was neither great nor terrible at conveying the material. She is, however, very helpful and nice in office hours. If you are having trouble with even small concepts, make sure to go in and talk to her. There were two tests (one weighted 10% and the other 20% based on how well you did). They are tight for time, but if you study well you will do OK. Last Note: the book in the CP bookstore is not the one to use, get Engineering Mechanics Dynamics by Pytel. It's the one that the class and notes follow.

She'll guide you to the general equations for a problem but you have to do the thinking. I messed up badly and failed both midterms terribly lol i got a 33 and a 47 respectively. But I got it together and did well on the final and got by with a D. Which sucks because I feel I know the material well. Oh well, anyways she's a great professor, the material is exponentially hard paired with the lab and people tend to give her bad reviews. I went into fluids thinking, "Oh shit, fluids!" , boy was I wrong. Rossman changed her usual weekly quiz structure to two midterms, a final, and homework. One of the midterms was on dead week. Fluids ended up being one of the easiest classes I have taken. Mostly becuase Rossman only tested us on the easy concepts and never anything we didn't do for homework. Our tests always had pipe flow problems, the final just tested us on stuff we already had on the midterms. This class ended up being a joke. Also, she provides the notes online to print up and bring to class. If you do this, you can spend the time in lecture learning the material rather than copying it from the board. The quizzes were fail, and the final was similar to those. Homework was due every week, and there were problems that were collected and ones that weren't. I would suggest doing both sets, because they are fair game for quizzes and the final.

hahahaha so true with the comment below (a few down). I also would rather light my balls on fire than sit through one of her lectures again hahaha. Seriously though, I think this woman is high when she goes to class, just so slow. One word that explains her lectures: BORRRRIIIINNNNNGGGGG

I'd give Rossman 20 bucks if she could complete an example problem and show all the units. seriously though if you kiss up you will do well. I unfortunately refused to do so.

I liked how Rossman has written her lectures in the printable notes because they're very easy to follow and quickly help you to understand the material. However, her tests are extremely difficult, so if you are not a good test-taker, be prepared for trouble. As a communicator, she explains things clearly and answers questions okay. Be sure to do all the homework problems she assigns, even the ones you don't have to turn in because they will be given in another form on the tests. I would recommend taking this class with maybe only one other hard one. That is all.

It is rare to have a professor that not only has a great understanding of the material but is also able to convey it well Rossman knows her stuff and if you just follow along and have a pulse in her class you will do well Fluid Mechanics is a tough subject, Cal Poly is a tough school, either man up or go to cuesta if you can\'t handle it

I simply felt that she was generally cold hearted. You can't ask a question in class for two reasons: she'll make you fell stupid, or she doesn't know the answer. Talking to her, she is always pretty bitter, as if the only reason she teaches is to make a buck. She lectures in a monotone voice that either puts you to sleep or bores you to death.

Some of the reviews below seem suspect, I'm sure Rossman, herself, wrote some of those to keep her GPA up. I got a B in the class, but I would not recommend taking her. Sure, I learned a lot, but I had a problem with Rossman's "teaching style." She tries to trick her students by wording test questions much differently than what she teaches in class. For example, every problem we did in class and HW asked for a stagnation pressure, but when that showed up on the test, it was a "range" of stagnation pressures based on the same formula. Turns out, it was only one stagnation pressure. This isn't an English class Rossman, save the synonyms you never mention in class for someone else. Anyway, there was 1 quiz (5% of grade), 2 midterms (30% of grade) and a final(25% of grade), with HW (10% of grade). The lab grade (30% of grade)helps a lot, but overall, I'd stay away from her. Personally, I like the subject, but she took the excitement out of everything.

Ok so Rossman gets a bad wrap for 236 lab according to these reviews. I got the same impression from her as a lot of you. But think about if you were teaching that class. I would be a dick because that material is dry and cold and completely sucks. I don't blame her. She is our senior project adviser and initially I was a little worried after having her for 236, but she is awesome. She even made us cookies one day. She is super nice and is a huge help. You guys should quite making personal judgments on someone based on how they teach a class.

So this review won't be relevant for another nine months, but listen up! If y'all are thinking about taking Senior Project in Winter and you have two choices and one of them is rossman, wait a quarter to take senior project. Regardless of what lab you choose, you will get reassigned, and there's a 50% chance you're with this crusty old twat. I had her for intermediate and she was actually not bad. But for Senior Project she's hell. Since she is a terrible engineer, she doesn't grade on content, but rather formatting and grammar. It's advanced tech writing with her, not engineering.

Rossman is so full of herself it's ridiculous. She gave my team feedback for a report, then when I asked her why she gave us certain confusing feedback, she denied ever giving it (even though it was clearly on the feedback page). Not helpful, merciless, avoid for senior project. She made 3 quarters of senior project hell.
